So, when will Ps3/360 NOT be called Next-gen?

Ive been thinking about it. The 360 has been out for like, what, two years? The Ps3 has been just a little bit less. And yet, I still hear everyone refer to them as the "Next-gen" systems. My question is, where is the magical mark that "happens" and it switches to current gen? Is it an age? Or when games stopped being released for previous systems? I just dont get it. I think they should be current gen now! Your opinions?

It occurs to me that the moniker might actually be appropriate, because with the wii around we have a 'current gen' system with 'last gen' capabilities. Since we havn't let go of that era of graphics and hardware yet, we seem to yet have a reason to refer to the new generation as 'next'.

... strange times ...

I guess when the old generation of consoles stop being bought and used new. X-box has dissapeared now but the ps2 is still going.

but as shadow skill mentioned its just this current generations tagline. The PS4 and x-box 640 will probably be known as uber-gen or something

God i hate it. It is a good way to talk about grapics.
But other than that, its a way for reviewers to sound like they know what they are talking about.

Until all the last gen systems have died off. Come on PS2! There's nothing more you can do now! Everyones moved on so why don't you! Somebody needs to pull the plug.

Hay now, the best... some of the best... some of the pleasent days of my life were spent playing PS2, just because something bigger and shinier has come out doesn't mean you can write it off completely - there's fight in the old girl yet.

Yes. I do realise I just called an array of electronics an old girl.

I made a thread on this awhile ago. According to some people then its "next-gen" to sound more advanced and to sound like it has better graphics/games.

Yep, but I'd stay put and wait for the Ultra series to hit shelves.

I don't understand why people appear to stay awake all night thinking about this. I don't care what 'gen' a console is but this is the way I say it.

Usually people get dubbed a certain generation by the zeitgeist of the time period. Like the Hippie generation.

I refer most consoles to their current generation by the time period they're all released, say within a 3-5 year period.

This is fairly easy as most consoles get released within around a 2 year time window (maybe the Dreamcast being the acception, Sega always daring to go where other companies wouldn't).

Anyway, lets just play the games.

They dum down PS3 and 360 games for it. They turn out pretty crap. Have you played Spiderman 3 for ps2? Have you?! It WAS good, but everyone has moved onto the shiny and the new. It's time to let it go, drift away into the darkness like at the end of Titanic.

I agree that it's the tag for this generation. Everything looks so "real" and people buy into eye candy more than deep gameplay at least 50% of the time so the fact that everything has a physics engine now and can simulate water realistically so who cares if the entire game is about, lets say, jumping around rooftops; It will still win collision detection awards.

Gameplay is for the few games that have the math down and aren't testing waters and trying to do something new and original like "make the biggest world evar!!1" or "Customize the color of the grassez!!!" or whatever other crap no one else has ever done. /end rant

my way of looking at is that the PS3/360/Wii consoles have been released... so they aren't 'next generation' anymore, they are the current generation of consoles. so now we're all waiting for the new next generation consoles...what a fun thing that is >.>

I've always found that the next-gen bandwagon dies off when there's serious talk floating around about the next set of consoles.

Which should be rolling around sometime soon. The first of this generation was the DS released in 2004, four years ago. Of course they're STILL flying off shelves over the holidays, so Nintendo doesn't need to put out the DS' successor quite yet.

Fun thought: You don't hear anyone calling the DS or PSP a next gen system, do you?
