Just came to me whilst i was reading the news on Escapist, that now we have two opposed groups, we surely cant call them both Anonymous can we? And, just as a side note, who would you want to win?
Well, to be honest if your going to go there, it's kind of important to note that the guys who said that they wouldn't be going after the PSN users could actually be the rogues, as could those who might just be freaking out because they are suddenly afraid of the potential consequences having associated themselves with the group might bring.
To be honest it seems like the core of Anonymous that actually gets things done, the organization within the non-organization so to speak, are definatly in support of going after Sony as we can see by the results.
I'll also be blunt, a lot of people seem to not "get" this group, and never have. There is more to it than really being a non-organization that anyone can join by posting anonymously. Anonymous has even gone to great lengths to point this out, and warned people quite bluntly that there is a definate differance between Anonymous and the hordes of /B/ and similar sites, even if they might seem to be the same thing at times.
Looking at this, I have some increasing suspicians that mostly the guys who are talking about "rogue" Anonymous are simply scared /B/tards who can't take the heat over the association they tried to give themselves due to fear of getting vanned since we're actually seeing a serious response for once.
That said, I don't approve of a LOT of things Anonymous has done. I do not approve of their actions defending Wikileaks for example. In this case however I think Sony brought this upon themselves through their actions in removing the "other OS" option from the PS-3, and how they chose to try and explain themselves to justify their actions. They did something that was just plain wrong, to a massive degree, even if it can be defended as legal, heck if it was illegal there would be no need for a response like this from Anonymous as the authorities would have handled it.
Right now, the situation continues largely because Sony has refused to admit that it was wrong, apologize, and make apologies and gestures to show it plans to change it's ways, at least in this respect of their business.
On a lot of levels Anonymous is defending your right to the control of your own property, and to expect the goods you pay for to be able to perform the functions you purchused. I don't think Anonymous are a group of heroes overall, but there is absolutly no way I can fault what they stand for in this action... but at the same time, I'm VERY careful to point out that you have to judge each thing they do seperatly, Anonymous is hardly a group of white knights, despite some recent "hacktivist" activities. One day they are defending internet freedom and the rights of consumers, the next they are terrorizing some (admittedly annoying) little girl like Jessie Slaughter who annoyed them.
