A few weeks ago we (my family) had an shelving unit out on the curb, for free. Not three hours after we put it out there; a group of stereotypical, backwards-hat skateboarders went past, turned around, came back up the hill, and smashed it. Apparently these "little shits", as they were dubbed, thought that they could get a good laugh out of destroying something that could have been easily recycled into society. Whenever I hear something like this, it causes me to question, not just the society that allowed these people to do this, but the reason as to why they would want to do this in the first place.

I get some consolation in the fact that they will never achieve anything with this mindset, but this event does serve to fuel my dislike for capitalism. Not the freedom it allows but the way in which these freedoms are secured, and the ignorance it creates as a byproduct. If you disagree I (strongly) encourage you to watch MAXED OUT or Who Killed The Electric Car. These are examples of what I hate about capitalism.

In short, have you ever witnessed or experienced something that made you question the society you live in? If so, please, share your thoughts.

It's not, I'm just ranting about things I don't like with society, and attributing them to capitalism and/or capitalist values.

That makes very little sense to me. You don't like things, so you blame them on capitalism/capitalistic values?

No. I'm struggling to understand the motives of these people, and simply using my dislike for elements of capitalism as an outlet. I agree that it makes no real sense whatsoever, all my posts turn out like this, but I'm surprised that you didn't immediately attack my position, which is what usually happens. *depressed sigh*

*There was a sentence here that I didn't think was totally necessary. Pure snark, no substance, and I don't want a debate to become an argument*

Are you going into politics? Have you spent the time, dare I say, coming up with a solution? Or do you just want to talk about it, and have other like minded individual's pat you on the back?

And before you go into some detailed essay on how the world could work for you, don't. I've heard every diatribe, lecture and soap box rant on this subject, and hell, have made a few myself. The fact is, that unless you can prove, with reasonable unbiased results(like actually doing something) that you indeed do have the right mindset, I, and the rest of us who are sick of high and mighty individuals like yourself, aren't listening. We are however, becoming less and less keen on your idea's, and alot less willing to adopt them in the end. Know your audience.

And after all that, I really don't want to put you down. It's just when you come onto a message board with your own "this is why the world sucks" mentality, you gotta expect some rebuttal. This isn't me starting a flame war, and I'm more than open to some healthy dialogue. I really just don't buy into the whole "capitalism is the world's evil *****" ideal.

You're right. I'm not trying to win votes or change minds, and I'm not trying to defect, deflect or otherwise avoid the truth. I just never seem to tell people what I'm really thinking, and it irritates me just as much as I just did you. Thank you for pointing this out. I really do thank you.

Oh no you di'nt.

I hate my rowdy children as much, if not more, than the next guy, but I feel you have misplaced the blame in your zeal. It seems that the motive for the little bastards was more due to the fact that it's fun to smash things. You've also got to admit that the average teen doesn't really care whether or not your shelves are used to build hurricane shelters for starving Haitians. If it's there, and not in use, then why not get a few giggles out of smashing it, the thing's probably going to end up in a landfill anyways.

Is is woefully inefficient? Yes. Does it really compare to the amount of waste our society normally generates just by flailing about? No, it doesn't.

Yes, we all hate the bloody moronic fools who go around breaking stuff because they're "bored". That is, of course, a lie because if you give them something productive or interesting to do they'll just ditch it to go drink, smoke and break stuff.

In England/Ireland, we have chavs rather than skaters, so we have to put up with the worlds most irritating accents. In Ireland, you get a heavily forced Irish accent that's slurred to the point of being almost impossible to understand. In England, you get the "innit" accent, which everyone knows. If you don't, it sounds similar to someone attempting a Jamaican accent, only with heavy British influence. And by British, I don't mean the posh one all Americans think of. They also, both British and Irish, seem to have forgotten that "th" exists and have replaced it with "v"s. It's annoying, trust me.

WHAT JUST HAPPENED? I've never seen that outcome in any internet forum, it's usually just goes into an unwanted flame war while the rest of the thread readers laugh.

capitalism is what makes you have a computer in a first place

come to my city (cracow, poland) and visit nowa huta, which is a communist built physical workers district, after dusk. i wonder if you could survive an hour without beign robbed/beaten/injured

or keep crying bout skater boys
You, my friend, have never been mugged by a fully grown chav. They all carry knives and travel in groups, because they're all pussys when not armed and surrounded by friends.

Well, as its benign, I don't think I'd mind too much. Though a benign beating sounds paradoxically fascinating.

p.s.- benign has 2 'n's

Calm down, turn off the monitor, lay down on the floor, and try to fall asleep. I suggest counting the number of rotations your ceiling fan is performing. You should wake up in about an hour and this whole thing will seem like a bad dream. Repeat for as many times as you see this post.

I hope balance is soon restored to the internet. These agreements make me all whoozy.

Meh, so capitalism builds factories where computers are made? give me a break. Capitalism is an economic system like any other. So, now, if suddenly the world turned to hardcore marxist communism PC's would suddenly disappear?

You got your cables crossed in there.

Having BEEN one of those goods-smashing punks, I'll tell you that the desire to be a destructive little shit is older than dirt and such an integral part of the mind of man that to remove it would also remove one of the things that makes us viable. The mindless defiance today is what gets this world changing tomorrow. The world has enough peaceful herbivores, and I don't want our species to join them.

What you say makes absolutely no sense. Entires schools of thought have been born to explain what exactly is it that makes humankind viable, and you suddenly come out with defining "mindless defiance" as the thing that pushes us forward? Overcoming mindless defiance is why we're not extinct, 'cuz our ancestors knew when to run.

Being a stupid little shit is just that, being a stupid little shit. To top it all off, that behaviour is understood already in stupid teenagers who are male for the most part.

P.S: We're all herbivores already.
