True, it was made public. There was also that guy who quitted and give away names. However, I'm pretty much certain that if Anonymous breaks up, some new guys will arrive and take the mantle or try to say that it was never gone in the first place.Demonicdan said:

Let's also say this bar has a core of regular customers, though there's never more than 45 percent of them in attendance on a given night. However there's always a random pool of occasional visitors in attendance, some of whom want to participate. Also, a fair percentage of the regulars and casuals are actually cops keeping tabs on them.
On Monday night someone at the bar says, "Hey let's go tip over some cows."
For whatever reason the idea sounds fun to half the regulars and some of the "casuals," so they go out and knock over some bovines.
That's Anonymous.
On Tuesday night, a heated discussion of the Federalist Papers turns into a plan to burn down the local court house. Most of the regulars and a slew of newcomers grab some torches and pitchforks and soon the building is ablaze.
That's Anonymous.
On Wednesday they watch a marathon of "Golden Girls" reruns.
That's Anonymous.
On Thursday they find out that Al Qaida has opened a bar down the street. Everyone puts down their drinks to go vandalize the place.
That's Anonymous.
On Friday someone says they should make some t-shirts for the bar. They do and some people buy them.
That's Anonymous.
On Saturday a rumor spreads that some guy down the street likes to kick puppies. All of the regulars and all of the casuals go and lynch him. It later turns out he was a veterinarian who took care of "sick puppies." Nobody gives a shit or apologizes.

On Sunday somebody brings in some twisted porn and starts passing it around.
That's Anonymous.

1) *chan lurkers who think that theirs is some super secret club, which makes them think they're somehow superior.
2) A group of script kiddies who are always either high and mighty cunts who think they're Guy Fawkes reincarnated or wannabe anarchists who think they're Guy Fawkes reincarnated.

To put it in ridiculously pretentious terms, think of it as an anarcho-syndicalist collective and untethered state, just with a broader focus than labor. Beyond that if you're looking for goals or characterization or identity, then you're approaching it from the wrong angle.
