I played the original Fallout after playing Fallout 3, and I absolutely hated it. Going retro is never a good idea.
Not always true, I enjoyed fallout 2 having played 3 first.
Not that you should expect to like Fallout 1 and 2 because you liked 3, they are very different games.

Civilization 3 is obvioously a good choice for strategy on lower-end systems.

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee and Oddworld: Abe's Exodus are both fantastic, clever platformers.

The original X-COM UFO Defense is one of the greatest games of all time and cheap as dirt on Steam.

I can probably think of more, but those are requirements.
I just checked Civilization 4, is that graphically demanding? It looks a lot better than Civ 3.

Civ 4 can work on some laptops, but you have to disable most things and once it gets crowded things really slow down. Personally I find Civ 3 just as enjoyable from a tactical standpoint, and Civ 4 can sometimes get bogged down with extras that don't contribute much or are annoying to micromanage (like religion). Although if you can run Civ 4 I'd certainly go that route.

However, Civ 3 is only like $5.

So i'l be getting what is most probably a low grade laptop soon and will buy some classics that a lot of people have been saying are great like the original Fallout's, Diablo 2 and the Baldurs Gate series. I was wondering, i absolutely adored Dragon Age: Origins so will i like the Baldurs Gate series?

And what other PC games would you recommend for quite a medium - low grade laptop. I'm sorry but i don't know the specs yet, its my cousins laptop.
Baldurs gate is basically about 50 times better then dragon age. I will straight up warn you it has a extremely high learning curve. You need to understand the deeper works of how the state and combat system works or your screwed. It does have several difficulty settings to help with that though. IF you do get this I recomend looking up BGtutu its a mod that lets you play bg1 using the bg2 engine and you can get others to up the resolution. Their is also a bug where it turns the water green but their is another mod to fix that. Their is also bugs with nividia graphics cards but you can look up a quick fix in the games setting to fix that one.

Diablo 2 is dangerous in that you can easily forget that you just spent 100 hours playing that game. Its alot of fun.

dungeon keeper gold. Its alittle old but the graphics dont hinter it at all. It still holds up just fine today.

medieval/shogun total war
torchlight

all of these games are pretty much guarenteed to run on anything made in the last 10 years.
What about Medieval 2 Total War? It's Buy one get one free on PC games on a website i'm going to probably buy the PC games from.
The Total War games have to render every individual person you and the enemy is commanding, and then it has to calculate the actions of over twenty different factions, so it might cause a lot of computer strain. You should get Rome: Total War (made in 2004), or the original Medieval (made in 2000) if you like the time frame the game is set in. I tried playing Shogun: Total War, but the gameplay seemed archaic compared to every other game after it.

I personally enjoyed Dungeon Keeper 2 rather than 1, but that's just my opinion.

Fake Edit: Oh, also:

As for what games you can play, use that. I've never tried it, but people say it's pretty accurate.
This. It'll tell you your computer specifications and then compare them to the minimum and reccomended specs of video games. Works like a charm.

Real Edit: If you're going to get Medieval: Total War, then buy the expansion as well. Honestly, all you have to hear is the name: Viking Invasion.

I always get worried at downloading this sort of stuff, since the PC i'm using at the moment is a family PC and has had quite a lot of problems, which leads to me not being allowed to download much.

I'l give it a try when the laptop comes.

I would recommend Rome: Total War over Medieval 2. Lower requirements and I had more fun with it.

Icewind Dale games are okay, I guess. Play games like Baldur's Gate 2, Fallout 1/2, Planescape Torment and Jagged Alliance 2 first though.

Well, i'm going to buy all the Baldur's Gate games and old Fallout's. I was also wondering if Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2 are good? I've heard they're suppose to be bad.

These games have a lot of content. I wouldn't overload yourself too much. The NWN titles are not bad. NWN 1 was made mainly to be an online multiplayer title but it does have some good expansions and user mods if you buy the gold edition. NWN 2 is more single player title and the Mask of the Betrayer expansion is worth playing if your laptop meets the specs. I would rate both over the Icewind Dale games. Temple of Elemental Evil and Wizardry 8 are also good.

Eh, i've got nothing else to play until October and i've been really wanting to get these games recently so i might aswell get them altogether since they're cheap now.

Heh, well. You can yet at least 60 hours of gameplay from BG2 and the games are not going to get that much more expensive in a week.

I'm with anyone who says BG, Fallout, Diablo and other similar games (i.e. Planescape: Torment, Torchlight and whatnot).

And to add some recommendations I'll name a few old games I like:

Heroes of Might and Magic 1 through 3 (TBS), 3's the best but I like the other two as well.

Might and Magic 6 and 7 (RPG), I haven't played the latter, unfortunately, but it's also really good as far as I know.

Commandos 2: Men of Courage. Good RTS set in WW2. Not your typical RTS game, though.

Day of the Tentacle. Point & click adventure game, my favourite of that type. My experience is a bit limited, but it's a gem none the less. Requires DosBOX or other such thingy to play.

Majesty: The Fantasy Kingdom Sim. Basically what it says, a fantasy kingdom simulator.

Master of Orion 2 (TBS). It's in space. Pew pew with big lasers and stuff. I've also heard that the original is better, but I wouldn't know, not played it (and the second one's awesome enough for me).

Finally, I'm amazed no one mentioned the original Diablo. Play it. It's awesome.

I second Might & Magic 6 / 7. Both good.

Dungeon Siege and Warcraft 1/2.

Some of the games mentioned can be played without problem on vista 64, don't know personally about on win 7, so probably not good mentions. In fact I think M&M7 at least can be played on 64.

I've already got Warcraft 3 and can run it full graphics no problem. It's a good game.

I recommend Gangsters 1 and 2, they are both awesome and dont require good computer.

They are strategic gangstah godfather games that have entertained me for many many hours..
They have a good difficulty curve that makes every map rewarding to win..
