So what's the Social consensus on a guy giving a girl his number?

I hate giving out my number, apart from to builders because I know there's fuck all chance that they'll ring me back.

What is this ?Like construction workers? carpenters? Mechanics? I am so confused. LOL

Ask her out. Giving her your number (without her asking for it) and saying "well if you like me just call me!" is basically just saying "I can't gather the courage to ask you out and get rejected, so this will be much easier".

If she says no, oh well, last census there were a couple billion other women in the world.

I think it's a good idea. Since she's at work she'd probably feel forced to give you her phone number. At least by giving your number to her it's her choice whether she wants to call or not and it's not nearly as scary or awkward as a guy asking for her number. It's kind of hard for you to get to know her as you're checking out at her register so I'd tell her you're interested in chatting when she has the time to perhaps get to know her. That way you can see if you really do like her beyond how pretty she is.
