Is popular on youtube?

It's so fucking weird to hear someone's internet famous and you don't know who the hell they are. I think we as a society really need to reclaim the word celebrity and famous and put some sort of standard on it.

Also he's being accused of rape. Google it, I just listen to a narration of it. pretty fucked up. Also apparently he has a toy version of himself sold at Toys R Us... They're making toys of youtube people now? That's ridiculous right?

Anyway, have any of you heard of this guy? Is he actually a big deal? Is he the guy that does the high pitched voices all the children seem to love these days?

Even if such a standard could be established there will always be famous people you've never heard of. Just look at the areas you are not interested in and you will find a tonne of them. Hell, most of the celebrities you know about were probably already famous before you heard of them, regardless of whether or not they're on the Internet.

No more ridiculous than the toys of boy bands or wrestlers. The reason people make merchandise is that it sells.

I've heard of him mainly through collaborations with other channels I watch. And no, that's PewDiePie; I think Toby Turner is more about sketches.

No no. Wrestlers, boy bands, MMA fighters, I can understand. because they do things.

We're talking about making an action of a person who litterally just sits in front of a camera playing video games right? Or sketches or whatever.

I mean does Spoony count?

I mean he didn't do anything, allegedly, just said some creepy things if I recall.

Well, there is two things here:

1. He is meybe (most probably) famous within a certain circle. Marter, for example, we know here on the Escapist - I'd certainly call him a (local) celebrity. But is he a real celebrity? No disrespect, of course, but no - he is known to people who visit the Escapist and probably ones who follow lots of movie revies. And any other places Marter may be visiting, of course.

2. I want to point out how funny it is that you are against somebody being a "celebrity" without being an actual celebrity...and yet you are helping them become a real celebrity by making them even more and more fampous. 2 minutes ago, I never knew that Toby Turner is somebody with any amount of fame on YouTube. Now I do. He is literally more famous now. There would be a number of other people who'd be introduced to him now. Any time they mention him to others - same would happen.

Try saying that to someone like skrekfan246 or Roxas1359, both of whom do LPs part time. See how much stuff they actually have to do in order to make a video, because editing and putting together an entertaining LP video is a very long and annoying process, even for small channels trying to release stuff regularly. It's why Game Grumps employ two people for editing their videos.

Or sketches or whatever.
So Abbot and Costello, Reeves and Mortimer, Monty Python, The Two Ronnies, Morecambe and Wise, Fry and Laurie, all of them basically did nothing?

He was part of the big boom of Minecraft when it was really starting to become popular, if I remember right.
I actually used to watch his stuff. Funny guy sometimes, but often way too childish and eccentric for my tastes.
I only ever watched his Minecraft playthrough, but geez, that was like...2011? Or something? I can't remember. Maybe it was a little later.

You know the type anyway: Loud, shouts often, makes dumb voices WWAAAYYYY too often. It was to my knowledge that his popularity died off a little bit when the Let's Play scene got really crowded, but then shot back up.

Last I saw he mostly played that Happy Wheels game or whatever.

Checking on his channel, looks like each of his videos gets between 300,000-500,000 views on average, sometimes being up towards 1 million.

So the child plays with the action figure... and that action figure manages it's play youtube account on it's play computer? Do you see what I'm trying to say?

You take the wrestler dolls, okay they can "wrestle" each other. Thats what I mean by not doing much, what are they doing from a childs point of view that a child would emulate with a doll?

I do a lot with my job too, but some how I don't think DUDEISTBELIEVE: OVERNIGHT SECURITY OFFICER PLAYSET would sell very well.

Well... he's also famous for being a rapist now I suppose so I think it evens out XD

Ya know what it kinda does feel like though? When I went to my senior prom, they gave out the awards for the most popular blah blah blahs? I knew NONE of those people. At all, and I went to school with them for 5 years. Yeah I suppose fame is funny like that.

Maybe the toy has a speaker that recites catchphrases, or maybe children gather the toys and recreate sketches/make up their own ones.

I dunno, Five Nights at Freddy's was pretty popular. =P

Define "big" though one that definitely fits the criteria was one of the Machinima guys back around late 2010 I believe when he allegedly(haven't looked into it since) sent dick pics to someone below the minimum genital mashing age.

Why...why do you care so much?

Seriously, who cares if the dude has action figures? If he can sell them to a certain market, let him. It doesn't affect you in any way.

Eh, Justin Bieber started off on youtube. Though he was a singer and went on to be big and seems rather less reprehensible than this person

I think I remember that. Wasn't it some kind of sodomy joke he made on twitter that somebody took poorly and it basically got him fired from whatshisfacewiththeglasses? He certainly wasn't accused of actual sodomy I hope.
2 of his co-contributors had gotten together, and he made a joke about how if it doesn't work out, he'd take her and imprison her in his basement sex dungeon or words to that effect.

He then went and dug himself in deeper afterwards by arguing with some of the others about it.

Person who has several million subscribers and hundres of thousands of views per videos minimum? Kind of obvious really. Just checked it, dear old Tobuscus has been a busy boy. He's got 3 channels, (last I saw of him, he had only the one), 2 of which have more than 5 million subs.

I haven't even heard the Machinima one, though that one's a bit different, since Machinima is a company, that became quite large as I recall, with a variety of shows and content while Toby is a solo act.
So, the million sub mark? Gotcha.

And for the record, a solo act can still be a huge brand and company in of themselves. PewDiePie comes to mind.
But again, point taken.

Toby Turner/Tobuscus is mostly famous for his Literal Trailers - y'know, where he'll sing over a trailer what's happening in it. To the tune of the trailer's music, of course. Kinda funny. I did keep up with his Let's Plays for a while but they got a bit too...well, 'PewDiePie' for me so I went elsewhere. I've read the accusation now, and the whole story and everything and...I don't know what to think. There's a lot of detail, and a few bits of information that make the accuser look bad so that lends to its validity.

All I can say is I hope it gets investigated properly and that's that.
