So the MSN messenger is finally dead. Is that really so bad?

Hello there fellow escapists. So MSN was bugging me for an update, and today it finally told me its "mandatory to login". fine, as always, each update is worse, so i delayed as much as i could. lo and behold, it starts downlaodign skype. how time flies, its time to migrate to Skype according to Microsoft.
some official article: http://blogs.independent.co.uk/2013/01/14/say-goodbye-to-windows-messenger-microsoft-to-shut-down-service-in-march/
So, at first i was furiuos. how dare you clsoe down what once was the best IM service and migrate it to Skype of all things, one of the worst IM services out there. But then i retrospected myself, and realized that the last 2 years i only really used MSN for one person, and i got him on Xfire anyway. So no loss i guess. Still, the nostalgia clinges on to how great MSN was. so this is a sad day for IM.

So, escapists, how do you feel? did you use it? did you loose anything by this closure or will you be a happy migrator to skype. And why does LITE version of skype cant import MSN contacts anyway?
I guess the "microsoft buys and ruins" simply stand confirmed now, but whne you look clsoer at it, its kind ofl ike putting a sick animal down, merely shortening its misery. so i lost ap art of my chilhood today. but did i really loose anything. i am conflicted. how about you?

P.S. capcha: last straw
I am willing to be it knows what im thinking....

People still used MSN? I use Facebook for pretty much everything text related, Skype for voice over IP stuff, and Steam for weird gamers who refuse to get Facebook. Not that I spend much time IMing people like that.

I actually forgot MSN messenger was a thing. :p

Nah, I actually think it's a good thing it's gone. It'll make it easier to get in contact with people who refuse to use better messengers.

Meh, I've used it once. OK, not exactly one time, but only one week (and that was 3 years ago, I think) for a project where out of the group, the most had MSN accounts, so we settled on that being the IM we'd use. We could have gone for ICQ, Skype or whatever alternatively. So how do I feel? I don't feel nothing. What I recall from MSN is that it had the option to change the font and options (colour and size of the text) of what you write. I can't say I'll miss this feature. I don't know what else was there. I also recall it being a bit annoying as it came by default with Windows XP and every time I reinstalled the OS, I would go and disable it. And...that's about it.

I feel nothing - I won't weep, nor rejoice. There are enough other IMs out there. I could even go and use IRC, myself.

I still use MSN as part of my Trillian messenger. In fact, I'm talking to someone right now as it's only the client that's been killed, MSN servers will still work for at least a year.
MSN is great when you don't use microsoft products to access it.

Same here. I would have thought it died out ages ago.

Anywho, OT: Good riddance. It's not 2003 anymore, and IM clients have moved on and have become much better since then. Thus, the loss of MSN messenger isn't a bad thing at all.

I stopped using it regularly about 4 years ago when facebook chat started to become bearable, and I haven't used it at all for the last 3 years. Thankfully IM and IRC haven't died as a technology though, because I think they're way better than the alternatives...

I kinda forgot it existed, too. It was great in the late 90's up until about 2008 when everyone I knew, including myself, stopped using it.

I feel kinda sad about it :/

Yeah MSN was my only Messager to used and I did migrate to SKYPE.

While I'm not hating the switch and the new service but I am annoyed at the new things I have to get used to (I have to type into Livemail to check if I got any new email instead of looking at the MSN taskbar and copying and pasting image is different compared to MSN.
My main beef with Skype is that it's more annoying when it come to forced programs closing (I'm having abit of a computer problem at the moment) due to the whole message that I lose the whole message and etc if I shut it off competetly.

Why would you be angry or conflicted about something you never use and know you'll probably never use from this day forward? I mean yeah, it's always sad when a service disappears, but nothing lasts forever and all it's doing is losing Microsoft money. I'm sure many people were sad when the telegraph system vanished too, but keeping it around would have been ridiculous and pointless.

I haven't use it in a couple of years. I migrated to Gtalk when I was frequently getting kicked from Live while Gtalk was super stable.

I'm also not super surprised considering that I saw an article detailing a new release of Skype on Linux and that it now had an option to merge the account which to everyone looked to be the slow funeral march for the IM service.

I forgot that MSN Messenger was a thing.

I haven't used it since high school since that was practically the only way of talking to someone online, but holy hell was that thing not stable all the time. I remember getting kicked out and then having to come back and apologizing to the person I was talking to, and vice verse.

Not really sad to see it go since there's Facebook and the like to do that now.

MSN died? Really? I didn't even notice...

Serious though, given that everyone I know/knew stopped using it by the time facebook became popular it doesn't really surprise me.
There isn't any nostalgia binding me to the service either since I have no fond memories of it. Come to think of it, i have no memories of any kind related to that service...

I genuinely can't remember the last time I used MSN.

I used it quite heavily when I was at school, so maybe around 2006? God knows.

It's been dead to me for quite a while, so an "official" death isn't a big deal to me.

I'm happy to have replaced it with Skype and Steam.

In my younger days I spent a lot of time on MSN, at least 1000 hours (I played oblivion for 300 and I at least doubled my time on MSN).

It wasn't even a conscious choice to stop using it, I think I didn't have access to a PC for ages, then when I got my own one everybody had moved on and I followed. I wasn't going to be the kid who was saying "hey, I still like MSN let me be you're only contact on here" and force them to have this programme still going just for me.

MSN has been pushing new shit for ages, always getting messages about skype and outlook always using buzz words to make it sound better ... hate the outlook lay out and I will never use skype or any other online chat functionality! I don't want to chat to anybody online unless I can type to them.

I used it a lot.

Not for contacting people though, I used it since I could just sign in to it really quickly and have the number of unread e-mails I had pop up in the corner of my screen, which could then be clicked on to go directly to my inbox.

It made checking my e-mails so much easier.

Skype annoys me, when ever I turn my computer on it's there, wanting me to sign in and asking me "Are you sure you want to exit?" in a different window if I want to close it.

I use Facebook for actually talking to people over the internet (Or Ventrillo) though I try to avoid FB as the updates I see depress me (Such as a bunch of my friends whom are aged 19-20 getting engaged/married, having children and getting YOLO tattoo's)

To be honest, when I want to talk to people I go and meet them in real life and talk to them or if that isn't possible I use a magical home phone that allows me to talk to people (Seems in this "Mobile" generation, everyone forgets about landlines... People who know my mobile phone get's crappy signal in my house often ask me how I'm calling them...)

skype as far as I'm aware won't tell me if my hotmail account has received a new email.
That was 95% of my use for MSN messenger, maybe once a month I'd use it to chat with someone.
So I've upgraded to skype, realized it doesn't have this feature... don't use it.

I'm personally upset, Why? Because Skype is awful. But seriously, What irks me is that I have to use yahoo, I do indie game design and art, that being said MSN (Windows Live Messenger) Had That photo sharing thing that you could upload photos into the chat without the need to download, you both could view images in real time. I've moved on to Yahoo messenger, because it has a similar feature. So yes, I really do miss Windows live messenger. Windows live also used a lot less CPU And Bandwidth then skype, so I don't leave skype running when I'm playing something competitive like Counter-strike or some such. I guess you could say skype is better if you VOIP all day, But if you do that I think you should use Mumble or something, Mumble is free and causes a lot less problems, especially with bandwidth for my friends when we play games or share things (They don't have the greatest internet).

I can't say I'll miss it in all honesty, I've been using either Skype or Facebook chat to talk to people for the last few years now.
