So what was wrong with the old Dante?

Chill out man, all we're mad about is the fact the director made him a self-insert, not the fact he was redesigned. This isn't /v/, we aren't going to freak out over something as trivial as a redesign.

It's because new games sell better when they're gritty, dark and emo, apparently. I think ninja theory just watched The Dark Knight.

As for new Dante looking like Tameem, this is common practice.

Adam from Deus Ex: Human Revolution is based on lead artist JJB.

I thought this was a reboot, not a prequel.

In fact, I'm pretty sure this is a reboot instead of a prequel.

I don't like it... I asked why he has black hair and my friend replied because its when he was younger... I remember reading the manga and seeing him as a little kid with his brother Virgil... He had white hair... so let me get this straight, he was born old enough to have white hair, then grew up to the point of having black hair, then grew up to white hair? or is it that he shrunk from a teenager with black hair to a little kid with white hair who THEN proceeded to grow to a guy with white hair or what the fuck? Hell even if it is when he was younger, his appearence hasn't grown since he was like what, 25, tops? why should his hair change... Other then that I don't like how his face, it looks to thin and feminine, combined with his emo angsty expression I am rather blah towards him... the way his hair is cut and just generally grows out in the picture is rather offsetting for me, the hair line itself, while closer to my own, just doesn't look attractive to me... The shoulders on his new vest are rather... weird as well... Considering he was voted 'sexist video game character' for a few years in a row I'm surprised they would make him undergo so many changes to purposely try and make him, 'most unlikeable emo whiney kid who bitches entirely to much' of the year... But I guess being dislike is whats considered popular this year, I mean just look at all the views Justin Beiber has on his youtube videos from people who disliked it, and came to the page knowing full well they would dislike it.. I blame the internet...

Preface: haven't actually played any DMC.

So there are 2 likely reasons new Dante looks different.

1) Old Dante was getting boring.

2) Having a Devil May Cry reboot with a new Dante will sell better than a Devil May Cry clone. Brand recognition/loyalty etc.

But dante's always been a douche?

id otn know, there's really nothing wrong iwth him, by appearance wise, he doesnt tell much of a story. this dante does. you could craft epics about this guy just based on his picture. What can you really say about dante based on his picture AND HIS PICTURE ALONE. He's a pale haired dude with a big sword and is the kinda guy who looks like he'd walk up and take your girlfriend from you if he was in real life?

In the end, it doesnt matter. id ont think this will stop many DMC fans from buying the game, and they'll eventually get over the crying, like CoD fans got over the Shift from WW2 to Modern day.

Well to be fair, Dante was always a complete fucking douchebag. Well, more along the lines of a **** which technically speaking isn't very far off.
And he was always fairly emo looking. He's just a different flavour of emo now.

On topic...I'm looking forward to this game coming out. I've loved all four games so far (yes, even DMC2), and I want to see what they've done and how they interpret the gameplay and story.

The new look does not enrage me in the slightest, and I'm vastly amused that people even are.

How, though? I'm really rather confused what makes people say this.

Also anyone who says Nero or his royal highness emo king super douche 1st is cooler than Dante will be hunted down and killed for the good of the human race.
Nero has much better taunts and the best general fight music in the series. Also, even considering he only has one melee weapon, he's just as much fun to watch fight.

I can't comment on the new Dante. I don't know much about him, after all. You know...'cuz the game isn't out, yet, and the trailer doesn't give much detail.

"'This is meant to be an origin story, so this is Dante before you knew who Dante was,' he explained. 'There is going to be some interesting changes and twists to what people think they know about Dante or where he came from. We aren't planning on deviating greatly from the path that is there.'"

Whats wrong with the new one? Its a prequel, do you want your characters looking the same in prequels? That makes a lot of sense I suppose.

Dante followed that formula of "it's really cool for the hero to be bored by villains and to act aloof while listening to heavy metal music". AKA douchebag. See Metalocalypse for details. Essentially that show parodies the spoiled douchebag mindset, and if you watch that, then play a few rounds of DMC, you begin to notice that Dante follows the same checklist that a comedy cartoon is using. Which would be okay, except that DMC is trying so hard to be serious.

Also, whenever I see him I go into a violent fit of screaming "douche". His overall appearance adds to that.

OT: So I don't really see why anyone would have a problem with Douche Beta. He's been upgraded to follow douchey trends. When he was first made, it was popular to have trench coats and dyed hair. Now it's popular to wear skinny jeans, muss up your hair, and generally slap on as much eye liner as you can physically get away with. So prepare to gobble it up, he's upgraded his douchebaggery to the modern era 8D

Captcha: Not ispicate indeed, good sir.

I'd like to bring up two points, one, Dante has ALWAYS looked like the douche king of the universe so I don't see why having him look like the douche king of the universe once again is such a big deal. 2, isn't this game supposed to be when Dante's a teenager or something? They kinda HAD to change the way he looked, cause having him look the same way in his teen years as he does in his 30s is just lazy character design.

I hate it when people say "change for the sake of change" like it's a bad thing.

That being said, I'm going to reserve my opinion until they actually release something worth critiquing. Like, you know, a game.

... Dante from Devil may cry has been re designed for the reboot...
I think you missed the part where Capcom said that the new DmC isn't a reboot. It's a prequel to DMC3...so a prequel of a prequel...
Uh...no. Its a reboot. Its a new universe, with a new timeline, that doesn't effect the original games.

I guess you missed that part.

As for the character design, yeah its completely fucking terrible. It removes many of the attributes that fans love about the character(the white hair, the brilliant red jacket, the "no-smoking" rule of thumb), and quite honestly, he looks like a crackhead working at Hot Topic.

But the fact that the game is being developed by Ninja Theory, a team who can't do a great action game to save their lives, is the much bigger issue.

Oh, no wonder. People are using a different definition of "douchebag" than I do. I'd always associated it with complete pompous jerks (usually who dress a certain way), not cocky self-confidence in general...you know, since that kinda expands the pool to the point where it devalues the insult.

Then again, even by your definition, Dante's only a douchebag in DMC3. And only for the first half of the game. Where does it come from elsewhere?

I never liked the original Dante, to be fair i only played the 4th installment, and even there i liked 'the guy with the weird hand' more, mainly because of the fighting styles, as for personality they might as well be mute for all i care.

I think I remember the same thing happening around the same time DMC4 came out the whole everyone hates Nero thing. I guess time will quieten the rants.

I have played DMC for the start and very much like them. But I have no problem with the "new" Dance. my problem is Theory Ninja developing the game. :C
