I got it and played up to the water part, was all hyped then watched some youtube videos where the stuff is made a joke of. Such as toying with the monsters and various parodies on the game and now I can't take it seriously anymore =\

I wish someone would get one of those memory wiping flash thingies from MIB and let me unsee what has been seen so I can play this great game and still be scared.

I finished it, although there was one part that I could only play about a minute per time. I kept pausing and doing something else and when I finally got up the courage to go play again, I could only play for about another 30 seconds.
The only thing that could've made Amnesia better is Amnesia itself, so I could play the game again and be horrified. The only sad thing is that once you've played it once, there's not a whole lot of replay value. Still, it's by far the scariest game I've ever played. It's actually a great contender for my best horror game, but Silent Hill 2 is still top. Although, as much as I love SH2, it never paralyzed me as much as Amnesia. I enjoy being paralyzed in fear by movies and games, it's just that Amnesia, Penumbra, and Silent Hill are the only ones that have succeeded.

I bought it and got about 20 minutes into the game before I shut the game off in terror. I didn't even see any enemies.

I didn't think anything could be more scary than System Shock 2...

so to get my moneys worth I watched an LP of it on youtube. Still scared me pretty good o_o

I've been wanting to buy it for a long time, but I'm waiting for this summer when I know I'll have large swafts of time to be paranoid of scary shit jumping at me in the real world.

I kinda did. I stopped playing just after you encounter those things. Then watched the remaining stuff through a LP online till the end. I couldn't finish it by playing it cause of the heart attacks it was giving me.

I finished it... maybe 2 months ago? I can't recall when exactly. The memory is too horrible.

Either way , I hope this lets you know how I feel about the game.

It scared me so much that I have trouble even listening to the intro music.

I finished it some time ago and replayed it a lot.

I didn't think it was that scary but I think that about anything. And the prison section wasn't the worst. I liked it though. It had more than "startle" scares which I loved. Among my top horror games if not the first.

Im curious as to why you go mad if you a. look at the creature and b.are in the dark

I would want to keep an eye on whatever was there and stay in the dark so it couldnt see me. The makers of this game think it would be safer standing in full light with your back to a monster?

It makes no sense and it annoys me :/
You do know how the human mind works yes? Assuming you are somewhat human yourself then you would know that EVERY human being is scared of the dark to an extent (unless incapable of feeling fear for whatever reason), and when confronting the jam dripping from the walls and the twisted monsters (if you ever get to look at them close enough, they are really fucked up creatures) I'm pretty sure you would shit your pants and cry for your mother if you were stuck in the dark not knowing what was in there with you. The darkness allows alot of room for imagination, because you cannot justify what is physically before you with a definite visual input, you can only assume the worst when being hunted by "things". All this is part of why madness ensues within the game, along with the mental integrity of the protagonist being rather different from ours.

I'm not trying to be douchey, believe me, my whole feeling was that I personally would feel safer trying to at least be some measure of stealthy. I think the other person who quoted me had it right that it is a way to make the player feel uncomfortable.

I'm not saying it's a bad game as it clearly isn't, but those things aren't something I would do in that situation. It just seems incredibly derpy. As you said the protagonist seems to be a beefburger short of a full barbecue so maybe that is why.

Also the jam coming out the walls kind of ruined the atmosphere for me. It felt like the end level of Tomb Raider :/. It would have been more subtle if they had just left it a mysterious castle.

I've only played the demo, haha. I really want to play the game, but it's seriously scary. The demo was enough to nearly give me a heart attack.

I apologise if my reply sounded a bit (or completely) over the top or insulting. After playing the game I can say that not observing the threat at hand did constantly frighten me. "Does it know I'm here? Is it coming to wrench out and feast upon my innards?". I agree with you that the protagonist being a pussy did put me off a bit, but I read reviews and kept with me the idea that I/ the protagonist was supposed to be some vulnerable and scared little boy looking for hope in a hopeless situation. That might help you bear with the strangeness that is insanity within the game. The jam growing around you is, I believe, to aid with the idea that something sinister and twisted is hunting you and lives within the castle/mansion, especially since it hurts you if you touch it.

I played it all the way through.

I felt the music kind of betrayed the inherent danger in most situations in a bad way. Once I learned the kind of music to listen for, it became a lot less scary because I knew what was coming.

This is probably going to sound really douchy but I think thats why it irritates me, the protagonist is a bigger wuss than I am. I always feel like I want to slap him and shout pull yourself together man. I'm a chick so he should feel bad.
I think you're forgetting it's a game. Just go with the flow, jeez.

I beat it twice. I enjoy being scared. The second time I played it to listen to the commentary, and that was far less scary overall.

Took me a month or two to complete. Generally, I could only play the game in 10-15 minute intervals. I'm not a wuss, but Amnesia was a GOTY and a gem for me because it got into my head and under my skin in ways that I have not experienced.

Horror is a funny thing and depends a lot on the individual: Amnesia was spot on for me :)
