IDK I don't think square these days has the ability to remake FFVII, they're all flash and no substance. The game will look incredible for sure but the story and characters are going to suffer.
I agree. Final Fantasy 13 showed they just don't know how to write.
And Bravely Default showed just how out of touch they are and how unwilling to listen they are.
They keep citing turn based combat as old school or some such nonsense yet Bravely Default destroys their big titles in reviews and reception.

Really have no faith in the remake. At all.

I'm one of the sad minority of gamers who doesn't understand what all the love and hype for FF7 is but at the same time won't actually play it to find out.
And I love a good JRPG, too! The two localized Legend of Heroes games are taking up all of my gaming time quotas this month.

At least the sales of Bravely Default have convinced someone there to greenlight a sequel. It probably was just the money talking, so of course they would listen.

But, maybe the money will talk again if the sales of of the remake and FFXV aren't as much as they projected. (Though to be realistic here, both will probably sell well in Japan regardless of what happens internationally. The Japanese critics and gamers will buy up nearly anything with the Final Fantasy name. It wouldn't surprise me if FFXVI was a shooter with RPG elements and Famitsu gave in close to 40[their perfect score].)

Much of the hype and love for FFVII is nostalgia. It was the first JRPG (or even RPG in general) for many people in the west, and it was the game that really ignited westerners' interest in JRPGs. Those are the two biggest reasons it gets brought up so often compared to other titles in the franchise.

Besides the praise it gets from fans, the other reason a remake has been desired since the PS2 era is the graphics were extremely primitive. FFVI's sprites have aged better, and later PS1 FFs, while still aging quicker than sprite graphics, had more detail and realistic proportions to the character models, especially in the CGI cutscenes.

Although, if you can ever get over that block (I've got plenty of those with several games, myself.), it is a really good JRPG. The materia system alone offers a lot of experimentation. It has flaws, but so does the other fan-favorite FFs and other "greatest games ever."
