Well hello there.

To start with I should explain that I'm a trained hypnotist, and I'm hoping to become certified to practice hypnotherapy within the next few years.

Now, hypnosis really is an amazing thing, whether you believe in it or not, but when you say 'hypnosis' a lot of people are stuck with the image of a bearded man swinging a pocket watch, or people acting like chickens (almost every time I tell people that I'm a hypnotist they ask if I have a pendulum or if I can turn them into a chicken. It's quite irritating.)

So, I was wondering, fellow Escapists, do you have any questions or anything you'd like to know about hypnosis? Because I'm happy to answer.

Would you kindly tell me whether or not a person can command others through the use of a word or phrase.

Well if you had perfect control over a brain, you could make it think anything was happening to it. What would you say the precise limits of your abilities are?

You should join reddit. They have a thing called IMAMA(I hope that's how it goes...)- I'm a [trained hypnotist] ask me anything.

Not that I'm complaining. I don't really do reddit, but this sounds interesting.

OT:

I'm wondering what are the myths. and how does it really look like? What can you make people do? And how long does it take to learn hypnotism? And how much mana does it drain to make someone attack someone of his own faction?

How do you train to be a hypnotist? How much practise does it take before you can...say perform hypnosis as a party trick?

how does it work?
Simply put, hypnosis is a naturally occuring state in the human mind. Ever found yourself looking for your toothbrush or phone and then found it right in your hand? That's a form of natural hypnosis.

The actual act of hypnosis involves what's called an induction, whereby the hypnotist helps the subject enter of state of relaxation and suggestibility, which essentially allows the hypnotist to bypass the conscious part of somebody's brain and speak directly to the subconscious, which is what is normally considered to be a state of hypnosis.

Through the use of a post-hypnotic trigger, yes, that is possible. In fact, a rather good example of this is Bioshock, if you know the story. If not, go and play it, it's pretty good.

Do you mean my own personal limits or the limits of hypnosis in general?

There are a lot of myths. For one thing, pendulums aren't used much anymore at all, but there are three things that I always tell people before hypnotizing them.

1. You can never become stuck in hypnosis, it's just not possible to become permanently stuck. There may be trouble drawing you out of it, but nothing is permanent.

2. Being hypnotized doesn't mean you're stupid. Some people worry that being hypnotized means their own minds are inferior to the hypnotist's, which is simply not true.

3. Whatever happens, the subject is still in control. You can't be forced to do something under hypnosis that you would definitely not do normally, such as kill another person. You also can't be hypnotized to do yourself serious harm either, becaue the subconscious is a part of the subject's psyche, and is therefore looking out for their best interests in a way, meaning the subconscious will resist any suggestion that it strongly disagrees with.

I think that answers what you can make people do as well.

In terms of what it looks like, hypnosis is misrepresented in a lot of media. There's no zombie walking or 'Yes Master', for all intents and purposes the subject will normally just look like they're asleep.

To learn the basics of hypnosis doesn't take too long, but to become good at it requires a LOT of knowledge and most importantly, experience. I have been hypnotizing people for five years now, learning all the time.

And about a quarter to a half of your mana bar, depending on the subject.

Most people are asking the questions I want answered already, so I'll go with something else, you said:

"A lot of people are stuck with the image of a bearded man swinging a pocket watch".

Do you have a beard?

Well, you can cure people of phobias, show them incredible sensations they never knew they could feel and generally improve their lives. And make them behave like chickens. You can still do that.

Generally the best way to learn is to be taught by another hypnotist. In terms of practice...I would say it all depends on the hypnotist themselves. One of the most important aspects of hypnosis is confidence. If you've done hypnosis before and feel confident that you could do it in front of a crowd of people, go right ahead!

See above. And yes, if you wanted me to.

Is it true you can only hypnotize those who are willing?
Yes it is. In order to hypnotize someone they must consent OR at the very least, not be against it. Using conversational hypnosis or instant inductions can work on people who haven't definitively made up their minds whether or not they would like to be hypnotized. Obviously the second approach can be considered a little less ethical.

I do not. Although, if I don't shave for even a few days my face gets covered in face-fur.

Can you literally command people to do or think anything through hypnosis, or is it more along the lines of "suggesting" something to them? (Or something else entirely?)

I ask because I've seen hypnotist shows on TV which suggest it is the former, but people I know have visited hypnotists in order to stop smoking, which seems to suggest the latter.

Is it true that even during the deepest stages of hypnosis, your conscience will always have the upper hand, so that the hypnotist can't make a moral person do something awful like murder?

Less of a question, more of an experience. Guess I could be used as an example from the other side.

As a person who has been hypnotized twice I can say it is great fun. Both times were for a show as our high school prom's after parties. The first time I couldn't remember a thing from it, the second time remembered because the guy told us to. The first time I was told I was cuddling up with another guy for warmth as he made us think the room was freezing. That was just one of the many things that was done in the nearly hour and half I was out. The second time the most prominent thing done to me was every time he asked how I was doing I would hand him my wallet, immediately forget that I had done so. Then get very angry looking for it. He did this about 8 times.

You wake up feeling absolutely wonderful though.

It is a normally a suggestion, but a subject under hypnosis is much more likely to obey a suggestion as if it were an order. For example if you told somebody that their hand was stuck to a table they would know it wasn't and simply pull it up. But if you suggested it to somebody under hypnosis in the right way, they would be completely unable to lift their hand. The human mind really is extraordinary!

Sometimes though, it is an order, which is commonly seen as used by stage hypnotists, because they need results fast to make people laugh and enjoy the show.

I've answered this question somewhere above but to re-iterate quickly, yes. Your subconscious will always resist and stop a suggestion that you strongly disagree with.

Two fairly common routines there. But I agree, waking from hypnosis and generally being under hypnosis is a wonderful experience, very relaxing.

I was wondering when someone would ask that :p

In answer to your question, while that is possible (it's largely dependant on the girls themselves) I personally wouldn't teach you how to do that.

But again, it would be possible, provided the girls were alright with it (or at least, not massively against it and in the habit of that sort of thing...)
