I recently got a little into headphones and found out 2 major opinions:
1) Skullcandy is shit
2) Monster's beats by Dr. Dre are way overpriced (some peapole said that they were shit too)
So I ask you, what do you think are the best headphones out there?

P.S: I myself own the AKG K518 LE

I've so often looked at those brightly coloured Skullcandy headphones and come within an inch of buying them, but you have to step back and realise they're just cheap headphones with a nice paintjob and a jumped up price tag.

Personally i always go for the Sennheisers. At home i've got a big pair of super-comfy cans (i don't know the specific model off hand) and for my iPod i've got some CX 400 II which are just damned good.
They're never cheap, but they're a good investment. My cans are about 4 years old and i abuse them badly, but they still work perfectly and my last set of in-ear ones lasted about 18 months after being dragged with me everywhere.

I love my skullcrushers, but I need to find a pair that fits my head a bit better.

Sennheiser HD-280 are my favorite (though I haven't looked at headphones in a while)
They are over the ear studio isolation headphones.
I think they sound great, and the sound isolation works well. (I use them when I play drums)
They are a very nice quality set of headphone and go for about $80.00

I HATE Skullcandy! I bought 2 sets of cans from them, one of them broke at the rim (TWICE!) and the other just completely lost sound after a while unless the wire was contorted in some weird way, I will never buy SK cans again.

But that's beside the point.

I actually use Sony cans now, the kind you wear with the bar around the back of your neck rather than over your head, and I quite like them.

I have several sets by Phillips, and I love them because they are really cheap and still sound great.

Possibly my best set and they are only $30

Bah, I usually just buy the cheep panasonic earbuds when they go on sale. Suprisingly West Jet (the airline) has very durable earbuds, my last pair lasted me almost 4 years.

Comfort wise the Sony DJ style are perfect for me. I used to wear them 4 - 8 hours a day back in my WOW days.

Sound quality, I have no idea. I'm too cheap to spring for anything over $50.

Not my shitty MDR-G45s. Haven't owned a pair of street style Sony headphones that haven't 1) fallen apart, or 2) developed speaker buzz. I like the form factor, I hate the build quality.

well, i don't own them, but i have no doubt that these are the best headset money can buy right now purely because they're a flagship audiophile grade headset made by one of the most respected audio manufacturers in the world with enough custom engineering to make high-street equipment look like kinder egg toys.
http://www.sennheiser.co.uk/uk/home_en.nsf/root/private_headphones_audiophile-headphones_500319

however, i would recommend getting the biggest drivers you can purely because it lowers distortion
the new corsair headsets have a very good power delivery across most ranges, but the actual headsets are rather flimsy
my friend and i both have corsair headsets and the bands broke on both of them in under a year
the structure is rather weak, but the sound engineering is impressive for the price-point
if you take good care of them, they may last longer

the ones i intend to buy next are:
http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/Product_ID/263

i have been doing allot of research on them and apparently due to the open backed nature of headsets like this the sound quality is vastly improved at lower levels meaning less distortion in quieter sounds and more crisp highs

possibly not the best for gaming, due to it's sound leak but it's a crime not to have an audiophile set plugged into my sound card ( asus stx )
also it doesn't have a microphone, but as anyone who has tried a shotgun mic set-up will tell you that's possibly a good thing, the tiny carbon / condenser mics in headsets are universally terrible anyway

I'm currently using a Razer Megalodon 7.1 gaming headset. Great for, uh, gaming with but not usable for portable music players or anything due to the USB connection and the big ol' box that's stuck to it. Also, expensive.

I favor the in ear type (cheap ones though...then thease wear out i might consider getting a Sennheiser set provided they make them)

...I have some Sennheiser cans...though I dotn know about cans, they dont do much for me unless I turn the volume up (which I hate doing)

I have a rather expensive set of turtle beach headphones for gaming..which are pretty good

beats really are the best. in my opinion, just you should try and get them when they are like
on sale/ cheaper/ preowned

because they are just not a realistic price range for casual music listeners
