Someone calls you 'gay' as an insult, what's your response/thoughts?

"...And?"

That would be my response. Although I am not gay, the look on their face and/or silence would be enough to quell my taste for satisfaction.

I honestly doubt I'd give a toss. It seems to be increasingly rare that being called gay actually implies that you are attracted to members of the same gender, instead it's just turned into a throwaway with no paritcular malice attached.

At least, around here it is, I frequently get called it/told to stop being gay both from straight and homosexual alike and it really doesn't mean much.

Out of interest, would people get so defensive about it if they were called a girl instead? (playing devil's advocate)

Your opponent's argument automatically loses much, if not all, of its weight if they have to fall back on insinuating you are homosexual.

I would do what a gay friend of mine did last time he was in this situation.

'it helps with the constipation.'

The kid looked like he had been slapped in the face with a salmon, priceless.

My friends and I (well, my friends who really don't care) toss around the word "******" and "gay" all the time. Not just my straight friends, either.

I can only think of two of my good friends who care about how you use the word "******". I'm not sure how they feel about "gay", however.

I never get called a ****** by anyone other than my friends, so I usually reply with a witty comeback of sorts. Any other time would probably be in some dumb-ass YouTube argument, where I generally don't address any insults.

The word 'gay' has very little meaning now. I wrote a blog about it.

You'll probably have to go back, it was an early one.

Go on my way. Once they play the gay card, they're not in it for discussion anymore. They just want to have a verbal sparring match and it's best to not oblige them.

My response is normally something like "Bi, actually... but I suppose that wasn't your point..."

To be honest, I'm rather desnsitised by this point. I think most people are. The problem is, it still holds a lot of meaning to a good number of people, and so it is certainly something to be aware of. A lot of people operate under the notion that "I am (X) and it doesn't offend me so no (X) should be offended." And to be fair, it'd be a better world where nobody got offended at mere words.

However, if you've ever been roughed up for being different, you should know what it's like. It's worse when it's something more than just being fat or wearing glasses. When it comes to something where people have been routinely violated or killed, it leaves marks. Even marks on people who aren't necessarily offended by the words. I know. It's not fun being seriously hurt just because someone thought you looked "like a ******," without any corroborating evidence. People remember that, because it's not so old.

I've given up being offended. I moved on to pure mockery a long time ago, but it's not quite meaningless to everyone.

I call them homophobes, I don't play online games enough for this to be a problem, but in real life people start backfooting once you throw that out. For the record I'm heterosexual. I just believe you can call anyone out for true homophobia, sexism and racism regardless of yours or their sexuality, race or gender.

I'm not trying to make the point that 'I don't find it offensive, therefore other people shouldn't find it offensive', nor am I saying 'I'm gay and I don't find it offensive, therefore other gays shouldn't'. My point is that the actual word has lost meaning for some people; it's a word used to express dislike. I'm not supporting this idea, it's a just a comment on something I've noticed in society.

I assume all peoeple on the internet are males, unless told otherwise and I doubt any girls'll call someone gay over the internet as an insult, so my response is a simple 'fuck you'. Doesn't sound amazingly witty or anything, but I figure it makes sense if I was called gay.
