I've bitched about my state so much that it's becoming unhealthy, but this time, it seems I'm defending it. And yes, this forum made me post this.

Yes, we have conservatives in office. Yes, we are a mainly Christian state. No, we are not all absolutely backwards-ass, discrimination-breeding, homophobic, racist, culturally-blind, pants-on-head retards.

I feel like we get a bad reputation due to every single portrayal of us either being:

1. A cowboy with a ten-gallon hat and a F-150.

or

2. An obese bigot with a Bud light in one hand and copy of UFC magazine in the other.

Let me tell you now that I've never met anyone in Texas even close to those representations in my life. The closest I've gotten to one of those stereotypes is the month I tried wearing cowboy boots (that got a bit uncomfortable).

Maybe it's just my area (Bryan/College Station), but my school of full of different cultures and walks of life. I'm talking Muslims, Indians, Koreans, you name it. Not to mention our openness to LGBT members. It just seems like it only takes a few retards in the public view ruining our image to make people point at us and get to feel better because they don't have to deal with this where they live. I'll admit, their is still a few of us acting like idiots and waving Bibles in front of everyone's face hoping that that'll solve their problems, but that's the dumb minority out of us. Yes, it really is a classic case of the vocal minority ruining everything.

So can we please, please stop acting like Texas is full of idiots with little to no exception? Please?

A Hermit's Cave
My whole extended family's GD-Chinese, and that includes the Texan branch...

My cousin's doing pretty well for herself there, steady job, nice pay-packet and lots of neighbourhood love for her pets. Can't be all bad... -_-

People generalise. I know it's not always pleasant, but it's kind of what we do. I'm not sure I'd be happier living in a world where people had to make a qualifying statement for every controversial comment they made, along the lines of "Of course, I know not everyone who lives there/believes this/is a fan of this is like that". It would get old.

If it makes you feel any better, I'd generalise Mississippi long before I'd generalise Texas.

Bronies on this site have been saying exactly this until they're blue-in-the-face.

Doesn't seem to have had any effect though =/

[sub][sub]And I do apologize for creating that thread.[/sub][/sub]
DAMMIT TOPAZ YOU SAID THE B-WORD. If this gets in any way derailed by the fanbase-who-shall-not-be-named I blame you.

Must... resist... posting.... pony... picture...

Anyway, I agree. Texas gets way too much crap. And....

Ah, screw it. My opinion probably doesn't count all that much considering I am a
conservative. Of course I'm gonna say Texas gets too much criticism for being a
conservative state.

Now, if you excuse me, I'm gonna run for the nearest exit before the lynch mob
arrives.

Captcha: Which word is a real word? Options: cheesefrizer, cheesewringed,
cheeseblazert, cheeseburger, cheeselopocomo, cheesezul.....

Captcha's getting more and more entertaining.

I've heard of Alberta (where I live) referred to as "Canadian Texas".

If that's accurate, then I have no trouble believing that the stereotypical Texan is incredibly rare.

Texas is like any big state: it's pretty damn diverse. I've been to New York state once, and you can go from Long Island, with it's beaches and suburbs, to NYC, to the hills, mountains, and plateaus of Southern and Eastern NY, to the flatlands of Wyoming County, to the basin around Lake Ontario, all with all sorts of different people. New Jersey is apparently the most geographically diverse of the US. The very northern part of Florida sometimes gets snow in the winter. So it's bullhonkey to think that Texas, a state of that size with so many people, is just a state of cowboys and assholes, cause that is not the truth.

B-b-but I'm just going by what Spongebob says!

But yes, I am well aware that this is the minority making Texas look bad.

I assure you, I am the same as you. Well, I don't think I've ever met anybody from Texas but still.

And for what it's worth, I don't consider Texas is full of idiots. Well, there is...a certain someone I don't want to cause a derailing argument over but whatever.

Also, I always felt a bit left out on the jokes about states in US media. I don't know what the stereotypes are.

noooo, not Texas. Austin? Did you mean Boston?

Texas is all pants on head folk.
Irish are all drunks.
The southeast US is all rednecks.
California is all gay guys on rollerskates.
African Americans are all lazy and jobless.
Euros all have bad teeth and the women have hairy armpits.
All asians are jackie chan and love math.
All mexicans work for $.25/hr.

These stereotypes are all 100% TRUE! Psyche! They're just that, stereotypes. Not everyone believes them, but they sure are fun.

Fellow Texans yay. I'm from buttfuck Rio Grande Valley WAAAAAAY south though so I'm not near anything special like you city folk.

The vocal minority can go shove it. Must say though I am a texas boy at heart and always will be. Bootcut jeans, cowboy boots, wide open plains and hard work down on the ranch will always run through my veins.

But people don't seriously say "all Irish people are drunks" or "all asians like math" without getting called out on it while I saw so many people saying "Texans are a bunch of ignorant bastards" and getting pats on the back.

Eh, Texas gave us ZZ Top and Pantera, so I can never be mad at them, at least for long. If I am, I just listen to Vulgar Display of Power or Eliminator again, and everything is cool. :p

I'm from Austin so I can't really talk. Austin is just hipsters in the city and typical middle class American families in the suburbs. It's west Texas where you get ranches and cowboy hats and that shit.
