So who else is tired of complaints about brown shooters?

Firstly I'd like to say that the last brown shooter I played was quake, and I don't really like brown shooters that much. That being said, like fucking clockwork, every single week, I see a complaint along the lines of "The industry is dead/has lost creativity because there's a lot of brown shooters coming out".

I have 2 problems with this complaint.

Problem 1. It's really ignorant. Look at the games coming up in the following months/years. Batman Arkham city, Saints Row The Third, Lollipop Chainsaw, NeverDead, Firefall, Once Upon A Monster, Mass Effect 3, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Serious Sam 3, and so on. Now, compare that list to this list. Modern Warfare 3, Ghost Recon, Battlefield 3, Gears of war 3.

So that's 8 original and/or non-shooter game franchises that are coming up, as opposed to the 4 brown shooter franchises getting another sequel, or in the case of gears 3, have already gotten one. Yeah, the original and colorful and/or non-shooter/shooter games outnumber the brown shooters by half, and that's just new releases, and I didn't even list EVERY original or non brown shooter/non-shooter release. Therefore, I can only conclude that these complaints come from people who only look at the industry for 5 minutes. Oh, here's another colorful and original shooter. Bioshock Infinite. Yeah. So don't bullshit me about how the whole industry is brown shooters, because it just plain goddamn is NOT.

Problem 2: It's really fucking repetitive.

I swear to god I read this complaint every other week. To be honest, what pushed me to write this was this topic right here http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.317641-Poll-Is-the-gaming-industry-losing-creativity .
Not only has it been probably the 100th damn time I've read the brown shooters complaint, but also the 50th time I've seen the "Gaming is dying" thing. People, come the fuck on. Hell, just browse gametrailers for a few minutes and you'll see that the industry is way more creative than you're giving it credit for. Oh sure, there's brown shooters and sports games. There's also sandbox games, fighting games, racing games, flying games, puzzle games, and many more.

So can you people please shut up about brown shooters? Yeah, they release quite often, but that doesn't mean EVERYONE is making one. It just means the people that are are making another sequel.

And I didn't even TALK about indie or flash games here, and just look at how diverse they are.

Some people just need a random pathetic excuse to hate on a game so yeah, I agree with you. I mean have some of these complainers seen the variety of environments in Bad Company 2, "a brown modern shooter" and Battlefield 3 looks like it'll up the ante.

I remember a preview for Metro: Last Light in the escapist after E3 that bashed the game for being brown and grey. I shit you not. I mean fuck the amazing depressing atmosphere, vastly improved stealth, jaw-dropping graphics and phenomenal lightning. It's brown and grey therefore it sucks... *sigh*

I for one haven't complained about brown shooters in YEARS. The palette for the modern shooter seems to be predominantly grey.

Well said OP. It's about time someone said it. Most of these people seem to be just regurgitating someone else's opinion in the first place.

I never get tired of complaints hurled at first person shooters.

Hey, if people are complaining, that might mean they're not buying. And if they're not buying, the industry might take it easy on making so many of them.

Please read problem 1 again. 4 brown shooter releases to 8 colorful shooter/non-shooter releases. Read the post before you answer.

I'm sure as hell are, I actually like those shooters. Whats worse as the OP mentioned is that many haters list them as brown shooters when in fact most of them have a verity of colors. It pisses me off so I decided to fight fire with fire and label the hater's games shit as well.

Might sound trollish but if they get to mock me for my gaming taste than I can sure as hell doing it back to them.
(You hear me indie game fanatics! You aint getting away being dickish towards shooter fans like me!)

She's saying she's not a fan of shooters in general, not just brown shooters. And the industry does seem to have a bit of crush on the shooter as a game play model, most particularly because it's so console friendly.

Do I need to drag XCOM into this? She has a point.

Well video games are finally migrating away from that stigmata, the problem now is if the game is varied and fun.

There are a lot of regular shooters, yes. But those weren't really what I was talking about. Even then, there is still some variation.

That's fair, it wasn't what you were specifically talking about. But that's life in a public forum. If the conversation hasn't strayed off topic by post #3 you've accomplished something astonishing.

And yes, there will always be "some variation", but the industry's fascination with taking everything and making it into a fucking shooter lately has been more than a little annoying. And I LIKE shooters.

Thank goodness I'm not the only one annoyed by this.

INB4: You're NEVER the only one.

People also seem to forget that the game industry has done this kind of thing before. Look back in the ninties when most games were action platformers. The fact there aren't much around anymore (besides Mario and other Nintendo characters) basically proves that the whole shooter craze isn't going to last forever.

Ever considered that maybe the real complaint is that so many shooters are brown? Let's look at your list, and adjust it to drop other genres.

NeverDead, Firefall, Serious Sam 3

Compared to:

Modern Warfare 3, Ghost Recon, Battlefield 3, Gears of war 3.

I suppose just to be charitable, I'll throw in Mass Effect 3, but only for half a point, so the ratio's more like 3.5:4. I'd also note that all three "not brown" shooters are third-person shooters. If a person's looking for a first person shooter, they're stuck with brown. Also the others are all unconcerned with "gritty realism" and since Real Is Brown [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RealIsBrown]...

Just some food for thought. I don't really have any interest at all in the entire bottom row. Hell I've never even played an entry in any of those series.

At times, they're perfectly valid. Unfortunately, band-wagon hating can be somewhat more common.

Look when Gears of war first came out I kept hearing stuff along the lines of "A revolution in gaming." When the inevitable happened and everyone and their dog started to make third person shooters with a wall-hugging cover system it wasn't cool anymore. Brown shooters will continue being made as long as people buy them. Considering Gears 3 made over 3 million dollars in its first week of sales and was well reviewed by just about everyone short of Yahtzee, who was one of the forerunners of the "I hate brown shooters" bandwagon, I don't think that will be any time soon.

I will now prepare to dodge the shoes that will be thrown at my head for this rant.

Complaining about games in general I have always found a little odd. If you don't like brown shooters, don't buy them. It's not like there is a shortage of games or anything.

I haven't played that many shooters: One (very short) round of Black Ops Zombies, Bad Company 2, Halo Reach, Modern Warfare 1. None of them, as I recall, were particularly brown...

Those complaints are more repetitive than the games they are about, and they're about games I LIKE!
