I have lost a Dog before and all I can say here, is remember the good times you had with your dog. You seem to have loved your dog so just remember how well you took care of it.

I'm not really a dog person. My beautiful Siamese cat Isaac was run over a short (very traumatic lots of blood) while ago and I still miss him sooo much, just be thankful your dog went peacefully. But the pain fades eventually, and all you start to remember is the good times you had with your furry friend.

OP: If your avatar is a nostalgic pic of your dog, I'm sorry, but that thing is a werewolf. Did it ever bite you at any point?

I understand what you are going through. I lsot my cat of 15 years last year and it is tough after having a companion for so long and then they are no longer there. All I can say is time will make things easier. My condolences.

I have a dog that is slowly getting old himself, I often try not to think of the inevitable and throw his ball around some more.
he's still fit, and I hope he stays that way for at least a while longer.

you have my sympathies.

I remember putting my dog down years ago like it's the same day. The vet came to the house and I held Sparky in my arms. He wasnt very healthy, but he was happy I was home. The vet put the needle in to make him drowsy and he looked at me wondering if it was ok. I just pet his head as he became drowsy reassuring him that it was. As the narcotics took over, he fought it a little, but then he was still. We buried him in our backyard and I remembered the good times we had together.

A few years later my parents bought a house and as they were doing the walkthrough with the landlord, my dad casually mentioned that Sparky was buried in the backyard. The landlord proceded to lose his mind about the fact a very illegal burial had taken place on his property and asked my dad to remove the carcass. My dad, being a logical human being, obliged and started digging holes in the backyard. After digging a trench that he could stand in and walk about, at 60 years of age with two bad knees, he could not find the dog. He took a bunch of pictures and tried to convince his wife and children that he was not insane. I've since started looking to homes.

Thanks for the adventures Sparky, but I've got something in my eye.

I'm sorry for your loss OP and I hope Ruby has given you a wealth of stories to reminisce on.

My own dog died not too long ago on november 14th. So yeah, my condolences...

He had cancer and was basically screwed, but having to put him down when he was still so hyper aware and even playful was just horrible. Even worse was that when we decided it had to be done, we still had to wait the entire day till the vet could make time to do it.

The last time that day I took him for a walk I had a hard time keeping my eyes dry. And when we drove to the vet he was sitting on my lap enthusiastically looking out the window, not even aware of where he was going...

After a good night's sleep I feel better about the situation. It isn't so raw of a feeling anymore. I would like to thank you all for your kind words, as well as sharing your own stories.

We already know that we want another fuzzy family member somewhere down the road, but not just yet. Life goes on.

Thank you again. I hope all of you have a great Christmas.

I remember when my first dog Amy was put down. I've never forgiven my father for it. I don't hold much else against him.
She bit him which was the reason. She was old, around 12-13 and her mind and body were starting to go. So....
Really I've come to terms with it years ago, we got a new dog 6 years back, she's 7 now. Love her to pieces. She's kinda slowing down a bit to, but she's got years left in her.

Loosing a dog, any pet thats become so apart of your life is hard. Losing any loved one is.
Your family is there for you man, and us with moral support. Remember that life carries on, but the memories are for keeps.
