I mean, right? I'm surprised this doesn't come up more in these megaproductive hypothetical threads of ours. Everyone draws party lines at Flight and like, strength or some shit. Laser eyes, I don't know.

My point is, why isn't this EVERYBODY'S first choice for a superpower? The implications are far-reaching to the point of absurdity, you would effectively be omniscient. And who among us, even the most our-choices-make-us-who-we-are self-determinist, doesn't have that one thing? that one nagging, inescapable thing that we'd give anything to go back and change, or undo, or re-do. it's got to be more than just me.

and so what of the minutia? the mechanics of it all, so to speak. would you rewind like a VHS tape, retracing all your steps until reaching the moment you were looking for? perhaps fast-forwarding for a quick peek at what's to come before snapping back to make use of it. Or would it happen in flashes, like selecting a chapter on a DVD, an instant jumping-to? or would you merely exist outside of time, and be able to stroll into any moment at will?

and freezing time, what would that entail? would you also freeze the laws of physics in place? if a piece of paper caught in a draft were frozen in time, could you, outside of this frozen state, be able to pluck the paper from the air as though it were being handed to you, or would it be as if welded in place to the frozen aired molecules? Ooh! would AIR freeze in time too? would you need to breathe? could you bring others, conscious, into this frozen time state as well?

let's put some bogus science to this, shall we?

You'd have to be pretty dense to get to that point, however...

As for time control? If it's as simple as stopping it, you're just as frozen as anyone else. Only even worse so if you remain fully conscious. And even if you exempt yourself from it, well...good luck getting that air into your lungs or seeing anything what with the light not moving and all.

What about psycho/telekinesis? You would literally be unstoppable if you wished. You could create nuclear explosions everywhere destroying everything.

On a related note there was an old thread about ways you could abuse having save states in real life (assuming you could load one whenever you died).

There were a lot of ideas in there that could work with this.

For instance: save game, hurt someone you don't like, then load.

Now it becomes hurt someone you don't like, rewind, now don't hurt them this time.
Slap random hot chicks ass, rewind time. Politely walk by.

shit the shear possibilities of what you could both good and evil. you could save lives, mess with people at their weakest moments. and of course most of us guys would freeze time and live out our perverted fantasies. also of course kill george lucas for the abominations that are star wars prequels.

Because some passive superpowers seem better choice for some people.

This power need time to do its magic. How about meeting Flash or someone similar ? You'd get your ass kicked before even thinking about using your ability.

Also, what would you do with your time controlling superpower when drugged, knocked-out, or suffering from surprise lead poisoning ?
Moreover, how about psychedelics in your drink ? Where would you end after LSD or PCP ?

The list could go on...

You forget that if you pause time, you are still "you" in the frozen time.

Ok sure you pause a fight againt a villain and you pick up something to used as a weapons but let talk about a scenario that depend more of your phyiscal prowless.

E.G. Time control would do well when a gaint boulder is going to hit a electrial powerplant. Yes you can move everyone in the boulder path out of safety but the real objective is to STOP the boulder from reaching the building (once it hit the power will go out, bring chaos to the powerless city).

While you can come up with a long plan and procress to stop the boulder (I dunno like build a wall between the boulder and the building) since you got all the time in the world to stop it but someone with super strength or enegry blast can make short work at the bolder at ease.

Oh in hindsight you can just rewind and prevent the bolder from happening but what I trying to get is that the time control is only as good as "you" are (like if you are phyiscally fit and healthy).

Time manipulation, in superpower choices, doesn't strike me as a thing that should be an option, because it's so OP. If the powers aren't meant to be more or less balanced, you could just have somebody choose "omnipotence" and it's all over.

Mind control. I would make sure that you didnt know you had time control.

BAM!
But how would you know your enemy had time control in order to prevent them using it with your mind control? ;) You'd have to figure out they have it before they figure out you have mind control and thus are a threat.

I agree! and when it comes to traveling you could just increase a nearby objects gravitational pull/effect on you letting you be pulled (attracted) like a magnet. (or create a antigravity-field where no particle except you would exist letting you travel at the speed of light^^.
Eiher way Gravity or Time powers would be sweet

Time manipulation is not a weapon for the many. If only man wielded that power then maybe, but then what would be the point? He'd be alone.

Personally, I always go for 'Full control of the forces of the universe' (Meaning the actual forces of the universe, not some cosmic 'the force' force). I can control gravity (And by extension time), Electromagnetism, and the nuclear forces. Usually there is a 'three wishes' sort of thing, and I'd put time in as my second wish for easier control over it, but I think I have everything covered when I control the 4 forces of the universe. FETHREEAR ME.

Unfortunately, with the power to manipulate time comes also the ultimate destructive force, an armageddon unto itself. Consider this:

"Ha! I just went back in time and rescued my murdered wife! These powers are incredible!"
"But Joe, if I hadn't died, you wouldn't have recklessly signed up for that experimental drug trial and got your powers..."
"Hm. Fair point. Ah well, I'm sure it won't be a problem."
*AN OMINOUS TEARING SOUND SHAKES THE VERY EARTH*
"Oh God! Joe, what is it? Look, over there, somethings emerging!"
"No . . . oh God, what have I done?"
"It looks like . . . a tear? A rip in the air? Oh my God, what is it Joe!?"
"It's . . . A PLOT HOLE."

Yep. Plot holes. Every single time. You'll destroy the universe. Don't do it.

Better yet, you could catch nukes and throw them back. Add insult to injury.

Might I mention there is a movie like that coming out called chronicles
