So what can the Xbox One actually do? Aside from play games?

Yeah so, finally getting the new tech in a few weeks, I probably should of asked this before I put 100 dollar preorder down on the Call Of Duty bundle but...

I know Xbox One is being advertised as an all in one entertainment system... What does that mean for me?

I mean whats this... I can run my cable box through it and watch TV on it? Can I do picture in picture while playing a game and keep audio? Cause I'd actually use that, I usually keep a TV show on as background noise with whatever I'm doing (especially if I'm playing a game that's grind-y or multiplayer)

You know what a Smart TV does? What with the allowing you to access your social networking and media streaming sites.

Well, the Xbox One does that too, with the added benefit of allowing you to pay Microsoft for the privilege of using the apps that would otherwise be free.

Depends on where you live. If you're outside of America, then fucking nothing.

Seriously, the TV stuff doesn't work outside the US, and even inside the US it works with some cable companies and not others. How well does it actually work? No idea, I can't be arsed to spend the money and find out.

To put it simply it does what a smart tv does but worse.

Personally I can't see a reason for ever getting one, especially if you have a pc.

This. I'm in Australia and I really only use it for games and Skype. You can use the HDMI in for other things than TV though. When at my friends house, we plug his computer into the HDMI on the Xbox One and are able to switch to it from games and back. Useful for when playing music. Doing that, I don't believe it has Picture in Picture though. Never seen an option for it, but also never thought to use it if it is there.
Going back to it being useless out of America, I didn't realise (just thought it didn't work) that we didn't have "Xbox on" until one of the more recent updates. Canada didn't either (though I knew many non-English speaking countries didn't). I thought English meant English worldwide.
About cable, no idea. My family doesn't have Australia's version of cable, so I really can't test it even if I wanted to.

So since I don't own a smart TV, and I'd be paying for the Xbox Live anyway, this isn't an issue for me.

Though, Xbox 360 already does the social networking and the Media streaming. Do you mean it'll automatically post to my facebook account when I get an achievement? Dumb as it is, I would like that.

Can it do the gameplay recording like the PS4 does?

I think you can share it through social media, but it doesn't do it automatically.

Yes, but only 30 seconds worth (with "Xbox record that"), 15-30 seconds worth (automatic [footnote]When something "record worthy" happens in a game, like every fucking keeper save in FIFA.[/footnote]) or 5 minutes worth (with Game DVR).
So, to make a let's play or similar, you'll still need a capture card of some sort. Streaming through Twitch is unlimited though.

What's this? I can stream on Twitch? That's a thing? I'd use that like constantly.

God I feel old. I'm buying a unit and I'm not even sure what it does.

Yep. As long as you have a Twitch account, Gold and a game, you can stream to Twitch. With Kineckt, you can broadcast your face and, either through Kinect or the headset, your voice is broadcasted.
Also, unless you're getting the Kinect-less version, make sure you disable your Kinect microphone in the Settings app before playing online. Singing Muse's Supremacy to an unbeknownst audience is embarrassing.
Don't forget to renable it if you're streaming with it (using the headset it better though and you can use the camera without its microphone active).

I got one about a month ago and what I really like about it is just how quickly it turns on and loads games.

I come home from work and while i'm setting my stuff down and walking to the fridge for a drink I say "Xbox On" and it and my TV and surround sound are all turned on. Then I mutter "Xbox go to Titanfall" and Titanfall is up and running before I can even sit down.

If I were to say Xbox go to Destiny while Titanfall is running within 5 seconds Destiny is up and I can play it. Pretty crazy really. A lot of my games on PC take like 2 minutes to load up and get through the opening cutscenes. We're talking 5 seconds for XB1 loading.

Aside from that you can control your cable with your voice. "Watch ESPN" "Watch CNN" "Volume Up" "Mute". Plus it has a custom guide feature where you can set channels on your TV as favorites and have a favorites section with all your favorite channels right next to each other. Makes browsing better.

At the end of the day it's a game console with some perks. Nowadays you can grab it for like 400 bucks with a game. Really what more could you ask for?

Higher frame rate, better resolution, like say the standard now of 1080P, not having to pay twice to use the internet, hardware that wasn't outdated two years ago... Just to name a few that I could ask for, but I am sure gimmicky voice controls is amazing.

So you leave it all on standby just so you dont have to plug it in and can turn it on with your voice? even though you could turn the previous consoles on with a controller which you will need to play on the Xbox one anyway er ok whatever floats your boat id personally rather save electricity and have the very minor job of having to stick the socket in the wall when I want to play.

Dont know about Titanfall but there is no way you are playing Destiny in 5 seconds of booting up that game a minute or 2 yeah by the time its found the servers your character and loaded the loading screen for you to choose where to load to.

