So what's the 4X crowd playing these days?

I guess I'm the odd one out here, because I didn't enjoy Endless Legends at all. It feels bland and tedious, especially the endgame. Nowhere near enough variety for my tastes. The diplomacy is shallow, AI predictable, and all the units feel too similar.

And as far as I'm concerned, a proper 4X fantasy game should have a spellcasting system, like in Master of Magic or Age of Wonders. Endless Legends just feels like a budget Civilization clone with fantasy graphics. I'd far rather replay Fall From Heaven (Civ mod) than EL.

Well, Civilization is THE 4X game. Not necessarily the best of the best, but the one everyone knows and most 4X-lovers play. You should probably expect most games to follow what it established.

OT: Eh, I've been trying to get more into Civilization IV. Though V is generally still the one I play the most. I would play other games, such as Endless Legend, but the time commitment of 4X games can be a tad off-putting.

Speaking of 4X, anyone tried the new Tempest expansion for Endless Legend?

The new faction, and the new mechanics it introduces, truly make the game feel "complete" in my opinion. The sea was always extremely barren, but now the whole map is useful/in play to a certain point.

Civ IV caveman to cosmos mod had an update last October that I missed, that meant I could actually play through on a real world styled map without the ungodly RAM requirements that the monumentally huge map that the previous version had. They really made the symbols for a lot of things much clearer. So mostly I've been playing that.

Hum contrary to most, I'm in no hurry for Civ 6 and adopted a "wait and see" approach, the 4x i'm most looking forward to is Endless Space 2 <3
Then again i'm the kind of person who finds civ games unplayable without mods like caveman 2 cosmos/sage of man/nights, like seriously they reduced the number of techs in civ 6, how is that even possible?!?

Anyways on to 4x ive played in the last 6 months:

-Civ 5 with mods: have been toying with mods, have yet to find one that equals caveman 2 cosmos for me and the one i found that adds features like order and crime, i find mostly annoying (what? one of my cities has outright rebelled and seceded cos my crime was too high? What? TWO of my cities have seceded cos my order is too high? Now i gotta conquer them? eughhhhh) so the search is on.

-Fallen enchantress: been toying with mods, overall whilst i wished this game had an additional expansion to beef up unit customization options, this is still a 4x i greatly enjoy

-Master of Orion: massive disappointment, i can't believe another forumite here not only enjoyed it, but RECOMMENDS it.
Goddamnit guys, don't settle for mediocrity just because of fancy graphics!

-Played Beyond earth with echoes of earth mod which makes game far more interesting and i like the rp aspect of how you deal with earth (this mod places a bigger emphasis on storyline then the original where "fate of the earth" is something you resolve at the very end of the game once you have high affinity, not in this!). To give an example, i built an optional wonder that allowed me to reestablish contact with earth (earth stays in touch with you during your first 50 turns before circumstances prevent them from continuing to do so) and continued to embark on projects and questlines afterwards just for the rp and story aspect. Overall i enjoyed this more then i did my civ 5 game (heresy!), it's still no alpha centauri but modders have done a good job salvaging this game,

-Distant worlds:
Played a game of this recently, i love to relax by just watching my many thousands upon thousands of ships just populate my empire like some sort of blood cells. Nothing says prosperity by seeing the massive activity going on in your empire, gives you a true feeling of life <3

-Galactic civ 3:
I'll have to catch up on this, haven't really played it since launch and honestly all of the dlc for it seems to be mediocre for my tastes, but ultimately i play gal civ for the ship designer system anyways.

-Pandora: it's allright'. Feeling like a civ mod isn't an inaccurate description, even if it does do have major divergences. I haven't touched it in a while and haven't felt the need to, maybe if i hear of a big mod it might tempt me back.

-Endless legend: i need to get back into it, probably will do when all the expansions are on sale at the future but for now it's its space cousin im interested in.

Civ V badly, love the look for Civ VI, have bought every Civ game on day one since III but just don't have the time any more, so... might be the end of and era..

Just officially pre-order Civ VI's Deluxe Edition.

Still peeved we don't get to exactly know what comes with the Deluxe Edition, but heh, leap of faith I suppose.

I generally don't like scenario map since they feel very limited and a lot of the new map type aren't really to my liking (I hope they kept the awesome fractal map from civ 5), so the deluxe is a hard sell since if even just one of the DLC is one that I wouldn't get then it's more expensive than just buying them when they come out.

I'd do it if it meant the first expansion would be free.

In all honesty, I'm just crossing my fingers and hoping that the DLC that comes with Deluxe edition will include Jadwiga + Poland (considering she was on the leader leak, and that you have a winged hussar in the release trailer), Isabella as an alternative leader for Spain (leader leak), and Persia, which was hinted at by Russian leakers a few weeks ago.

I'll be mad if I only get scenarios, to be honest.

Funny, as most said, for me it is Endless Legend, too. I was intrigued and then totally ammazed by Endless Legend and couldnt rest until I managed to beat it on a reasonably high difficulty level. Jesus, that kind of investment is mostly reserved by me for Bioware games only ^^ and Civ of course.

They did more than that. They also added districts into the game, workers now go away after the do three improvements, you can now boost research by performing certain tasks, revamped civics system
