If it could, then why would it not? The Gamecube let you play GBA games. And the Wii U plays everything except 3DS games via virtual console.

Chances are it won't. Just because the console uses cartridges does not mean that it'll use the same cartridges as the 3DS. It'll probably play 3DS ports. But there's nothing to suggest that it'll be backwards compatible with ANY console other than speculation.
Gamecube required a Gameboy adaptor, and the Wii U doesn't let you pop in your Gameboy games.

Not saying it doesn't have the power to play them, but doesn't mean it will, even if it uses cartridges. The NX may use cartridges, but it doesn't guarantee it will play 3DS games, or DS games, or anything but whatever is made for the NX.
I mean.. That's exactly what I pointed out.

And the fact that the Gamecube required an adapter is irrelevant. It was designed as a home console, but still played handhelds.
Sorry, just tired of people being so sure of things we don't know for sure.

It appears that you are in no hurry, yes you should wait, there may be a price drop. For all we know the NX will be backward compatible with 3DS games.
That's a pretty smart direction really. NX is meant to be portable as well as a home console, right? So I could totally see them doing that. I mean, it would encourage new units sold. Because you can upgrade, still play old games, and it helps to harmonize total product line up. I'd approve of such a way to help bring it all together to minimize costs and maintain dominance in the handheld market. After all, trade ins are about store credit, so it costs Nintendo nothing and it helps move products ... but also make other consoles cheaper so they can move underpriced stock from the last gen as well as a reinvigorated complementary revenue stream.

I like that idea.

So yeah .. I'd wait, too ... because I can see nintendo going in that direction, as well.
