They're not admitting anything, they're trying to be 'ard because they think people will think they're cool (like the OP says).

The guys who say it are probably weedy little nerds.
Possibly.
Actually, even probably the majority are just saying it to make themselves look interesting.

Which is kind of a waste of time - it's like writing a book.
Show, don't tell.

You can say you're interesting until the Sun burns out, but if that's all you say, you're kind of making a liar out of yourself, aren't you.

Also Max.
Why is everything always my fault?

I wasn't even in Germany in 1939.
We need a scapegoat, you just happen to be the best looking one.

Actually, I think it would make a person cooler if they were emotionless without an excuse for being so.

Also, the internet attracts odd folks.
When did you hear about furries before the internet came to be?

Not terribly often, I'd imagine.
Furthermore, the internet is relatively anonymous - people probably feel more comfortable admitting to that kind of thing here than they do in real life.

Saying "I sometimes get the urge to kill folk" is a really great way to lose friends about the office.
Well I would say your Certainly helping things.

The thread title pretty much nails it. Sociopathy (seems like the Firefox spellchecker doesn't like this word) is apparently cool these days. I don't pay much credit to all the would-be sociopaths out there, much like I disbelieve most of the other things said by the faceless masses of the Internet.

I've learned from experience how easy it is to misrepresent yourself when you are presented with a relatively anonymous medium and no real consequences. I also know you can start believing in it yourself after a while.

Judging by some of the responses I don't think everyone understand what a socio-path is. It has nothing to do with misanthropy and hating people, it's to do with not having the ability to understand human emotions. As well as having a complete lack of empathy and compassion.

Well, anything to be part of the counterculture.

I can tell you where the trend started on The Escapist, but I'm not going to.
I assume you mean Max.

To be honest it isn't any particular persons fault, it's just the weak minded people who follow others to be "cool". The same way it isn't the talentless morons such as Paris Hilton that are the issue with celebrity culture, but the tools who made them famous by worshipping them in the first place. I mean, if someone could be a billionaire for no good reason, then it would be insane not to, if people don't like it then they should blame the sheep who made it possible.

I'm not really an active member of The Escapists but yeah, I just like to lurk around and stuff. So, lately I've noticed people "brag" about being a sociopath (ie emotionally numb) or fantasies of killing people, anyone else notice this? I mean wth guys, when did it become cool to be a sociopath?

Obviously there's bound to be an actual sociopath around with this much members, but half the time I see someone claim such a thing I get the feeling it's bs.

I think I blame Dexter.
I dunno, if anything I'm too emotional, I don't try and hide that but to be frank I always try and rationalize it and work things through logic. (since you seem to be laying the blame on shows I guess mine would have to be house then, though I've just recently started watching Dexter so hmmm... Lets see what develops)

Sociopathy = Instant Edginess. It's as simple as that. Except it isn't really, of course, because, like misanthropy, it's now become a bandwagon for angsty teenagers. If you really were an emotionally devoid husk of a person you wouldn't be spending your free time posting about your favourite game/movie/biscuit on the Escapist, and it seems unlikely that you would be able to come up with witty remarks on the side.

Then again, you didn't claim to be a sociopath did you Kuro? I've always thought of House as more of an Aspergers, even though they rebuked that in the show (totally lame). He fits pretty much every aspect of the disorder but the producers felt they didn't want to give him a weakness or reduce his cool because it wouldn't fit his image (that's my bet anyhoo). Psychopathy seems fitting as well, however the show doesn't focus around any of his "sociopath"-characteristics.

I'm not a sociopath, but sometimes when I'm in the correct position and someone has their back to me or something, a voice inside my head tells me the best way to kill them.

I am not proud of this, but anonymity allows me to say this without fear.

Well, sociopathy implies mental instability. Mental instability is quite common in great artists. Contemporary (young) artists who are highly respected score with chicks and get mad respect. Therefore, we can follow this train of tard logic to conclude that sociopaths get chicks and mad respect.

Word.

I suspect everyone has that, but you did sort of prove my point.

The amount of people who will say they suffer from (Aspergers, Asexuality, Antisocial Personality Disorder, whatever) just to be cool definitely rises, but the people who actually suffer from (whatever) are much more willing to admit it in a place where it really can't be tracked back to them without a fair amount of effort.
I actually have bipolar disorder. Not saying that to be cool. Also, though being heterosexual I would much prefer asexuality; I just find the whole romance thing to be overrated and troublesome.

I don't get what's cool about Aspergers. It seems more likely those people just use it as an excuse for not being where they want to be in life. It's easy to fall back on a disorder. Coincidentally I'm actually diagnosed with Aspergers (for real), I still haven't totally accepted my diagnosis yet, because it just doesn't fit me for a big part. On some stuff my diagnosis has allowed me to hide behind my supposed Aspergers to not do stuff I was supposed to be doing.

Maybe another thing contributing is how autism/aspergers are often overdiagnosed. If your psych says you've got any disorder you will believe that up front and start to act after it, start to get insecurities where you'd otherwise had none.

Edit: lol what a bunch of fucked up personalities we are.

I've actually been in a relationship with a bipolar girl. It wasn't fun, though she was a very, very fucked up example. Always using sex to manipulate me, she wasn't capable of real intimacy, say small one wrong thing and she'd make a huge fuss about it.

On the positive side, I lost my virginity XD.

EDIT: I confused bipolar with borderline, my bad.

I've read somewhere that sociopathy isn't actually all that uncommon - the statistic is more like, 1 in 25 people are sociopaths. So there's probably a little bit of bullshit involved due to pop culture (I mean, even in real life, all my guy friends brag about being heartless douches even though they're actually rather soft), but on the whole I'm not surprised.
