After seeing the new trailers for Hitman Absolution, I feel an itch for a new stealth game. What games have you played that you could recommend?

Edit1: I have played Blood Money and loved it, I'm not sure if I want to buy a very old game like deus ex or thief though. The graphics would be distracting.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution, especially if you get the right augments, stealth is really fun

The Splinter Cell series are always fun, although Conviction goes in a bit of a different direction.

If you don't mind low-res graphics and brutal difficulty, Yahtzee's own game: "Trilby: Art of Theft" is quite fun.

Any game from the Metal Gear Solid series. Particularly MGS3.
I can't believe it took 9 posts before someone suggested the gear

Splinter Cell Chaos Theory.

If you've already played it, reinstall it and play the bank mission again. Pure goodness

Well Angry Juju mentioned MGS4 before me. But yeah, I'm also kinda surprised nearly no one mentioned Metal Gear Solid.

It has been mentioned before, but a game that has an achievement for not killing anyone through the entire game (and you will meet LOTS of people who don't like you and happen to have firearms) should be worth checking out right? Deus Ex: Human Revolution

The MGS series are fun stealth games too.

Oblivion actually has surprisingly good stealth to me. At least one mission in the Dark Brotherhood where you move from shadow to shadow dodging guards and patrols as you try to reach a prisoner to murder was AWESOME!

In addition, stealth is pretty good in Deux Ex, although because you can't deal with enemies in stealth very well it's your only recourse so move slowly and hope you can see through walls.

And yes, Thief I and II, as well as some of the Hitman games. Keep in mind that most new stealth games suck, so try to stick with the older ones.

Oh, and Deux Ex: Human Revolution made stealth a little too easy. Just being able to become invisible isn't as fun as being fully visible and utterly undetected, like a ninja.

I quite enjoyed the stealth in Fallout 3... although maybe that's just the fun of being invisible...

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory is my favourite stealth game. It's a shame they changed so much in Conviction (not that it's a bad game, it just isn't really a Splinter Cell game). Human Revolution is another great choice, or possibly the Metal Gear Solid games?

Unfortunately there isn't really very many stealth games to choose from, they're just not as popular as other kinds of game for some reason.

Team Fortress 2 as a spy; Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. Both have you being stealthy amongst actual people, and it's so satisfying to deceive a real human being.

Thief is the way to go really, excellent stealth based games. Try the originals but if graphics are a big deal then Deadly Shadows while suffering from much smaller levels still has great stealth mechanics.

Also Metal Gear Solid 3 had great stealth and is one of the few games I've heard of that manages to do stealth boss fights. Try and get the Subsistence version if you can.

Metal Gear Solid 3 is good for newcomers to the series, Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay is a fun little fling If you feel like listening to Vin Diesel gargle one liners for a few hours while sneaking it up too.
Thief, Arkham Asylum, err, uhh, can't think of more.
