So suddenly NOT watching Avatar has made me the social outcast.

It seems I just cannot win. People ask me questions about Star Wars, Star Trek, Transformers, Stargate, computers; then they label me the nerd. I didn't go around talking to them about it. They asked me about the specifications of the PS3 vs the 360. I didn't just bring it up at random. I didn't go around telling people that HDMI is better than component, they asked me.

So they asked me about Avatar and I tell them that I haven't seen it. Now they are calling me weird because I haven't seen it. They said that the story is good, so I tell them that the story has already been done before, and that the only reason they think the movie is good is because of the computer graphics, where I estimate 10 minutes of what happens on screen was actually filmed, and the rest was rendered using a computer.

So now I am shunned because A. I haven't seen Avatar and B. I am not facinated by pretty things that can be made on the computer for a sci-fi movie.

What is going on? can I just not win?

Exactly. If these kinds of hypocrites are the ones making fun of you for not seeing a movie, then why would you worry about what they have to say?

Sounds like the people you hang out with are kind of dumb. Ditch 'em, you'll be happier in the long run.

Okay well...fair enough, don't assume anything about somthing you haven't seen personally (I too have not seen it, simply because I am not rich enough to make frequent jaunts to the cinema whenever somthing is released AND keep a gaming hobby) And well... don't let people like that bother you then?
Don't attack them and treat them as inferiors for liking it... I mean that seems a bit damaging to your arguement there. They're only asking you about it because they see you as some patron deity of all that is sci-fi in your community of associates. So... I dunno... gripe less?
Just smile and shrug, say you haven't seen it and don't have any longing interest in doing so, pat them on the head, and walk on down the life road has provided you with.

No probably not.

But the movie is worth a watch, if you go see it in 3-D IMAX because of the new style of 3-D that doesnt do the whole "BOO jump out of the screen at you" thing. Visuals were indeed ground breaking, but yes the story has been done in everything from Dances With Wolves, to The Last Samurai, and I'd say even Fast and the Furious (parts of it).

But it actually is worth the 10 dollars to see it in super big 3-d mode. Its not going to be as good once it comes out on DVD/Blu-ray because our current TVs actually cannont display the Simulcam 3-D. So give it a chance, and see it once, I really expect that as a Sci-fi fan, you will like it.

me or them? I was never trying to impress them. They come to me with this stuff, and I just respond, and it seems no matter what my response, I lose. I just don't get it.

Avatar = Cool thing in real life

However

Avatar = Dreadful thing on Escapist forums

So now you're pandering for our attentions, saying how bad the film is when you admit not going to see it?

Grow a pair.
I never said the movie was bad, It just doesn't hold my interest. people treat it like it is the greatest movie ever created, and that I'm somehow strange for not seeing this one movie.

it was rendered on a computer. Sure, people had to perform the actions, but the computers had to do a lot of the work to show what was seen.

either you are speaking from experience, or you are just an increadibly mature individual...

Hell I haven't watched it... I don't want to watch it... I know more people that don't want to watch it then I know that have watched it.

Pretty graphics do not a good movie make. There are some of us around that still want some kinda good, refreshing story to enjoy and from what I've been told and seen just about everywhere, this movie lacks that.

They captured the motion from the actors and CGI'd the hell all over it. If computers didn't make the movie, we'd see people jumping around on padded mats and bungie cords all over the place. Motion Capture isn't exactly new either... its been around for a while, there's just *gasp* modern technology to use with it now.

What I'm not looking forward to now is the flood of movies that are going to be exactly like this one, all the merchandise, the BK Avatar Kid's Meal and all that blah blah blah that comes along from a movie making a stupid amount of money.

Cameron isn't a bad director but... can we have a story that isn't 'ripped from the pages of history' (I'm looking at you Titanic AND you Avatar) next time?

because you are a loser.
to make a blanket statement such as 'It is made on computer' just screams of your ignorance on the subject. your nonsensical standpoint on the subject is much like questoning weither the moon exists or stating that the world is flat. you shouldn't wonder why you garner scorne from people.

I suggest you learn to not give a shit about people's opinions regarding the stuff you like, or inconsequential crap in general.

Or you will have a very difficult life.

I think the business of Avatar is that it's just so damn popular that even old ladies were watching it. Yes, old people of the last couple generations, going out to see the latest sci-fi movie. (I was in front of a couple of them watching Sherlock Holmes before seeing Avatar and afterwards, they told me how much they loved Avatar. THAT is how powerful the movie is.) My thoughts on this? It's justified in its popularity.

The movie is just more fx vomit. I don't give a rat's ass what earth shattering techniques were involved. After hearing the synopsis of the preachy and tired old story, I can't even be bothered to download it for free.
