As most of you know he person who made Google Hasn't had to work in... well forever now. and i can only think of a few websites that can compete with what money he makes. and what I'm trying to say is if you could make a website that could compete with the money Google makes(if you had the resources). What would it be. I cant honestly think of any

It would be difficult - a website you use to look for other websites? I don't know if there would be anything.

What amazes me is how iconic Google has become in such a short time. Remember a decade ago, when there were hundreds of competing search engines, and you'd try several of them for different results? Nowadays we don't even say that we're going to search for something - we say we're going to Google it!

It's gone from just another search engine to an entirely dominant company whose name is now synonymous with the act of searching. It makes Microsoft's attempts to launch Bing seem laughable, because there is simply no point in putting another search engine out there anymore. It reminds me of all these developer's launching new MMOs to compete against WoW - they must know that they'll never be able to compete at the highest levels, so one wonders why they bother to try.

Because even if they don't take over completely, they can still make money. Despite WoW having such a large number of players, there are still plenty of people willing to play MMOs who avoid WoW for whatever reason.

Because competition is good? Even if a competitor doesn't knock the established market leader off its perch we need a healthy market in which competitors freely try to take on whoever is on top. When no one is trying to knock you off the top of the hill there is no drive to innovate and progress.

When people stop trying that's when evolution stops;
Progress goes hand in hand with trial 'n' error.
I disagree. In the IT world, if it stagnates, someone will take over. That's why Facebook and Google keep on coming out with new stuff. Staying ahead of the curve.

I like what this guy's saying.

OT: I'd make a site where you could order bacon online. It would take large setup fees to put a bacon kitchen in every city, but it'd pay off for sure

That's exactly my point, if no one tries, then no one will be able take over if the leading companies stop caring. Our western society is based around this fact. It's called capitalism, and that means competition.

What SonicWaffle implies is that that monopolized market should stay monopolized, thus eliminating the rule of competition, thus eliminating progress.

It's all about economics, really.

Microsoft's had quite a bit of success trying to crack open seemingly closed and dominated markets in the past decade. The Xbox and Zune have managed to carve out respectable market shares despite the ungodly popularity of the Playstation and iPod brands.

Plus some WoW competitors do make money, like The Lord of the Rings Online and City of Heroes/Villains.

Capitalism works best when there's competition.

Granted, but I'm not talking about the games which are simply released with the aim of making money. I'm talking about the MMOs that are hyped as serious competitors to WoW, and then never manage to pull it off.

Actually, no. I was pointing out that attempting to take an inferior product (Bing) and place it in direct competition with a product which dominates the market not through lack of competition but through being a genuinely better product (Google) is a mug's game. It seems like a waste on Microsoft's part, because Google these days practically defines the idea of searching. See my point about using 'to Google' when one means 'to search'. It's so deeply ingrained, I just don't see Bing having any real, lasting effect, especially since it's kind of crappy and less effective than the market leader.

I don't disagree that competition is good. What I disagree with is that in the case of Bing vs Google, as in the case of WoW vs practically any other MMO, there isn't really much competition. People stick with what they know, especially if what they know has proven to do the job better than any competing product, and to steal a large share of that market a new competing product is going to have to either do things better, or do things in new and interesting ways.
