so what else are they going to try to "monetize"?

And I came up with it first.
Pay up.

(No, wait. Blizzard. Damn, damn, damn...)
Somethingawful, as well. Though I hear it has its benefits.

OT: It's hard to guess. I'm with Bill Hicks on the topic of this. Marketing folk are the scum of the earth, and are not fit to live.

Anything. Everything. It may sound like a cop-out, but as long as the industry is driven by money, they'll try to find new ways to charge us.

"Oh, you haven't paid your Console Bill yet. I'm afraid you can't play your Xbox360/PS3/Wii/SEGA Genesis/whatever."

"You can't get multiplayer as advertised until you pay half of the price. Never mind we just sold it to you for full price!"

"Every time you press the 'START' button, you owe us a quarter. Pay up!"

Anyone else waiting for another video game crash of 1983, or is it just me?

Functionality. Want our game to work? Pay for the patches. Did one of our patches break the game in some way? Pay for the next one.

Honestly, I hope this (the subscription thing) just falls flat on its face. I want this Kotick guy to fall on his face. Or get fired. Schafer had it right, he needs to fuck off.
Hey Sony has taken us halfway to paying for patches. Charging for a function that is right there in the XMB to patch your games automatically.

Next thing the console makers are gonna start billing us every time we put a disc on the sistems, (because what we paid upfront is not "enough" so we have to keep givin them money for the privilege of playing) and then they will charge us for button pressing (whit multiplier for several buttons pressed at once)

TOTAL BULL"·!"$$

Here's the way I'm going to approach the subscription service.

"Fuck you Kotick, I already pay subscriptions for Xbox Live and Playstation Network. It's not like your games have any dedicated servers to maintain in the first place, anyway."

EDIT: I want to point out here that I have no issue with paying for XBL and PSN, but there's a specific reason for that. See, there's this special thing about them where you actually get something back as a reward for paying for them. Discounts, early demos, the fact that it's their servers that you're helping to maintain, etc. Call of Duty, however, would give me nothing. It's not like the multiplayer's any good anyway...

Isn't it too late for another video game crash? It's now quite mainstream, and there are probably enough people out there that buy games to keep the gaming market alive, even if the hardcore/ average gamer stopped buying games.
Possibly, but I know someone in the industry (from Bioware, I think) has commented that both the bottom- and middle-ends of the market have fallen out. If that statement is accurate, then the industry will (a) become so top-heavy as to either collapse beneath its own weight or (b) open up the bottom ends to a Blue Ocean strategy that will basically rework the industry from the bottom up.

Or it could just mean Sequelitis will set in for the next forever or so.

This is the ultimate flaw of capitalism, I'm afraid - money, and the fact that everyone always wants more of it.
The only thing we can do is not purchase subscriptions, but I don't think that in the long run that will make any difference.
It's the flaw of unchecked capitalism, for sure. Looks like it's visiting my favorite industry. I just hope it doesn't stay long.

I think they should try to monetize hammers next. I hammered the shit out of a nail earlier today with a hammer I purchased years ago. The hardware store hasn't seen a single fucking dime from me since, and I think that's ridiculous. I should be paying them every time I fix something, shouldn't I?

As this recession continues to sap everyone's disposable income, it makes a lot of "sense" to squeeze every last fucking dollar you can from consumers of nonessential entertainment...

As a member I can say it does.

Anyway; I removed my explanation, not kind to the escapist to make advertisement for other boards :)

I agree with everything buy it being a purely recreational hobby. It isn't for me, and it isn't for many.
Did you just nitpick a qualifier in the name of pro gamer peen flexing?

Because if you did, that's really pathetic.

Video games are recreation. That some people play at a high enough level to earn a smattering of tournament winnings doesn't really change that. You certainly wouldn't use the word "many" to describe them - not relative to the number of total gaming enthusiasts.

Anyways, more fun with analogies! Earlier today, I played some volleyball. What if Bobby Kotick had sold me the ball? Would he require me to pay him every time I wanted to play with it? Would he make it illegal for me to play in my own yard so that he could charge me rent to play in his?

Why can't a person fucking own anything anymore?

No, in fact, I hate MLG and all that crap. It's more one of the only 2 recreational activities I ever do than pro gamer.
Huh. I mainly game for recreation myself, but that doesn't make it any less... recreational? I don't follow ya, dude.

What free element of this hobby is going to suddenly start costing us money?
Short answer: Everything.

Long answer, everything already costs 'us' money, but more and more we are going to see those costs directed at the end user (player) and going directly to the publisher.

'Free' online multiplayer isn't at all, every server out there is getting paid for by someone whether it's groups of friends, clans or server companies farming out advertising space in games. Publishers are moving to try and cut these people out of the equation by running their own account servers, game servers and matchmaking. Fine, but ultimately it leaves us to pick up the funding gap.

I don't like this, it removes options from players and is ultimately going to end up hurting us. I'm quite happy to donate to a clan's servers pot as it I get a say in what and how it's run, as well being part of a community. The way it's going we're still going to be paying our money, but the publisher will dictate everything. It sucks, but there you go.
