In my history class we had to write an essay on a historical event, my friend wrote a paper about Canadian Barbarians fighting off an army of penguins. He got an A on it too.

In my high school students had to take a computing class to be familiar with Power-Point, Word, etc. The assignment was to create a presentation in Power-Point selling your product. Everyone else chose things like shoes or pants because the project was not about the product.
Mine focused on the (fictitious) Ultra-Home-Shop-Vac-o-Matic. The only Vacuum powered by a Jet Turbine.

I have two assignments that i think could fit here (though nowhere as impressive as a few of these).
In my Humanities class we were once given an assignment that amounted to "what would an alien being think of us if their only exposure to us was via our television broadcasts". I, somewhat unintentionally, wrote the alien as reacting exactly like the doofuses from Galaxy Quest and suggesting to his superiors that they reduce Kansas to a smoldering crater (This was when I still liked Smallville) with secondary assault teams set to move in on upstate New York to deal with the X-Men.
I also did the usual "Games as Art" paper for Comp and Rhetoric. I didn't use the more obvious ones like Ico or Braid to support myself (though that might be cuz I still haven't played them). Instead my examples were Shadow of the Colossus (ok ONE obvious choice but one I had played), Mass Effect, and God of War.
A's on both papers.
(Though the girl who I got to peer review the second one would probably have flunked me. didn't get my arguments at all. The jock was much more receptive.)
