Besides, every place has a bad reputation somewhere else in the world. I mean, c'mon, I'm in Michigan. Detroit. You probably already have that image. We're humans, we stereotype and give each other crap about it. It's always the vocals that are heard and noticed, giving impressions to others, whilst those with common sense realize they don't need to talk.

Dallas, Texas here, and I'd like to chalk up another one for 'Texas is not as bad as it seems, though it does have problems'. My school's a mix of every race I can think of, our class president's Jewish, and we have a Gay-Straight Alliance Club. There are bible thumpers, though I fortunately haven't run into many. For things like Rick Perry though.....yeah, can't really defend that too well.

Thank god Florida isn't judged like that, we elected a governor who used loopholes in the medical system to steal hundreds of thousands from Medicare then ran on the platform of crushing education and health care funding.

Is lying a Texan thing? Because I didn't do that. Maybe read both my posts again? Because I just told you that he was merely an example, and not only that I didn't say that it was a reality. I just said it made vocal minority seem unlikely. Are you ready to try reading it again?

Your original post was disqualifying his entire argument, simply for the reason that Rick Perry was elected Governor.

When his post was that, no these stereotypes aren't as widespread as everyone thinks, and your post is against his, and somewhat supporting of those stereotypes, then yeah, you kinda are saying that perception=reality

I'm from Houston. Lived there most of my life. Never met anyone who fits the sterotype. Though, one thing I've always wondered. Do other states carry the same state pride Texans do? Living in California, I haven't seen a single California flag displayed outside of someones house, but I have seen Texan flags. Which kind've made me smile.

On another note, Texas is pretty big, and from what I understand west Texas is completely different.

In the cities tx tends to be ok, its when you get into the small towns that things can get weird. I'm from one of the cities but my friend came from kingsville and he says allot of the stereotypes aren't wrong back there.

I've bitched about my state so much that it's becoming unhealthy, but this time, it seems I'm defending it. And yes, this forum made me post this.

Yes, we have conservatives in office. Yes, we are a mainly Christian state. No, we are not all absolutely backwards-ass, discrimination-breeding, homophobic, racist, culturally-blind, pants-on-head retards.

I feel like we get a bad reputation due to every single portrayal of us either being:

1. A cowboy with a ten-gallon hat and a F-150.

or

2. An obese bigot with a Bud light in one hand and copy of UFC magazine in the other.

Let me tell you now that I've never met anyone in Texas even close to those representations in my life. The closest I've gotten to one of those stereotypes is the month I tried wearing cowboy boots (that got a bit uncomfortable).

Maybe it's just my area (Bryan/College Station), but my school of full of different cultures and walks of life. I'm talking Muslims, Indians, Koreans, you name it. Not to mention our openness to LGBT members. It just seems like it only takes a few retards in the public view ruining our image to make people point at us and get to feel better because they don't have to deal with this where they live. I'll admit, their is still a few of us acting like idiots and waving Bibles in front of everyone's face hoping that that'll solve their problems, but that's the dumb minority out of us. Yes, it really is a classic case of the vocal minority ruining everything.

Definitely not a Texan, but I reckon they're just jealous because Texas is one of the few states where the value of the dollar would rise if they succeeded from the union, rather than drop. And then there is the people who come from itty, bitty tiny states who resent your home state because it actually matters as part of the Electoral College system as a state in upon itself, instead of being counted as just another state amongst a collective of like-minded states in a general region of the country.

Little known fact: I live somewhere in Colorado. Do you know how we, in Colorado, find Texas while road-tripping? We head south until we smell it and then east until we step in it.

Now, I'm not going to be a stereotypical interwebber and say that nearly everyone in Texas sniffs glue while watching Hee Haw, but I am going to point out the obvious:

Nowhere ever is completely the stereotype that describes that place. BUT! BUTTER! Those stereotypes are usually well earned.

Rooster Teeth is hiding somewhere in Texas, true enough, but you also have a creepy Texaco cowboy as your mascot at the World Fair. We're not saying all Texans have a tendency towards cow loving, drinking, leaving automatic weapons with toddlers, repressing the poor, repressing women, and bible-thumping... we're just saying that the odds favor finding someone like that in Texas.
