As many times as we shut our ears and go,"a-la-la-la-la, can't hear you, a-la-la-la-la-la!" we have to face the fact that the Mass Effect game franchise is coming to a close. I know, we all can't wait for Q4 and the final battle for the galaxy, but this is it. This is the THIRD game in the TRILOGY, third act everyones waiting for the curtain call. I'm sad to see the third game coming because it's the end of Mass Effect. I mean, we spend allthis time blasting thralls and Reapers and once all the threats are gone and we have a chance to enjoy the world we saved, it's over? It kinda feels like a kick to the balls, like you've been rebuilding this old '76 Camaro only to find out you're about to move. So what should we do with the universe Bioware has made?
If you ask me they should go MMO. I've heard talks of books, comics, and even a Japanes cartoon(before you get excited remember what they made Dr. Hasley look like when compared to the original Dr. Hasley? Imagine Shepard or Liara going through that process), but Mass Effect is a universe on par with Star Wars. Those other mediums only show parts of that universe one at a time and at the writer's conveinience, meaning for a book that takes one year we'll probably only scratch the surface of one planet. Bioware designed Mass Effect to be a place where players can explore at their own pace, besides turning Mass Effect into an MMO isn't impossible. It's all already there:classes, races, alliances, seedy underutilize of crime, space, exploration, and even making fleets(or guilds, in ME I'd like them to be called fleets). Plus, it's not like the story is over. We got rogue AI, cultists, mad scientists that grow other species organs inside of another, pirates, slavers, machines, a race of AI beings, this all exists even after Shepard defeats the Reapers. Of course, this game may be somewhere between 10-50 years after the series, allowing the galaxy to return to chaos. There are interesting startup locations like the Citadel or Omega, prestige classes, ongoing community of others who what to explore, and a cavalcade of things to do. Someone wil assuredly flame me for saying this because it would ruin the story(as seen in WoW when compared to its RTS predecessor), but this is POST-Mass Effect games, meaning after. When writers write,"the end," it means,"the end," it's done in that timeline, but since this is after, the previous story can still stay in tact. Who knows, maybe you could link your ME trilogy Shepard into your MEMMO character's universe and see how that unfurls. Thing is, since this is in the future we are unable to alter the past.
So those are my thoughts on what we should do with this masterpiece and saving it from rot and losing it to time. We all love Shepard and his universe even more, that's why I and maybe others feel like we need to keep this thing going. I mean, just stopping at ME 3, now that the universe is safe from Reapers we have a chance to explore it and indulge ourselves a little, right? So what do you think we should do with the Mass Effect universe?
