Back in the ps1 days, everyone was raving about a little game at the time known as Loaded, now I never got to have a good go of Loaded, I played it a bit in friends house, and thought it looked awesome, but it seemed everyone in the school yard was enjoying it but me. As it turns out the next in the series just came out, Re-Loaded, and me wanted to be the coolest kid on the playground decided to get it straight away, and because like Loaded was so great, how can Re-Loaded be anything but awesome. Imagine how disappointed I was when the game turned out to be horse shit.

To give you a slightly more up to date example. All your friends buy Modern Warfare 2, and you buy Call Of Duty 3.

So I ask you this Escapist. How many times have you thought you were buying the bestest game ever because of the franchises legacy and bought the worst one of the series.

Timesplitters 2, knowing how awesome Future Perfect is.

No, I was mistaken... the game a below mediocre game for me. Still, nice gun library and co-op modes.

Wouldn't the better example be that they bought CoD 2 and you buy CoD 3? (CoD 2 is highly regarded as the best in the series for most)

I guess I've never really bought a game without any research, I can only think of one game I bought but it was at a discount bin for about 5 bucks and I thought it was something else,

kane's wrath or legacy or something, it sucked was basically all it turned out to be

but yeah morale of the story kids, do your research or you'll end up like Sronpop lonely, bitter and upset

Resident Evil Zero Hour for the Gamecube. I eventually played RE5 though which I did love.

That's exactly what happened to me. Call of Duty 2 is still to this day my favorite FPS of all time, and because of how much I loved it I pre-ordered Call of Duty 3 (it's the only game I've ever pre-ordered), and was the most disappointed I've ever been in my life.

Really? I loved TS2 and rate it only slightly below the 3rd. IMO it had better multiplayer modes and I loved how the story mode changed based on difficulty setting so it had a lot of replayability. It lacked the strong, funny story from the 3rd, but it was an awesome game.

Hey those were Pre-internet days, we didn't even have Dial-up. There was no way I could have known how bad Re-loaded was going to be :p It still happens to this day. Just ask all the people who pre-ordered Too Human(sick burn).

Games were bought purely on hype for me back in those days. But no longer, I will not be burned again.

Dante's Inferno on the PSP.

Knowing that graphically and content wise it'd be lacking compared to it's PS3/360 counterpart.

Devil May Cry 2.

I actually fell asleep during a boss fight with some giant moth. Damn thing kept flying away and I had to spend about an hour shooting it with my crappy pop guns.

Mass Effect 1. I thought it'd be as awesome as ME2 (which I have played though), but unfortunately it seems to be a truly terrible port from a console (or it's just pretty badly designed/optimized) and the combat just feels completely horrible in comparison to ME2.

Umm... what? You're kidding, right? I've never heard anyone call COD2 the best.

Shadow the Hedghog. Thankfully, I didn't get the WORST of the series, just 2nd worst.
Other than that, I've been pretty lucky, avoiding the black sheep of franshises.

off of dev, rather than series, but I bought Haven: call of the king because it was made by midway, makers of Dr. Muto.

holy mother of shit, Haven: call of the king is flat-out awful game. playig is an insult to your intelligence.

also, this is way there needs to be a daikatana 2: make it a masterpiece, and then people will be like "hmm... I wonder if the first was good?"

it would be teh lulz.

CoD 2 was the best in the series.

In regards to the topic, Splinter Cell: Conviction is regarded by some to be the worst in the franchise. Really, it depends on how you view the franchise as a whole, as Conviction is my favorite 360 game at the moment.

Look, I don't even particularly love COD4, but I still say it's the best of the bunch. Just saying.
