So why have people been clamoring for Beyond Good & Evil 2 all this time anyway?

I just finished playing the first game, and it wasn't really all that great. It wasn't terrible by any means, but I found it all kind of meh. The gameplay was all a bit janky and none of the mechanics were utilized all that well. The photographing mechanic in particular was disappointing for being such a major selling point. It was just kind of dull. You looked at a thing and pushed the button. There was no grading for quality of shot like Pokemon Snap, heck you couldn't even retake photos for reports if you botched the shot but still managed to get whatever it was in frame.

The story never really grabbed me either. It was full of characters that you never get to know. All those kids in the orphanage get, what, 2 lines of dialogue each? Forgive me for not feeling the attachment I was obviously supposed to be feeling for them. Peyj was really the only interesting character and the only one that got fleshed out at all. Pacing felt pretty off too. Like we weren't really accomplishing that much, but then it rushed to the end.

It kind of felt like they ran out of money about halfway through. There's 88 pearls in the game and you start by getting one at a time from story sequences, minigames, and sidequests. But then they start throwing them at you in groups of 3s and 5s and 7s and you've got 'em all before you know it. The animal sidequest feels the same way. Sometimes the scientist lady will say something interesting about the creature you've photographed, but most of the time it's just the generic "thanks Jade!" dialogue. I really think they should have given a short bio about each of the organisms, that would have made that quest a lot more rewarding, since you don't even need to do it at all really. All you get is money and pearls (5 in total) and there's 17 more pearls in the game than you need and I ended up with 40 grand in credits and nothing to spend it on. It's a pretty short game too, It only took me 12 hours and that was with doing everything.

I don't get why it's called "Beyond Good & Evil" either. It seemed like there was a pretty clear good/evil separation between the protagonists and antagonists. Wasn't really anything beyond that though.

So why have people been waiting 14 years for a sequel?

Honestly, and I hate to be 'that' guy, but the main hullabaloo was that Jade was a lady. That's about it. Whenever women as protagonists are brought up in a Top 5 or whatever Jade and Samus are neck-and-neck for most best.

I have no problem with Jade mind you. But I do believe it Jade was Jason, yeah no one would care about Beyond Good/Evil 2 for 14 years. It certainly wasn't the gameplay! I mean the best horror game ever, Silent Hill 3, was released in 2003 and where's the 14 year vigil for Heather?! I'd trade BGE2 for Silent Hills with Heather in a heartbeat!

Poor Heather...no one cared about her because Pyramid Head was in 2...

The game and world was fun, nice, pleasant. People who played and enjoyed it at the time wanted more. It's not rocket science.

It was a groovy, upbeat, colorful game with cool characters, catchy music, pretty versatile gameplay and a fun stick-it-to-the-man plot. No, I don't get the title either. But it was a charming, easygoing game is what I'm saying.

Plus, ended on a cliffhanger, right?

Those always work the first couple times.

Didn't every game since Froger end on a cliffhanger?
No? Sequel bait, maybe, but not an actual cliffhanger. And honestly, not even sequel bait usually.

Maybe I just got really lucky.

I guess it depends on the definition of sequel. My go is that unless every plot point has been 100% tied up, its a cliffhanger for a sequel. I guess I view cliffhanger and sequel bait as the same thing...
As far as I'm concerned every game since say...Conker's Bad Fur Day or Body Harvest has been a cliffhanger.

It was charming, fairly simple but fun, had a good changeup between action sequences and Metal Gear-equese sneaky bits(without all the drama) and ended on a cliffhanger.

And as much as I'd like to see what that cliffhanger was leading towards, it's fairly obvious at this point we're never going to get that game. I also don't have enough faith in Ubisoft to deliver another game of the same quality.

I didn't really get why that cliffhanger was a cliffhanger actually.

I mean, we saw Double H cured of that Domz parasite no big deal... Couldn't Peyj just get the same cure?

Eh, it was charming and fun.

I imagine it hasn't aged well though.

