I always viewed Shadow of the Collosus as art. Aside from the obviously beautiful graphics the lack of monsters or other people created an amazing atmosphere that really resonated with the game.

Anything. Even Twilight is art.

Yes but is it good art, or effective art? :p sorry but that's the question I'm asking of games here.

Scribblenauts and Drawn to life 1 & 2 makes me an artist.

Seriously though, in the end, I don't care whether or not video games are art. I just want it to be good, playability-wise. I want to buy it, kill it, beat it, shoot it and defeat it. Then turn it into Gamestop for another one. Games are meant for it to be played and thats it.
And that's a fair enough opinion. There are so many games however that make me want to play them even after I've 'beat' the game (I'ver played 3 consecutive runthroughs of Baldur's Gate as more or less the samer character for instance, making only subtle changes every time. It's like re-reading a good book, only some bits change every time. That is a great example of how games are an ever-evolving art form).
And Fallout 3, I have all 1500 gamersocre on it yet I'm in the middle of my 2nd full runthrough since I got the last achievmeent. It's not a sense of challenge since I clearly know I can beat it fully on the hardest setting. It's like a good book or piece of music I can't help but return to, and thus, I argue, every bit as good a piece of art as that book or song.

Punkrex, I like a lot of stuff but you may have gathered I love my RPGs, as the best example of a game where the content and experience is directly defned by the user. I do however play all sorts from racing (Wipeout ftw) to team games (COD and L4D) to shooters or stealth games. I guess I like any game that is immersive, unique and has character. I like my games with style!! (Playing Z.O.E right now, and maaaan does this have style.)

i really do love portal, bioshock and fallout (the others i have'nt played) also i believe a few survival horror games are wonderful experiances such as amnesia dark decent.
Anyway art isnt tagged as entertainment, it's usually called aesthetic experience, and i wouldn't call Requium for a dream entertaining though it's still a great example of film making.
However a lot of art tries to convey a message or informs the audiance of something. I think video games can be art at the rate they are progressing and becoming more complex in their story telling.

Atmosphere is one of the greatest strengths of a game, its how it effects you directly. Its proberly one of the bigger parts of the games as artwork discussion along with overall style (thats more about creativity though) which is something alot of mordern games over look (im not talking about better grapthics) which really, REALLY annoys me.

There's a remake on the way on PS3. That should be more easily affordable for you.

Planescape: Torment. Great art design, great characterisation, but most of all, great plotting, writing, and story. When you can take some point of view, opinion or idea away from a game, that then influences your thinking or perception of the world in a significant way, yeah, that's art. PS:T did that, probably as much as the greatest pieces of literature I've read.

Limbo. Duh.

Oh, and Wind Waker.
Loved Wind Waker, it generally felt like an epic journey but somehow never got boring and that Tornado God fight was AWESOME.

The style was amazing to, which is proberly the biggest high point in a game for me (I know im shallow) and yes I HATE GRITTYNESS, it just basically justifys not trying to make it look interesting.

Deus Ex, you could talk about the multiple ways of doing things and how every person will have a different experience making games a more adaptive art form because it isnt just different in interpretation its also different in the way its shown.
