Definitely Bacanno.
The best anime I've seen since Cowboy Bebop; it has a brilliant cast of characters, and interweaves about 5 or 6 stories really well, all in the course of just 1 season.

Plus the intro song is amazing
I'm sold! I haven't watched any anime in about a year now. Looking back, I find most anime to be highly immature, especially the ones that think being adult involves increasing the gore and disrupting the serious tone with gratuitous fan service (I'm looking at you, Elfen Lied). It is hard finding a mature one. Monster was the last great one I watched.
Yeah, there's no fan service at all in Bacanno, it's just a great story.
It is pretty violent, but considering a lot of it has to do with mafia families in the thirties, it's definitely not out of place or anything.

I'm always glad to sell more people on it, not enough people have seen it!

Oh dear.

Nobody has even mentioned Claymore...

I am dissapoint.
I'd have mentioned it, except it's really hard to recommend more than one anime at a time I find, or no one listens.

Claymore is fucking awesome though, and that whole arc with teresa was some the best anime I've ever seen.

FOOLYCOOLY!! [FLCL] I'm three episodes in and it's... it is amazing. A constant barrage of humor, awesome animation, wonderful music, lovable characters and a symbolic and interesting story that has me thinking. I truly love it.

It has been said before, but watch Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt. It's another hilarious show with a great soundtrack, wonderful animation reminiscent of classic Western Saturday morning cartoons and is just plain fun. It you want to sit down, relax and enjoy some over the top humour, countless sexual innuendos and constant asskickings, check it out.

OREIMO! A show about a seventeen year old guy who finds out his 14 year old sister is an eroge obsessed otaku. I was genuinely surprised by this anime. It's incredibly funny and has touching moments if you are a sibling.

Cencoroll. A short film that is incredibly unique. All written, designed and animated by one guy. I can't really explain it, but check it out, it rocks! You won't see anything else like it!

Serial Experiments Lain. A great thinking anime which had me in a trance the entire time I watched it. Some very interesting questions are asked in this anime, which hold true to reality.

Urusei Yatsura. I have only watched four episodes of this retro anime, but it is quite enjoyable. A young man named Ataru who only wants to be lazy, relaxed and chasing women, finally found love in a girl named Shinobu. Unfortunately for him, he accidentally has an alien named Lum convinced she is to marry him! Sounds like a common anime plot, right? Maybe now, but this show was made in the seventies. And it's great! It's funny, has lovable characters and influential characters, and has that great retro anime stylings common of the era.

GINTAMA!! I have never heard mention of GinTama on this site! It's a fantastic show! Quality humour, right there. A lazy, JUMP reading sweet loving samurai named Gin, living with a younger honest glasses wearing samurai and an incredibly powerful young girl in Chinese clothing of the Yato clan, who's umbrella can shoot bullets. One of the most enjoyable shows I have ever seen in the comedy department. Quality jokes, incredible voice acting, and countless breakings of the fourth wall.

I just finished this one, and would NOT recommend it. It has a few cool episodes at the start, and then pretty much forgets what 'plot' or 'storyline' means. It ends in a classic anime WTF.

You might like paranoia agent. I can't remember if it has any gory scenes since I haven't seen it in a long time, but it is thirteen episodes long. I think I remember it being a bit depressing as well.

Elven Lied is pretty good.

Except is really gory and has some nudity
gory like organs, bones, chunks, brains, semidigested food or like lots of blood?

and nudity like a nipple every other episode or like male an female genitals on display as often as they can work it into the situation? (no pun intended :D)

Ill just reccomend my top 5 and be on my way.

Full Metal Alchemist:Brotherhood; 64 episodes Great anime, lots of action, humor, a bit of a romantic plot(its there but barely)

Darker than Black; 25 episodes in the first season, 4 OVA's and 12 episodes in the second season. Fucking Awesome. If you like the idea of Logical thinking, this has some of it for you.

Full Metal Panic; 24 1st season, 12 second season, 13 3rd season JESUS CHRIST MECHS AND ACTION AND SCHEMING AND LOVE PLOT AND HUMOR VBLBJFHKLJOHLVLVNJD-

*ahem* moving on.

Toradora; A high school comedy/romance with great characters and visuals. Plus a couple fight scenes.

Angel Beats; Now I just finished this 13 episode anime recently. Its just...wow. I abosolutely loved it. It talks about resolve and redemption with death andl iving the life you wish, hidden under the veil of an action/comedy anime. Plus it has great music; no. amazing music. Watch it.

I hate naruto, bleach, one piece and crap like that.

Hello to everyone. Let me just start by saying I don't watch a whole lot of anime, so it is fairly hard to try and stay focussed on shows like Bleach when i just start watching them and they have 230+ episodes.

Now to the main point. I am looking for a good anime to watch, and I mean like defining the genre good. One that will actually keep me entertained and will make me want to watch it for a long time. I have seen a few anime, I watched Elfen Lied (really good) Dragon Ball Z, Bleach and Naruto, one time I did try to watch Cowboy bebop but I had to go somewhere and I never got around to watching it again. The one I particularly liked out of that list was Elfen Lied, primarily because it wasn't (and I know you're all sick of the stereotype) Ninjas and Samurai's running around with messed up hair with weapons that look like they could skin a crocodile. Elfen Lied had a depressing ending and few episodes, I think that is why i enjoyed it so much.

So Escapist what are some other good anime shows. I'm looking for a preferably short (although I won't care to much if it isn't ) good anime with some gorish scenes and preferably a depressingly theme about it. Also if this may effect your judgement I like it when there are big monsters in movies, machines and space.

The Anime doesn't have to follow those guide lines, they're just what I prefer, if you can't think of anything similar to that then just tell me your favorite anime, why it is and if I might like it.
My two best suggestions for you are: Buso Renkin(26 episodes, adn i would say defining the genre good) and Full Metal Alchemist(51 episoded plus a movie, also defining the genre good) You might also want to try FMA Brotherhood, but I haven't seen much of it yet so I can't tell you whether or not it's good. Seems good, and i suspect it will continue to be good, but you can never be sure.
Code geass is also amazing, maybe better than these, and it's defining the genre good, non-steryotypical(the others are less steryeotypical but there are some cliches) and relatively short. However, i think it's probably close to 60 episodes in total, I don't know what your cut-off is for long.

I take your Baccano! recommendation and raise you a Durarara!!. Same creator as Baccano! (even has some cameos), same sort of non-linear way-out-of-the-box storytelling. If you enjoy Baccano!, there is no way you won't love DRRR!! For OP specifically, it's short , full of action that isn't samurai (though a sword is featured eventually), very dramatic, with insanely entertaining plot twists.

And for something really unusual, I highly recommend Eden of the East. It's a very strange little series, and is really one of the best series I've seen in a long time. It's almost slice-of-life, until things start exploding and conspiracies get involved. It's really really good.
