My older brother came home 11 days ago and we both are annoyed that I dont have any co-op games that we can both play together. So instead of taking a gamble as I usually do when purchasing games, I would rather ask the escapist, what are some good co-op games out there?

EDIT: Forgot to mention consoles. I got a Playstation 3, and my brother got an Xbox 360 from a friend

What sort of game are you looking for? There're tons of co-op games from all kinds of genres. In what price range? Online or hot seat? On which platform?

Resident Evil 5
LittleBigPlanet
Dynasty Warriors (or any Warriors game)
I don't know if Dead Island can do local co-op
I think the Halo games have co-op that's not just a watered down mini-campaign.

I really enjoyed Borderlands Co-op, if you don't mind split screen, and the game is dirt cheap these days.

Gears of War series
Halo series
Portal 2

The platform and genre is pretty important, there's a lot of co-op games out there but it's hard to recommend without knowing what you're looking for.

For the Xbox 360:

N+. Simple, yet incredibly fun 2D platformer.
Halo-Any of them. Co-Op Campaign is fun too.
Castle Crashers. 2D hack 'n' slash with heaps of replayability.

For some good, stupid fun, you should try blood on the sand

You should post your platform of choice. Some really good games are exclusives.

For Xbox I would say the Halo games - Any of them.
Army of Two isn't my kind of game but it was pretty much made for co-operative play.

If you've got an Xbox then another vote for the Gears games, they're a blast in co-op (either online or split-screen. Gears 3 was the best for co-op, imho.

If you're on a PS3, Little Big Planet (either one or two) is a blast with a friend or three.

With either system, I'd second the vote for Borderlands - particularly if you like a little more rpg style advancement.

Noted: All of these games share the same screen

Ratchet: Deadlocked (Or Gladiator depending on region) (PS2) -A fun, little TPS platformer with weapon leveling. Funny as hell, too.

Destroy All Humans 2! (PS2, Xbox, 360?) -Freeroam TPS about smart-ass aliens stopping Russians from wiping out their existence. Nothing strange about that.

Portal 2 (360, PS3) -First person puzzle solver with it's own co-op campaign. Challenge rooms have been added as free DLC

Little Big Planet (PS3) -Looking for something creative and cutesy? You can never go wrong with LBP. Create levels and such using the tools provided. Or play someone else's great creation.

Borderlands (360, PS3) -Think Diablo with guns. Lots of guns.

Star Wars: Battlefront 2 (Xbox, PS2, PC) -Re-enact historic Star Wars battles with great action and over powered Jedis.

Gears of War (360) -Not really my cup of tea, but a third person shooter with cover mechanics refined to the bone.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game (Digital Download: 360, PS3) -A Beat em' up following in the footsteps of Streets of Rage and many other great arcade games. There's also a soundtrack by Anamaguchi, renowned chip-tune rock group.

Minecraft (Digital Download: 360) -It's a lego simulator with monsters. Need I say more?
Warning: If you want to play split-screen, you must have an HDTV and an HDMI cord.

Team Fortress 2 (PC *Free to Play*) -Team based objective shooter with great character and gameplay.

There. I listed something for EVERY platform.

Go have fun noaw.

Laura Croft: Guardian of Light is pretty damn fun co-op. Over the head platformer/shooter thing where co-op is really important.

Dungeon Defenders is a fun little game too, sort of 3rd person tower defense/hack and slasher deal.

Personally I have been playing a lot of Renegade Ops lately on Steam.

The best place I've found for suggestions is cooptimus.com or something like that. It lists games by genre and the type of multiplayer available in it. My friend and I keep trying things on the list and so far it has provided lots of interesting ideas.

Call of Duty Black Ops and Modern Warfare 3 have incredibly fun co-op in their zombies and survival modes. Borderlands is great fun, a game like Soul Calibur could also be good if you're both into fighting games

I think the Halo games have co-op that's not just a watered down mini-campaign.
It's actually the entire campaign. The AI actually change their tactics and there's more enemies in Reach.
(EDIT: Herp-flerp-a-derp: I re read what you wrote and you said not a watered down version of the campaign. Well I've made a fool of my self.)

OT:
Go to cooptimus.com

Gears of War Series;
Halo Series;
Army of TWO and Army of TWO: the 40th Day;
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1&2 (People will argue over which is best);
Left 4 Dead 1&2;
Sports games (MBL the show for baseball, NFL xx where x is the year for NFL, NBA2Kx for basketball, Forza 4 or Gran Turismo 4 for racing, and FIFA xx for Association Football.);
LEGO games (Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, Indiana Jones, Batman 1&2, Star Wars);
Dynasty Warriors series;
The Legend of Aang: Avatar the Burning Earth (also the easiest 1000 gamer score in the galaxy if that's something you care about);
Hero series or Rock Band series: (DJ Hero, Guitar Hero etc.);
Borderlands;
Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure.

More if you tell me what you like and I can think of any.

EDIT: Portal 2, Castle Crashers, Scott Pilgrim vs the World.
