$500,000? Dang, those people know what they are doing. Wonder how they are going to sell that many copies of a game.

The fact that this could be a publicity stunt by Activision wouldn't surprise me. Considering what EA did with Dead Space 2 and Dante's Inferno, it's a distinct possibility.

Funny how it happened in France, I didn't expect that. And they left the car there too (probably not theirs, but still). Poor job, guys, poor job.
"Poor job" doesn't reapply until they get caught. Until then, the situation says it was a perfectly adequate job.
True, but they still left a car full of potential evidence. I probably should have said poor planning.
Except even in your own post, you acknowledged it was probably stolen. No reason to assume that anything was left behind. And with what has so far happened, only details point to their plan working quite well.

Now if it turns out that it was their own car and/or crashing it wasn't actually intended, then yeah they might be rather stupid and have just gotten lucky so far. But in the meantime, they did what they set out to do and now have a hundreds of thousands of dollars in loot, nothing poor about that.

My buddy said he knows the delivery driver for gamestop and the store has a certain amount of allowed shrink before investigations happen. Apparently the driver "lost" one of the boxes of MW3 and was selling them for like $50 or something (this is Canadian). Now, I don't know if he does this every year, but my gut would say that they would look into this. I didn't buy one, I don't support theft like that, but it does make me wonder how many boxes of MW3 games get "lost" and if anything is done about it. With such a title like that, he could just wait and do it every year, not many other games stack up to it in comparison.

OT: I would find it funny if someone bought the game for $1,700 or whatever, just to have it arrive on November 9th because of delivery delays. I mean, it comes out tuesday, if you bought it today, it would only ship on monday.

That estimated value gives an average price per game of $91.83. Jesus christ, are games really that expensive in France?

THIS is the kind of piracy that actually does harm to the gaming industry, the DRM should totally have prevented people from stealing those copies.

I'm sorry, I just find this situation too damned funny to say something that isn't full of sarcasm.

"6000 copies of Modern Warfare 3 have been stolen" - Average Escapists response "Take that, its what people get for enjoying such a crappy game franchise, why would anyone miss these at all? Good riddance"

"6000 copies of Skyrim have been stolen" - Average Escapists response "Oh hell no, these guys deserve to burn in hell, i will personally find and murder these two for stealing from my beloved God that is Bethesda"

Me personally, I think this is a shame for the people who's preorders will be delayed because of this, I really wonder though whether the thieves were just that hardcore about CoD that they needed 6000 copies, or if they just didnt care what was in the truck.

The use of tear gas... HOW BADLY DID THEY WANT THOSE GAMES?!
And how are people blaming Activision for this?

They should've stolen Skyrim. :/
Hahaha, that's all I could think through this whole thing. Then I imagined them raiding the delivery with broadswords and draconic shouts, and I lol'd.

Damn, that's a weird thing to steal. I can't see that many people wanting to buy a cheap copy of MW3 from a shady looking guy in a pub.
I would, Activision will keep the price artificially high for years.

I was about to condemn them and make fun of them, but I had to stop and think.

Everyone wants to do a heist. What's better than heisting something you love(besides money)?

They really had to plan that out.

They're all in French... who wants to buy a French version of Modern Warfare 3? You could learn French, which would probably take a few years.... or you could just wait a couple of days and get a perfectly legitimate copy.

french people might be willing to buy french copies? i could be wrong about that though

It's a conspiracy theory amongst people who drive trucks!!!!!!

This morning on the radio(friendly banter as opposed to an actual news story) there was talk of two truck drivers with 20 tons of pizza bases and tomatoes respectively on their trucks working together to score epic amounts of pizza D:.

I bet the guys who took these games are gonna meet up with them and have a weekend and a half with about 2000 friends..

Now all we need is to get a guy with 10,000 bottles of decent beer to join in the party and we're sorted?

On a more serious note, I am glad that the driver wasn't seriously hurt in the robbery, considering how much easier it is to get hold of knives/weighty sticks than tear gas.

This reminds of the guy a while back who robbed a Gamestop & got a whole bunch of MW2 copies. (600 I think). What's with people & stealing COD games? Either way having your game robbed twice is amazing PR regardless of rather or not it's set up.
Also, on that note, why 600 copies? Most people will have it, and you'll just charge more for them, people aren't stupid.
