I have a simple rule.

If I don't know you personally extremely well, or expressly invite you onto my property, you leave as soon as I open the door.

Somebody had better be literally bleeding out on my doorstep before I would help them, and that help would be to close the door and call the police, and demand they are removed from my property before they are helped as I will not be held in any way responsible for a stranger.

The area I live in has a real problem with people who think they have the right to walk onto others property and beg from people both in their homes and in the street, it's disgusting, and made all the worse because not enough homes have that most basic of things.. a fence or wall.

I usually welcome people who are obviously selling something with Insha'Allah or similar, even if it makes no sense.
?? Could you please explain that? Insha'Allah is basically Arabic for God willing, why is it being used in this context?
Think he meant As-Salamu Alaykum, or some derivative thereof. Can't be sure tho.
Insha'Allah works too, come to think of it. Most people who come to your house uninvited won't know the difference anyway.
Ah, he means it as a form of greeting, I hadnt read his post properly, was too distracted by the mention of Insha'Allah.

we were about 10 were walking about our village, and a man in a suit shouted over to road to us and called us into the back of his van. Naturally we obediently got right into the van, and it turned out he was a council planner doing some community work. We answered some questions, there were other older people that properly talked to him about the area, and it took about half an hour.
reminded me of the fourth panel of this:

OT: i had a couple of god-botherers at my door. and there's the town drunk who has his own catchphrase:
"I'll fight ye fir a pound!"

Wow, a lot of people here must live in bad neighborhoods or are completely socially inept. When someone knocks on the door, I answer it. If it's a woman I say, "can I help you ma'am". And if it's a guy my response is, "What can I do for you, sir?".

Usually someone may be looking for direction or may actually need to speak to me or another resident about something important. I'm personally always happy to have company. This may be caused by my six years of experience delivering pizza though. I'm biased towards the knocker I suppose.

I answer the door with a shotgun, then I yell at those wippersnappers to get off my property.
I actually answer with a shotgun, but I keep it in my hand behind the door so they don't instantly freak out. Shell's chambered and safety off, mind you.
This reminded me of a sort of apocalypse dream I had last night. There were zombies everywhere, and the guy at the local shop was handing out assault rifles. For some reason mine was canary yellow. Anyway, I kept trying to fire it and then realized the safety was on. Not confidence inspiring, considering I'm going into the commandos in a few years...

OT: Occasional Jehova's Witnesses, and then a lot of people wanting to speak to my dad, as he's the secretary of the local fishing club.

I answer the door with a riddle, depending on answer you either get a very scathing lecture or some Belgian Waffles and I will answer your silly questions.

What time is it? The answer must always be Sheogorathian.

I ignore them usually as far as I am concerned if I am not expecting someone to knock on the door I have no reason to answer the door same with the phone.

So no I have never had this experience because I rarely answer the door.
Same with me. This knowledge really bugs my family as it's perceived as being extremely rude or lazy.

We live in flats, so we get buzzed before anyone gets to our door, just an extra layer of screening for the bastards disturbing us. That said, the only time it's been someone we haven't called for food or repairs it was a less well dressed man from the council asking if any of us were eligible to vote. I told him that if any of us were we'd have sent back the letter they'd sent us before. It took a few tries to explain to him.
