So what should we do with the Mass Effect universe after Mass Effect 3?

As many times as we shut our ears and go,"a-la-la-la-la, can't hear you, a-la-la-la-la-la!" we have to face the fact that the Mass Effect game franchise is coming to a close. I know, we all can't wait for Q4 and the final battle for the galaxy, but this is it. This is the THIRD game in the TRILOGY, third act everyones waiting for the curtain call. I'm sad to see the third game coming because it's the end of Mass Effect. I mean, we spend allthis time blasting thralls and Reapers and once all the threats are gone and we have a chance to enjoy the world we saved, it's over? It kinda feels like a kick to the balls, like you've been rebuilding this old '76 Camaro only to find out you're about to move. So what should we do with the universe Bioware has made?

If you ask me they should go MMO. I've heard talks of books, comics, and even a Japanes cartoon(before you get excited remember what they made Dr. Hasley look like when compared to the original Dr. Hasley? Imagine Shepard or Liara going through that process), but Mass Effect is a universe on par with Star Wars. Those other mediums only show parts of that universe one at a time and at the writer's conveinience, meaning for a book that takes one year we'll probably only scratch the surface of one planet. Bioware designed Mass Effect to be a place where players can explore at their own pace, besides turning Mass Effect into an MMO isn't impossible. It's all already there:classes, races, alliances, seedy underutilize of crime, space, exploration, and even making fleets(or guilds, in ME I'd like them to be called fleets). Plus, it's not like the story is over. We got rogue AI, cultists, mad scientists that grow other species organs inside of another, pirates, slavers, machines, a race of AI beings, this all exists even after Shepard defeats the Reapers. Of course, this game may be somewhere between 10-50 years after the series, allowing the galaxy to return to chaos. There are interesting startup locations like the Citadel or Omega, prestige classes, ongoing community of others who what to explore, and a cavalcade of things to do. Someone wil assuredly flame me for saying this because it would ruin the story(as seen in WoW when compared to its RTS predecessor), but this is POST-Mass Effect games, meaning after. When writers write,"the end," it means,"the end," it's done in that timeline, but since this is after, the previous story can still stay in tact. Who knows, maybe you could link your ME trilogy Shepard into your MEMMO character's universe and see how that unfurls. Thing is, since this is in the future we are unable to alter the past.

So those are my thoughts on what we should do with this masterpiece and saving it from rot and losing it to time. We all love Shepard and his universe even more, that's why I and maybe others feel like we need to keep this thing going. I mean, just stopping at ME 3, now that the universe is safe from Reapers we have a chance to explore it and indulge ourselves a little, right? So what do you think we should do with the Mass Effect universe?

Maybe expect them to make something new, and not cash in on more rehashed shit.

Yeah, also forget about it forever.

They said the story with shepard would be over, but not the franchise so expect some cash cows to appear over the hilly horizon.

They could probably do whatever spin-offs they wanted with the IP, and an MMO would be pretty cool, or an RTS. Anything really, they could go completely nuts with it.

I just hope they know when to quit so we all remember it as a great trilogy with some great support material and a few good spin-offs, rather than something they kept milking until we just stopped caring and any love we once had for it was extinguished 14 crappy tie-in releases before.

Gears is also going to have this problem. I hope they don't mess that up either.

My two most wanted games:

-We get to play as a Quarian on his/her pilgramage. This would ditch the epic story in favor of a more personal one, but I would very much love to see it. They could make it so it's not long after the Geth have become self-aware and the Quarians have been banished from the Council for creating an AI.

-Alternatively, I'd love to be a Turian commander. I'd like to experience the duties of being in charge of a large, powerful fleet (not an RTS, though). They could make this tie into the Krogan Rebellions, in which the Council turned to the Turians (who were the newcomers back then) to defend against the Krogan.

A few years back Bioware opened their Montreal Studio and after they were done helping out for ME2,they gave them their first IP, Mass effect "after3". They already said it's not going to be Shepard but they ARE making games in the ME universe, they also strongly hinted towards a "multiplayer" mass effect.

So...it's not really a wonder what they'll do, they already announced it...

As saddening as it is to see a great trilogy come to a close would you really be satisfied if they left us hanging or postponed the third game indefinitely? I'll miss my Shephard and the characters I've gotten to know over the course of the games, but the Mass Effect universe is too expansive and detailed not to continue in some shape or form.

As interesting as an MMO sounds, I get the feeling the Mass Effect universe would become trite and annoying if there were thousands of other people running around as Ardat-Yakshi's or what-have-you. Also, how do you write a plot that stands up to that of the current Mass Effect games?

I really would love to see more, and if anyone could pull off making an interesting game after Shephard is out of the limelight I have no doubt it's Bioware.

MMO's, Gears of War/Uncharted-style multiplayer games, prequels (Torphin/First Contact War), spin-off stories (Quarian/Turian/Asari adventures) management sims (help Aria/TIM build and control Omega/Cerberus)...

Spin it off into oblivion. Sure, some if not most of the games might suck, but the universe is too amazing to leave alone.

I would be perfectly happy if they just left it alone. Seeing as apparently they're not going to do that, I shall simply wait and see. Then complain that it's not Mass Effect after I cave in and buy whatever they put out. Blast it...

All I ask is that they don't allow many ridiculous novels to be published like the Star Wars extended universe. It's fanfiction gone rabid and part of the reason I gave up on Star Wars (the other being... you know... George Lucas). Let the Turians keep their dignity!

Forget about a space opera that's been around for the past 5-6 years thats been both a cornerstone and milestone in both player to NPC narrative, exploration, romance, and depth? Really?

Hopefully they will end it after ME3 and some DLC. If they don`t i will probably buy whatever they release next, but i will only think of it as a cash cow and not some great franchise that once existed.

Oh please.

Someone's over glorifying this a bit.

Let's not forget your great narrative depth will always stem down to 3 options; Baby kicker, Saint, and emotionless robot.

Don't blame me what I just wasn't blown away by Mass Effect. I'll admit that it was very long, but it wasn't very good in my eyes. I don't think length alone sells an RPG. This was really more of a shooter.

I want an Elder Scrolls: IN SPACE type thing.

Except made by Bioware and with a good third person camera angle.

Why do you people think that if they make a game after ME3 it will simply be a "cash" cow?" I love the Mass Effect universe, its my favorite sci-fi world and I know I'll sound like a fanboy but I bet if they do come out with a MMO or another game it will be on par with the previous 3 games.

Flame away.

I don't know how much of an impact ME has really had, but I love it to hell. To me, it's one of few franchises that deserves some spin offs because of how awesome it is.

Hell, the sheer staggering depth of the universe they've created is amazing. The amount of detail and content it has is just staggering in my mind. To me, it's like the Star Wars Universe, except so many times better.

As for the future, I just want to see as much of this universe as I can. I mean, we've only got a taste for some it so far. Think about what you could make from just Omega, Illium, or the Citadel alone.

I'll tell you what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna put the series in the back of my mind as another great gaming memory (assuming ME3 is up to snuff) along with playing TMNT: Turtles in Time, the late nights of playing Sonic 3 & Knuckles and finding all the emeralds in the first 3 stages, and speed-running Banjo-Kazooie, and then I'll move on to greener and greater pastures.

Maybe I'll go back to competitively playing fighting games... haven't really sat down on those since high school.

I want to play as Garrus: Years on the Citadel. Like LA Noire, Mass Effect style...or Mass Effect Law and Order, starring Garrus. Solve crimes, and don't take no nonsense from criminal scum.
