Also, does that mean the skating game genre is dead along with it?

Lately I've heard that the Tony Hawk games are pretty much rubbish. And I'm just curious as to when this started happening and what the last good THPS game was. I haven't played all the recent ones because I've got too many other games to play usually. But I was thinking of picking up some newer titles, at least the good ones.

Your opinions?

Also, Steam needs THPS games. And a lot of other games I like to play but they just don't have.

Probably the last good Tony Hawk game I played was American Wasteland. I tried out the Wii game that had that skateboard controller. Didn't think much of it.

Also I remember reading that his last game barely got any advertisement. Which resulted in very poor sales.

I remember putting hours into 2 & 3 especially. I believe after 4 they got pretty mediocre.

The last game Tony Hawk game I played was I think Tony Hawk's Underground, which I think was the second open world game in the series. I wouldn't call that one bad by any means, but maybe stale? I dunno. Maybe the jump to open world wasn't too kind to the skating genre. Maybe it was the attempt to bring in the new control scheme for tricks using the analog sticks.

I think it started going downhill at around 4.

The skating game genre did not die with Tony Hawk although it did beat it to a pretty pulp with shred and ride. EA's Skate series are the greatest skateboarding games ever made. If your wanting a fantastic skate game go for skate 2 it is the best in the series.

Tony Hawk Proving Grounds was a lot of fun. Loved the ability to make your own sort of park (somewhat limited tho) but also the array of places you could go in the City. Also enjoyed the door that lead to the top of a building and dropped you straight down at lighting speed. :D

The last game I really played was American Sk8land on DS, and I enjoyed it quite a bit 4 or 5 years ago. Tony Hawk was a pretty big part of my childhood gaming on the PS1 and Gamecube, but as I grew up the games became increasingly mediocre until the point where I had no desire to play them.

Project 8 was the first one that I noticed a decline in enjoyment in.. I liked the over-the-topness and just overall fun of the previous installments.

After Underground yea. It just lost it's charm i guess. Tired to do too much. But then again the series was pretty done by then anyhow. I cant tell u how many hours i have into 2, and 3.

About the time Skate came out, so...2007? Although they are doing an HD Arvade thing that's a mix of the first two Pro Skaters so that should be good.

It started to go downhill a little after American Wasteland, when they started to go for one-game-gimmicks, such as the Downhill Jam. Proving Grounds was good, very good actually, but since then they've pushed the Skateboard-Controller thing hard, but it works about as well as a power-drill underwater.

Gonna be a hipster on you folks and say that the Tony Hawk games were better ..Underground. Although, American Wasteland is still the gem of the series in my opinion. I think the skating genre hit it's downfall when it put too much effort in trying to push the whole 'motion-skate-board' -thing. To me, a game is much better when I get to control it using well, a controller. If I wanted to exercise I wouldn't be playing video games, I'd be exercising. Why incorporate a boring, exhausting activity into another that's supposed to be a form of entertainment? But who am I to say this isn't some uncanny valley yet to pull through. Maybe you young'uns with your robots and lazers and alternate dimensions are what the future of gaming is really about. Although I prefer to live in the present, and motion-controls should be a thing of the past.

I'unno, the only three games I've played in the series were 3, Wasteland and P8. I'd say that the series for me started to tank after the release of P8, but since Wasteland is right up there amongst my favourite games of all time, that just might be my bias speaking.