I lost interest in the sequel the exact fucking second I saw that they're trying to turn it into No Man's Sky of all fucking things.

That game never looked appealing to me. I never was intrigued even half as much as I'd need to be to try it out and I tend to be willing to try most things.

I hear people praising this game a lot but I never managed to hear something actually interesting amidst the praise so I guess it's just not my cup of tea.

The sequel from what I understand is coming out after the established image of why the game is good was solidified enough for the developers to be able to pander to those people who somehow actually liked the first game, which basically means I don't think I'll be interested enough in that one either.

As for the whole female protagonist angle, I don't get why this is the one game that's being praised so much when there's so many better examples. How about the Legend of heroes: trails in the sky series? Estelle is badass. How about Okami? You do know Amaterasu is a goddess, right? And she's even shaped as a wolf which is pretty hard to sexualize unless you're a furry or something. People should have been touting Okami as a game with a strong female hero who isn't tied down by societal feminine expectations and just does her thing through the body of a male wolf. Hell, she's technically trans-species and transgender too during her incarnation. This is even inclusive to the otherkin people.

I've always found the cries for a sequel rather odd as well. The game was a commercial failure and as far as I can tell none of the multiple re-releases has gotten much traction. I kind of suspect that it has more to do with the herd mentality of the gamer public in general leading to a lot of bandwagoning among people who have never actually even played the game.

I dunno, in any event I did play the game back in the day on the PS2 (got it for a couple of bucks out of a bargain bin at Toys R Us shortly after release) and thought it was concentrated meh. The story was heavy handed trope filled idiocy, the characters were cardboard meh, the gameplay pretty much never raised itself above serviceable and often didn't hit even that low bar, and the ending was David Cagian levels of batshit crazy.

I don?t get it either. A friend of mine sold me on BG&E like it was the greatest thing since sex on sliced bread, so I bought it a couple years ago on Xbox Live and was entirely underwhelmed. I?m sure it?s largely due to its age; at its time, it probably was decent when compared to other things on offer, but as of a couple years ago, it just felt like a disjointed, uninteresting amalgamation of paper-thin gimmicks. So much so, I can?t for the life of me remember any of it specifically; it was just? meh. But for the sake of its cult following, I hope the sequel holds up and that the rose-colored nostalgia glasses don?t fall off.

I still play Beyond Good & Evil once every year. On PC.
It's a fun game with different parts that comes together well enough to elevate it above it's rail-roaded story.
Good music, finding and photographing animals, pearls, the humor/story/atmosphere, the racing and cruising around the hubworld.
Some things could be a bit more polished or fleshed out, but nothing really soured the game and if they had used that as a basis for the sequel it could have gone a lot further.

I don't have a lot of hopes about BG&E2 but I'll keep one eye open and see if it might surprise me.

It has a certain easygoing charm to it. A look and feel that appeals to me and many others, but that I find hard to describe beyond that its sort of like playing a Franco-Belgian bande dessinee. Just a simple little game about fun characters taking on the man. That said, I understand why someone playing it now would not be impressed. It's not the most polished game, even for its time.

Except the soundtrack. Just mentioning the game makes that tune that plays in the bar nestle right back into my brain.

I think people refer to the fact that Jade was apparently an Alien all along but didn't know it. And it's never actually explained what was going on there.

And we'll never know exactly what that was supposed to be about.

Beyond Good and Evil I was never a fan of. I hope the sequel does fine, yet I'm more worried that Ubisoft is going to screw it up somehow. I am already starting to feel bad for the fans.

I'm sure there will be plenty of towers to climb and online-only "features" that require Uplay to be running to access.

Unless Ubisoft lets some of their more creative folks run with it like with Valient Hearts and then you might get something good, rather then just keeping making THE UBISOFT GAME.

Huh. I don't know if I'd really consider that a cliffhanger since the game never really presents that aspect as unresolved. It's unexplained, yeah, but it's pretty well been resolved.
