:O Dude, I so remember like months or maybe years ago in a hipster thread and you posted that song and I listened to it and I think I showed it to some friends and I was like "How did I hear about this song in the first place?" and now I was totally reminded and it's life we've come full circle and I know we don't know each other but I feel like we do?

OT: Yeah, uh, I guess hipsterism is disliking mainstream things because they are mainstream. But effectively it's a lifestyle or clique, like emo or skater or prep or whatever it is you kids do these days. I think it's less of a big deal than people think.
Sounds like me alright.

Improving everyone's lives, one day at a time :D

Damn straight. But to reference a previous discussion, there wasn't a single trilby in that whole video. There were, however, snapbacks.

Don't worry, I'll drop it now.

Yeah, it's pretty much that. Also, they go out of their way to avoid anything they perceive as "mainstream", regardless of it's actual quality, and look down on anyone who doesn't mimic their douchy lifestyle.

Fair enough. In any case, it seems the Hipster culture has bled over into other things. I do occasionally have to stop what I'm doing and laugh at someone going "why did I stretch my earlobes? THEY WON'T GO BACK! OMG THIS WAS SO STUPID!" or something like that. Similar incidents include permanent damage to hair via dying (some verbal irony there) and piercings that left scars.

I like the ideabehind the hipster culture, being wanted to be seen as an individual, fighting against corporationalism, and trying to show that you do not need the newest accessories to feel good about yourself. The problem is that hipsters tend to become major dickheads, looking down at people who do not conform to their way of living. Basically the idea is good, the execution is bad.

I know. Apparently being cool is refusing to gauge life decisions in any capacity. It's as if they're blind to the idea that they might look like a freak.

In fifty years, there's going to be a bunch of wrinkly pensioners walking around with three inch diameter holes in earlobes that come down to their shoulders. And I've seen earlobe sagging occur naturally. I can only imagine what this will result in.

Can't wait for the day, when I'm an old man, and see some other old guy with giant holes in his ears.

I'll probably die of laughter that day :D

You have that bookmarked, don't you?

Because you know that every few months, somebody here is going to ask about what hipsters are...

OT: Well, how about a few quips, since the general idea has been explained?

[ul][li]Why do hipsters hate rivers?
Because they're too mainstream.

[li]If a tree falls in the woods, but nobody is around to hear it, will a hipster buy the soundtrack?[/li]
[li]Man: Have you heard that new hipster joke? Hipster: Pfft, I got it on vinyl.[/li]
[li]How did the hipster end up burning his mouth on pizza?
He ate it before it was cool.

The lightbulb was better before it changed.

WAIT A SECOND. The GameBoy isn't "Retro"!

Anyways, Hipsters are quickly overtaking the Hippies as my most hated sub-culture. Right next to "Gangstas".
You hate the hippies? Why would you hate a sub-culture that died about 40 years ago?

Being a hipster is being deliberately unique for the sake of being unique, even if you do actually like something 'mainstream' or whatever. The kind of person that writes a poem because they want other people to perceive them as deep and thoughtful, rather than because they actually are deep and thoughtful.

It's this generations "student counter-culture": Hippies, Punks, Goths, Metalheads, Emos, skinheads... hipsters. People who don't like the impersonal "suit and tie" professional world, who want to be seen as an individual, so they rebel to be unique and stress freedom and individuality, unfortunately they all rebel in the same way as their friends, which just creates it's own exploitable culture in itself.

Hipsters are defined as moulding their identity out of old fashions and things that no one uses any more. They wear old horn-rimmed style glasses, even if they don't need glasses. They ride old style fixed gear bikes, have their own retro style that looks awful (but they know they look awful, and they are only wearing the clothes for the irony of it: To make a statement about fashion, and to get noticed.) and try to make things that no one else has heard of a big part of their identity (hence listening to unsigned bands no one else has heard of)
Wow, this definition is kinda...sad . I had my own explination, but i'ma go with this . Now i pity hipsters :(
