Hey guys! I'm kinda new to the escapist and haven't made a discussion forum before, so pardon me being a newbie and such.

Anyways, here is the question: "What does being hipster really mean?"

This question has come up frequently in my life and I haven't really got a solid answer yet; I have ran out of options and I decided to turn to the internet for answers! What I'm also looking for, is being hipster a "good" thing or not, and are you hipster?

So if you could please enlighten me on exactly "hipster" is, that would be much appreciated.

Thanks guys,

Hipster's are people who don't like mainstream things you do like and who like obscure things you don't like.

Oh yeah, it's a bloody epidemic.

Which is rather ironic, considering the main trait of hipsters is to like things nobody knows about :D

Wonder if anyone else has posted this..
I think predetermined categories for people are all ridiculous and stupid. Too much variation. A thousand subsets are inside every one. All bullshit really imo.
Still, I like this video to describe hipsters.
What do you get when you take a hobo, add some emo, and a touch of metro?

I think the problem there is we don't have categories properly enforced. If we had rules for what you have to do to be given a particular label, they'd have a lot more meaning.

But they're still useful as they are, since there's no other way to convey as much information about someone in anywhere near as short a time.

I agree... It may not be the most efficient way of describing someone, category's that is especially because we have no "rules" and too many variations, but it sure does get the message across. Am I right?

It's this generations "student counter-culture": Hippies, Punks, Goths, Metalheads, Emos, skinheads... hipsters. People who don't like the impersonal "suit and tie" professional world, who want to be seen as an individual, so they rebel to be unique and stress freedom and individuality, unfortunately they all rebel in the same way as their friends, which just creates it's own exploitable culture in itself.

Hipsters are defined as moulding their identity out of old fashions and things that no one uses any more. They wear old horn-rimmed style glasses, even if they don't need glasses. They ride old style fixed gear bikes, have their own retro style that looks awful (but they know they look awful, and they are only wearing the clothes for the irony of it: To make a statement about fashion, and to get noticed.) and try to make things that no one else has heard of a big part of their identity (hence listening to unsigned bands no one else has heard of)

I'm sorry; it's just I knew what I though a "hipster" was, I really just wanted to know what others though is all. My bad.

Hipsters want to be popular, but can't be popular through conventional means so they made there own exclusive social hierarchy where they're on top.

Oh I'm just messing with you, just giving a "Hipster" answer. It's a stereotype of people, usually early 20's, who don't do anything mainstream. They're all about "The Little Guy" and against "Big Corporations" but only buy Apple Brand products, or drink at Starbucks, etc. etc. They liked Music Group X before they sold out, or they wore a brand of clothes, before they sold out and went mainstream. All of their favorite stuff you've probably never heard of. I think Cracked [http://www.cracked.com/funny-4573-hipster/] said it best here:
"Hipster" is another one of those subcultures that is hard to nail down. It can refer to any number of bands, people or situations. But just like emos have bitchiness and goths have acne scarring, hipsters can generally be identified by their completely unwarranted arrogance.
In general Hipsters supposedly act like they're better than other people because they've rejected societies norms and knew stuff when it was underground and not mainstream.

The best way to measure it is by using the Skrillex scale, where Skrillex is relatively hipster by exactly 1.0.

A normal person tends to average around 0.1 to 0.3 Skrillexes, because everyone has a few eccentricities and weird things they like. You might get someone who is really boring, conformist, and has no opinion different from the herd mentality. That person is going to be very low on the Skrillex scale

Then of course, you get people who are so far gone that they're effectively off the charts, and eschew all forms of modern transportation in favour of lying in the middle of the road to whine about how unique their taste in music is

I'm pushing for this to be accepted as an SI unit.

:O Dude, I so remember like months or maybe years ago in a hipster thread and you posted that song and I listened to it and I think I showed it to some friends and I was like "How did I hear about this song in the first place?" and now I was totally reminded and it's life we've come full circle and I know we don't know each other but I feel like we do?

OT: Yeah, uh, I guess hipsterism is disliking mainstream things because they are mainstream. But effectively it's a lifestyle or clique, like emo or skater or prep or whatever it is you kids do these days. I think it's less of a big deal than people think.

Hipsters get off on liking things before they were popular.(really just get off on liking something before you liked it)
