Zedla or Metroid. Two games that have game play so polished, you will go blind from the immense shine of awesome. Fun games that focus a good deal on game play and have enough story to keep on interested but is never too in your face.

I don't think I could do this. Gaming can't be summed up in one game. I'd show them as many different genres as possible.

If I may say so, thats really strange.

But anyway, I would show them Timesplitters 2. Awsome game.

Any simple game with simple controls: Super Mario Bros, Sonic The Hedgehog or maybe LittleBigPlanet if you want something a little more modern.

That, or using any of the Mario Parties, Guitar Heroes, Singstars, Buzzs, Wii Sports and whatnot as a stepping stone to other types of gaming.

I'm going to go with the crowd - it would depend on the person.

If I discard that particular notion, I'd say Ico, or perhaps SOTC. Both games represent the very best things about gaming and what it can potentially mean as an artistic medium.

Id slap him over the back of the head and shout at him for keeping his head in a cardboard box, then I would give him final fantasy 7 and devil may cry with a PS2
And shortly afterward the guy regrets ever asking about gaming.

Sorry, I kid. I just think that a structured RPG like Final Fantasy would be a bit frustrating for a first time gamer.

Super Mario World. Don't ask me why, but I don't even really need to think about it. The answer is Super Mario World.
I'm with you on this one. Dunno why, seeing as how I picked it up the other day and was appalled at how bad I was at it. But it's a prime example of this form of entertainment.

Nothing! I would just go out and have some fun with them, instead of sitting in front of a pc all day... But If I didn't answer your question, I'd be a dick, wouldn't I? My suggestion would be Fallout 3. If the "friend" didn't find anything about that game funny, then he is not fit to be called a friend of mine!

I was thinking the same. Mass Effect has lots of different components from different genres and a great story.

Depends on the person. If they like a good old-fashioned army sim, COD 5. A fan of horror films, resident evil games. If they're young at heart and enjoy cartoony things which are just plain fun, then Super Mario games are the way to go, plus brawl. If they want a good story I won't hesitate to direct them to either Fable or Final Fantasy X. Finally, if they want to shoot things and make stuff explode to release stress, I'd run with a therapy course of Saints Row 2 and Halo games.

EDIT: And I think everyone should play the old platformers and brawlers. Streets of rage 2 and Ristar are in my opinion prime examples of the best of the 2D era, as is Golden Axe.

I would put them on something familiar, relatively easy, and co-op, say the Lego Indian Jones or Star Wars Games. They're challenging enough to be an introduction to gaming, while helpfully bringing along a story that they already know and love, and can easily immerse themselves into.

Either Halo or Portal for an FPS, otherwise head straight for the original Crash Bandicoot games.

Halo for its simplicity and fun, Portal for its ingenious concept and immersion, and Crash Bandicoot because it was my own first game, and I never turned back.

I think I'd probably go with Gears of War. Really it's the perfect example of the games of today. If not that then an old 2D platformer, probably one of the sonic games.

Spyro and Crash, EarthBound, or Cave Story. Givin' them a glimpse at platformers, RPGs and the general awesomeness of 8-bit.

I'd suggest and RPG like Knights of the Old Republic or and game that's impossible to lose like Braid. It's hard for a new gamer to get the hang of the controls for most modern games.
