Like I said, Martin can be a fun read, but he isn't all that sophisticated.
This may be my inner savage speaking, but I never understood the appeal of art being so pretentious other than to stroke the egos of those who enjoy it and those who made it? Enlightenment is good and all but sometimes I'd prefer just an enjoyable adventure or a simple message rather than having common sense, in the guise of something seemingly deep and profound, shoe horned in and I'd prefer that books, movies, music, and video games not be judge by that.
That's fine, no one ever said Game of Thrones can't be enjoyed. Like I said before, I can enjoy Game of Thrones in the same way I can enjoy Stephen King. That said, people tend to get insulted at the slightest hint of criticism towards the series. Martin really doesn't say anything profound in his work, and frankly I don't think he really tries to. He just writes because he enjoys it, which is fine, but it doesn't have the same complexity as a work of classic literature. His world building is pretty good, but then, so is every other decent fantasy/sci-fi writer who ever lived. World building is a minimum requirement if ou want to be a wrter.

You have to understand that classics have existed for a reason, and that reason isn't ego stroking. people simply appreciate the time and effort it takes to write a complex book, just like musicians appreciate Beethoven, or artists appreciate the mona lisa.

Anyway, PM me if you want to talk about it, because we're getting really off topic.

It's definitely something that can be greatly improved upon.

My favorite male characters would probably have to be the male cast of TF2. They are a bunch of mercenaries that act more like a bunch of clowns (or idiots ) straight out of 90's cartoon. It's great. I also like how it extends to some of the sub characters as well.

That doesn't stop them from having good stories either. When the time calls for it, they can get into some pretty engaging stuff.

You got Scout the hotshot and has a thing for single moms (and Pauling)

A drunk off his ass demolitions expert who despite being wasted 24/7 manage to keep all of his limbs intact (his eye had more to do with messing with magic as a kid than being a drunken idiot)

Blind American compatriot soldier who is not only dumber than a pile of bricks but seriously believes that all of his team members are Americans as well (and the crew wants to keep it that way for their own benefit)

A maniac doctor, whom if it weren't for that healing gun would most likely be booted off the team already for half of the unethical, and questionable stuff he does to his "patients"

Heavy, a man who appears and admits that he's not the brightest in the box. However he loves his gun Sasha, was rumored to have a love of literature, and is very protective and secretive of his family life and past.

Spy, who you think would be the smartest of the bunch but for some reason always ends up hanging with the two dumbest people in the crew (scout and spy) and subsequently lands himself in jail, or close to it.

Sniper, an outback Australian that somehow avoided looking like Saxton Hale like most of his compatriots due to the huge amounts of Australium there. I want to say he's the most sane of the group, but that whole "Jarate" thing makes me question that sometimes.

Engineer, is the team member with the most amount of common sense. Which honestly is saying something.

and finally Pyro...no one really knows much about Pyro to be honest. But aside from his thrill of setting victims alive, he seems like a nice guy.

I mean, you can just feel the amount of fun the fanbase has with these characters. This is a game that I feel the AAA should be more like in terms of male characters.

They are CHARACTERS each has their own backstory (okay most of them) that are fleshed out and explain well. They all fit a sterotype sure, but in such a way that it adds a new twist to them.

Apart from all the cliches and the whole tough guy with an ace to grind image, which is pretty annoying. Shallow as it may seem i always find them too old and ugly. I suppose i wouldn't mind this if they happened to be a biy more likeable in general . GTA is a classic example of assface-and-brain-itis.
