Is the author involved in the process at all, or has he at least endorsed it?

Thing is, I'm worried it's going to be the familiar World War Z scenario again. Some titanic film studio simply hoovering up some recognisable title they can use, and then boiling it all down into an inoffensive, perfectly marketable mess. I certainly hope not.

I like those books. I still haven't forgotten about that wretched Thunderbirds movie.
Thank you for reminding me of both of those crappy movies.

Yeah, this is going to be shit.

I'm in the belief that the LOTR movies and to a lesser extent the Marvel Universe movies were flukes.

I always thought they'd try to make a movie. Hell, I'll go see it if they can get the screenplay right.

Oh, I remember that book series.

I quite liked the first books, thought it kinda decreased in quality after Artemis became more of a traditional hero.

Although the fact it's made by Disney makes me think it'll be shit. They'd probably turn it from an asshole extorting money out of a race of pseudo-assholes into a slightly flawed hero extorting money out of the EVIL (fairy) ESTABLISHMENT.

Finally, the trailer for Enders Game kept making me wonder why there wasn't an Artemis Fowl film for some reason. Too bad I'm a little bit... outside their target demographic. Missed that train, I suppose. I'm meh about it. Made by Disney? I seem to remember the series being fairly dark for children's fantasy, baring in mind that Artemis is the VILLAIN of the first book (if memory serves). I don't know if I care or not, if it gets good reviews I may take my brother and sister to see it, and if not I'll ignore it. It would be interesting to see a dark children's story, but I'm not sure how they'll pull it off without making it look campy.

Edit: They're releasing the first two films together? It's going to be shit. All the other studios make the mistake of breaking a story in half to make two films, and Disney makes the mistake of fusing two stories to make one film. WTF. I'm not going to see it now, so I suppose it really doesn't matter.

im hoping for the best here and im excited for this. i wanted an artemis fowl movie since i first read the first book. (it was about 5-6 years ago) but i know it will be probably shit. im really looking forward to see who they take for butler though.
and they are releasing the first two books together?it is unnecessary and stupid. can someone please tell me why they are doing this? if they make two separate movies they will sell two movies and get more money wont they? isnt that what they want?

I don't know when it started but at some point, my initial reaction to learning that a book/series I've read is turning into a movie is always... anxiety.

Then you get shock. I'm incredibly nervous.

Wondering if it should be Live Action or animated.

Voices might be easier to accept for the characters as opposed to actors playing the roles.

Seriously, who could play Artemis? Who?

I don't know...the books have too strong of focus on fantastical imagined visuals to work as a movie in my eyes. Maybe you could make something good out of it, but I'm not optimistic about the idea.

I cannot think of a single movie based of a book aside from the Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit movie that I have ever liked.
Wow really, cause that's a ton of classic movies right there

The Godfather movies (maybe not the 3rd)
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
James Bond
Jurassic Park
Jaws
The Shining
Wizard of Oz
The Social Network
Fight Club
American Psycho

etc. etc.
I had forgoten about James Bond but I am indifferent to the rest with the exception of The Godfarther movies which I really hate. Really boring.
What kind of movies do you like?
I like all kinds of movies. But going down your list:
The Godfarther- I know it is a big movie sin but I just never enjoyed it. Got just over half way into the first one and fell asleap.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest- Read the book. did not like it, never bothered with the movie.

Jurassic Park- While I was impressed at how good it looked I never was a big fan of dinosaurs.

Jaws- Big shark spend movie eating people. Got bored.

The Shining- Did not see this on the list, loved it :)

Wizard of Oz- Did not see this until I was 15 so not a fan

The Social Network- To say I don't give a shit about facebook would be a massive understatment. So you can imagin how much I want to see a movie about the guys who made the bloody thing.

Fight Club- I think I did not like this due to the fact 3 of my friends told me non stop for years that is was such an epic movie. It was just over hyped for me so when I did see it all I could thik was 'Was that it?'

American Psycho- Never bothered with this as I just really don't like Bale.

Aside from being too old, and not wanting to continue an acting career, wouldn't Jack Gleeson be perfect for this role? We know he can act, we know he can be a dick and he's Irish!

well thats ... interesting i guess.

I quite liked the books when i was younger (about the same age as artimus interestingly enough), but i havnt read the last few cause the books didnt seem to get more mature as I did.

The idea that they are shoving the first two books together as one single movie rater than the independent entities that they are is bad though. for it to make sense you need a break between stories or else its just gunna feel rushed. But judging from previous movie adaptions of books i love (looking at you, golden compass bullshit) i'll avoid this until i hear it is unequivocally good

Well it's about time, though honestly I never thought you could turn such an abnormal premise into anything digestible on the big screen. In all likelihood it'll probably just get butchered like nearly every other teen series that's been adapted.

That's great news!
I really hope this turns out great, it has so much potential!
I mean, a Sci-Fi Fantasy Heist movie? What's not to like?

Love the books. Colfer has has been talking about films for these for nearly a year now. Glad to see some progress is being made!

Not going to lie, I'm excited about this. Obviously I'm aware of the possibility of them ruining it, but I loved the Artemis Fowl books when I was younger. That said, I never actually read further than The Opal Deception. I thought The Eternity Code was a great end to the story, and while I liked Opal Deception well enough, I didn't think it was really necessary. Anybody care to weigh in as to the quality of the other four books? If they're good I'll probably give them a look.

The only actor I've ever deciding on being in one of these movies is David Tennant as Foaly. Everthing else is just in the dark.

EDIT: Oh, and if it's animated, Tara Strong as Holly Short. That's all.
If it's live action, Chloe Moretz would be my choice for Holly. Tennant as Foaly would be fantastic, though.

This does sound interesting.
I remember reading the first book a very long time ago, and being quite impressed by the ending.
Although I was probably easily impressed back then, being 12 and all.

Count me cautiously optimistic.

I remember loving the books when I was kid, so I guess it's cool it becoming a movie.

Sadly I can't remember what the books were about.

I liked the series, but I haven't read past the first four books. I do remember reading at one point that Holly becomes Artemis's love interest or something. So I think he has a "girlfriend", right?

I so hope they don't cock this up... If they play this well, I reckon it could be the next Harry Potter...!

Screamarie said:
Yes, but in the shortest terms Artemis never "hooked up" with anyone. He ended the series without a girlfriend. I just think that they'll want to crowbar a girlfriend in there because "that's the only way girls will be interested" is sometimes the mentality.
Because having badass Holly Short to look up to isn't enough. No, we need a 1 dimensional love interest, because that's what our market survey chart told us! Yay Hollywood logic!
