Ahead of the official announcement, the leaked price was shown to be $799 USD

i was interested in this more than the rift but at that sort of price it definitely puts it well and truly out of my price range.

so at $200 more than the rift but with more kit like 2 controller, are people going to get it?

They are all way to pricy for me to take a gamble I am just gonna sit back and wait for the dust to settle and then if it VR delivers on its promise I will get whichever one best serves my need in the future. Unless I win the lottery then Ill get it along with the rift to try out.

Even if it was 300 I would still wait.

A pair of glasses with controllers costing the same as a higher mid-range computer...that's way too much for me. It might be worth it, I don't know the costs of development and assembly for the htc. But it's way too much for me.

At 300 I would think about getting VR glasses in the future. But only after seeing what kind of games will be released for it. Motion control was interesting, but devs didn't know what to do with it. So almost everything that was released for it was sports games and tech demo's. So far, the oculus rift isn't much different. And I'm talking games -made- for VR, not games like skyrim that you can adapt to accept VR.

The Vive comes with the HMD, the two wand controllers, the two Lighthouse base stations, two games, and the rest of the cables/hardware/software needed for the full room-scale setup. It's actually quite a hefty package compared to the Rift, especially when one considers that it's only $200 more.

And I see it brought up a lot, but the comparison to motion controls isn't a fair one. The last crop of motion controls (see: Wiimote, PS Move, Xbox Kinect) were built around either substandard hardware or were under-utilized at a software and firmware level. (the latter was especially true of the Kinect) The current crop of VR HMDs are built around the latest tech and are designed for optimal use at the hardware, firmware, and software levels.

This is not to say there won't be devs who shit out utter trash. Shovelware will always be a thing. However, designing VR games isn't like designing motion control games. You're not having to translate an awkward input method into a standard model. The models for both were designed around each other.

As for the games, well...for me, Hover Junkers looks promising - http://store.steampowered.com/app/380220/

Same goes for Tilt Brush, Fantastic Contraption, Budget Cuts, The Gallery, and a few others.

Even if it's technically worth it, I'd still rather sink my money into a new PC.

I'm not remotely interested in VR and the cost has nothing to do with it. As I see it, the technology will suit certain types of games very well, but be completely useless for other, and as I'm not interested in the kinds of games that are suited to VR, there's little to excite me about the whole enterprise. I'm happy with a good old fashioned monitor.

Well by the time it gets to Europe that is a solid grand or more, which to me is a very very nice new PC and I would probably need a new one for these things to work properly.
So it is very much "wait for second hand" situation, does mean that devs will more then likely work with an incredibly small market. No doubt some games are in the pipeline to get things going but if the sales are low you can't keep devs around for long, or they go the other way and make extra highly priced games for this highly priced tech.

Still don't understand why people are surprised at the cost of new tech. PS3's where 600 bucks at launch, and they sold out to the point of E-bay scamming.

Ya'll need to chill. Prices will drop, and bugs will get fixed. Those people forced to wait by the price are the luck folks, as you can sit back and watch the early adopters struggle and ***** about it. Then when it gets good and cheap you can then enjoy a worthy product without regrets.

Yay broke folks!

If the early adapters (i.e. suckers) don't make the primary sales worthwhile, this tech is going to sink like the Titanic. Again.

I'm willing to bet that VR fails spectacularly in the gaming arena, while it will do well in other areas. Corporations are much better equipped financially to invest in overpriced tech like VR. On the other hand, I don't know many gamers who think $800 for something like this is reasonable.

Pretty much this. I cannot imagine it being worth it at $800 without an already significant media base. I would rather get a powerful gaming PC with that. Or a PS4 and every game on it worth owning.

What are you going to do with the other 400 dollars?

*rimshot*

I kid the PlayStation....

Do hohohoho!

OP: I think early adopters of this kind of tech really are suckers but I also thank them for their sacrifice. If no one early adopted, they wouldn't make the products the rest of us buy 3 years from now at a much more reasonable price. Thank god for the early adopters, may they continue to buy crappier versions of teh products I love at an inflated price and beta test them for me!

I am going to sit this one out for another 3-5 years. I am not about to spend $1100 CAD for a really nice single person monitor that works with maybe 5% of my library. $1100 on essentially anything else is a better purchase at this point.
