Gears 2 and 3 story elements:

So I just played through the Gears 3 campaign and it was all fine and dandy, but what the hell were the Sires all about from Gears 2? They were neither mentioned nor seen nor explained in Gears 3 to my knowledge. Nor were the "children" that the documents in the facility talked about. It was like they were setting up for some intriguing subplot about the origin of the Locust but then just decided "nope!"
Anyone have any insight?

Yeah, the writing went from shit in the original to pretty solid in the second to nonsensical, convoluted bullshit in the third.

So much was left out.

Really? I have yet to play Gears 3 but they pretty much just threw them out the window? That is a bit of a cock slap they basically served no purpose in the first place if this is the case.

I think that Sires were the very early/primal versions of the locust. Queen Myrrah may have stolen the lab data and faked her death, since there is a collectable you can find in the 3rd game about a female scientist passing away. I think that Myrrah is the lab worker in that collectable, and she used the data procured from the Sires to engineer the Locust that you know and love today.

BUT, that's merely a theory I have, since EPIC hasn't really released alot of information about the Locust origins.

Eh, I'm fine with that. It was a bit of a shit plot point, and they weren't fun to fight anyway.

I think the dev team just decided to watch the Resident Evil movie halfway through development of Gears 2.

Also, I miss the Kryll.

According to the Gears wiki miners exposed to Immulsion mutated into the Sires, and their children(who were infected with lambent cells) were the original locust. The sires were put into stasis in the facility where you find them in Gears 2 in an attempt to research them and discover a cure for lambency.
This would explain why the locust are effected by the lambency cure at the end of Gears 3

However I haven't seen any mention of this in-game, and the Wiki page seems to occasionally contradict itself, so I don't know. It's one explanation.

There are a lot of things that were built up in the books and Gears 2 that were completely left out in Gears 3. I'm hoping that the DLC will start explaining them. I've seen some good theories out there, but so far that's all we have: theories. I, for one, want solid proof. Although, fighting Myrrah again the other night and taking forever--I hate that boss fight--she did say something that I hadn't heard before: "Don't you recognize us? We are your best traits, distilled. Oh yes, we are monsters, just like you!" or something like that. Of course, since the game never explains what she means by that, once again all we have are theories.

Oh, I like this. It seems to fit most of the pieces together.

I haven't played 2 in so long that I forgot that... but in other Gears 3 plot holes I can't figure out:
So was me getting the fuel for the submarine pointless? I go through TWO WHOLE TOWNS to find fuel for the damn submarine so we can take off, and then we get there and everyone is like "Man, I sure wish he had fuel for this submarine.. I guess we'll look for some here and hopefully get lucky!" Did I miss something?

I thought the first one was pretty decent in terms of writing. It wasn't anything award worthy but it made sense and I never stopped to question what I was doing or why I was doing it.

This reason ALONE is why I absolutely detest DLC and online game updates. It allows them to release an unfinished product at full price and then charge AGAIN to have the finished product.

I thought you were getting fuel for the truck to get to the sub and then you have to find fuel for the sub.

They stop off in Mercy and Griffen's town to get fuel for their truck. They didn't get any in Mercy for obvious reasons, but they do manage to get some from Griffen. Then they drive to the drydock and get the sub.

Yes, but shouldn't this have been explained in the game?

I love the game, it's just as good if not better than its predecessor, but its story isn't really praiseworthy. It's not excruciatingly horrid, but it definitely isn't going to win any awards.

Though, I must say, even if it was a deus ex machina, I've gotta respect an ending that actually fucking ends the game.

EDIT:

Good question. Why are the Kryll gone from Gears 2 and 3? And the only Berserker you see after 1 is the lambent one? I thought they were pretty interesting enemies.
Well, the Kryll's nesting grounds got wiped out when the Lightmass bomb went off at the end of 1. It actually kinda makes sense, seeing as how a strong flashlight is enough to outright kill Kryll, so something on the level of the Lightmass bomb probably caused a mass extinction. Its also what woke up the Worm :/

As for the Berserkers, I dunno. You see a couple in cutscenes during Gears 2, but I guess they figured they'd rather focus on different enemies. Gears 2 was pretty packed to the gills when it came to setpieces, so it didn't really need another Berserker fight. And we got the Lambent one in 3, plus the normals in Horde.