Interesting you mention how fast games load though my SNES loads lightning quick so fast I cant remember seeing a loading screen on it actually I flip the switch and the game is on the screen.

At the end of the day it is a games console with perks but it also has some negatives which others have pointed out especially for the first few months of its life lets not pretend it all roses for any of the three consoles.

Actually have you just paraphrased the Xbox One advert?

Look, I know that being stuck up on the internet is a really cool thing and all but when a One player has the ability to play games that look pretty amazing regardless of what hardware is running it, resolution that is damn fine on just about any television I've seen it played on and a focus on frame rate that is getting most everything coming out soon pushed to 60 (thanks to incessant whining) I don't really see the issue unless you're a friggin' robot.

People with attitudes like yours... really doesn't help to sway opinion on PC gaming, just so y'know. It creates a toxic community.

That type of response from Strelok comes with the territory my friend. So unless you take good fun in calling him out I'd just ignore him, he'll ignore you don't worry. If people get angry at each other than we won't have much of a fun time so leave him to be a grumpy grump if he wants.

My brother picked one up at launch annnnnd played through Ryse (which he said was boring and didn't look any better than current gen) annnnd now there's basically nothing. We already had a 360 and all the games on XB1 so far, until October that is, have been ports. He doesn't have cable, so the cable box thing was kind of pointless. I don't know if Microsoft actually thought this through: if you sell a console to the mainly 18-34 market, you're gonna attract some college folks. People in college are poor (also, poor people are poor) and thus cable doesn't matter much to them. The same always-online element that they eliminated is also a problem for people watching TV. Don't get why they're treating games as ancillary.

I have also been told that the Kinect has a lot of issues with identifying words, from my bro and others. My bro has a slight speech impediment, he unplugged the Kinect because it wouldn't listen to anything he said.

When Destiny came out and he found out he had to renew XBGold just to get online to play it, he turned it off and hasn't turned it back on again.

I just read the other day that they're finally releasing a 1 TB version of the console. Way to catch up, Microsoft. Course, I could say the same thing for Sony. That's really the only reason I'm waiting on the PS4.

My advice is to keep your 360 or, at best, grab a PS4. At the very least, you can play Outlast.

I was going to originally but I remembered the last time, it wasn't fun nor was it even a civil response but a complete twisting of my original quote so I decided it's best to left be and report if the response isn't civil.

No can do. This'll seem petty, but I made my ultimate decision based on my Gamertag. I don't want to lose it, plus I like the little Achievement Unlocked when I do something in a game.

I was debating getting a game PC for a while, but eh. Screw it. People go ZOMG the graphics, but quite frankly I thought GTAV on the 360 looked pretty damn good, I don't really need photorealism.

*hope I formatted that right, kind of new to forums* EDIT: I didn't do it right. Hmm. Apologies.

Not petty at all. That's the same reason I bought so many multi-platform games on the 360. I see now you were just asking about the merits of the system, that was my bad. Apologies. Microsoft burned me with the reveal though, and my brother got it because all his friends wanted to keep their gamertags too. Then he got bored with CoD and it turned into a brick. Again, this will probably change next month, what with all the huge games coming out, but still. I would recommend keeping the 360 til we see what happens with the XB1. The 360 is a games machine; the XB1 is an entertainment system (CF: Yahtzee). Nearly everything coming out in October will be prettier on XB1, but is still available for 360 (cept maybe indies, but I'll leave it up to you whether that's the system-seller or not). They're not abandoning it yet. Unless you thought the one thing Assassin's Creed was missing was a focus on MMO-style gaming, us current-gen-ers are still getting a new one too. Can't figure out why there's not much reporting on it... (hashtag gamergate)

My personal plan has been to look at the past. We usually get a much better value (see 360 at launch vs. $250 250gb wireless 360 now) a few years into the generation. They've already committed to at least 3 years of support for 360. Keep your gamertag, friend. I want to keep mine too. For some reason, achievements work better than trophies for me as well. I feel your pain on choosing, but this industry relies on us consumers not being patient. That's why we get GOTY editions that often cost less than the game did at launch, with way more content. Patience is key here. But if you have the extra cash on hand, have at it. Come back and let us know what you thought.

Oh, oh, one more thing too: games have to install before you can play them now. Not like the 360. If you've ever popped a disc in a PS3, you know how bloody annoying this is. Especially when you're unsure of the game's quality. It took a half hour+ to install Ryse, and golly was the time wasted not worth it.

To my (admittedly limited) understanding its a dressed up old PC with most of the multiplayer functions (that i know of) locked behind a paywall.

But one thing i know for sure, if you live outside of the US, spending that money on a smartphone or saving it for a decent PC would yeild a more versatile device.

...yeah i dont have a high opinion of it. But at least its got Warframe now. Though i dont know if thats behind the XBLG paywall or not.
