Because the steam summer sale is going on, I decided I would get into steam and download some old favourites while they were so damn cheap. I reformatted an older PC I have so that it had sufficiant RAM and all that the play the ones I wanted (The newest of the games came out in 2005, they aren't exactly a strain on most PC's) and signed up. But then when I went to install the games, I ran into a problem. I don't have enough hard drive space for the games (Only 188 MB left). I didn't figure it would be a problem because I have a 1TB external hard drive and I've run games off of it in the past but steam won't let me install the games because it isn't recognizing the external hard drive and is saying that I only have that 188 MB left.

Basically, I need to know if I can run steam games off an external hard drive by downloading them straight to an external hard drive, and if I can how this would be done. If anyone knows I would greatly appreciate the help, I really want to play me some Vice City =) Thanks

PS, sorry if there are any bad errors, I've been awake for more than 36 hours now so some typos might be slipping through my sleep deprived brain's perception.

If steam isn't installed on your external hard drive then I dont think its possible. Steam will automatically put all its downloaded/installed files /steamapps and there is not setting to change this, since this is where it will always go to when you run a game.

If steam is installed on your external hard drive then it may be a formatting problem, or its a bug, in which case I don't really know a solution.

You can't run download games to a different drive than the one Steam is on, they get put in the steamapps folder. Pretty sure you can then move them after download, though.
