I can't give you any pros, for I despise Macbooks in all forms. I can show you this though!

They are awesome machines. I use the unix environment for web development, but I am just a poser!

They don't feel as empty or as flimsy as laptops, plus the screen is just awesome.

It's unfortunate that your educational establishment is whoring itself out, they probably have a deal with apple.

It might be twice the price for lower spec but it will still boot faster and load programs faster than any windows device.

I do find my mac simpler to use than most windows machines I've worked on, but that might be my lack of experience with windows. Once you figure out some of the (I'm loathe to say this) "Pro" features, macs are pretty handy to use.
This may take a while to learn since I grew up on windows, but I guess I'll give it a go.

[small] We better get damn good free software on this thing...[/small]

Speed is not really much of an issue for me. I am using my dad's computer at the moment, and it boots in less then 20 seconds. Any less then that starts to feel redundent, especially since it takes less then a secobnd to open anything.

[small]Something positive about the mac... Yay...[/small]

This is why we have so many "I linke this girl but don't know what to do threads on here"
Macs are style items that are at the same time highly functional. Period.
Yes you can get better value elsewhere. But no-one but a bunch of nerds is going to be impressed by your' home built zomg uber machine with i7 processor and 12 gigs of ram. No-one is going to be impressed that you built a PC with the same specs a Mac for half the price. Particularly not girls. I might be impressed by your' uber machines, the people on this site might be impressed but most people wont.

People need to start realizing that in todays world computers are about more than what's on the inside. They have become more like clothing. Sure you can buy a cashmere sweater anywhere for maybe 100 bucks or less. Just don't expect to look better or to be more impressive than the guy show spent 600 bucks on a designer one. they both have teh same function, heck the cheaper one may even be more practical since it's machine washable. But no-one but you cares.

All the mac hate always makes me realize what a lack of understanding there is amongst the "gaming community" of the real world.

This doesn't really help when it's only a 2 year deal that I have to use it for school and give it back in two years. And I am a bit hessitent about the "what's on the inside" argument, since I have never heard that before in my life. Even from people I know who have macs.

That's a bit uncalled for. Care to explain exactly what we don't understand about the "real world"? I'm a big fan of building stuff myself. I built my own computer and I've pretty much rebuilt my entire car. Are some people impressed by this? You bet. Are all people impressed by this? Probably not. Do I care? Not in the slightest.

Something doesn't have to be relevant to absolutely everyone's interests for it to be important in the so-called "real world". Being able to build your own stuff is a skill. Skills are important. Buying a consumer product for a lot more then it's worth to impress your friends or girls is called being a shallow prick.

He didn't say the skills weren't important, but most people today care about style over substance; the number of shitty built computers sold is phenomenal, macs are seen as style icon that is also reliable.

Pretty much what I was saying.

Although just to further clarify. I have nothing against people with whoi do this, heck I admire it. What I'm getting at is that in todays world perception is everything. When a person pulls otu their computer many people conclude several things about that person. Let's take the Macbook Air since its the clearest example in my mind:

Many people will assume that someone using such a computer is: Wealthy, tech savy, stylish, profeesional that require protable power.
None of this may be true, it most probably isn't in most cases. (It isn't in my case)
But that doesn't matter the impression is made, that person will mmost likely change their method of interaction with you based on simply on what computer you are using.

It's the same thing that studies have proven that those dressed in the trendiest sharpest clothes have a leg up at the start of an interview compared to the more normally dressed. It has nothig to do with substance.

You may think I am shallow git that I pay extra to impress other people but that's the way the world works today. The world is shallow. Get on board or get left behind.

I myself was pretty much forced to rent a macbook pro from school (There was this other HP laptop I could choose - which I actually considered for some time but I'm not a big fan of HP laptops either) and I am VERY glad I ended up on the mac. Sure, it might be slightly more expensive, but I dont regret getting for ONE second. It's hard to put your finger on exactly why, or what it is that makes it awesome, but I know for sure that when this computer goes out of date I'll be getting another macbook, and not a windows laptop. That said, I dont have any intentions of playing games on my macbook, as I consider it my work computer. (If you want to play games you should really get a desktop computer).

TL;DR: It's hard to say exactly WHY, but after getting used to my macbook, using a windows laptop feels like going back 10 years technology wise.

*Please dont hate me*

PS: Before I got my macbook I was hated apple aswell!

Wait.. This isnt a mac bashing thread? Damnit.

Well, to tell you the truth a mac isnt that bad if you don't consider the price.
You can always install bootcamp on it and you have a very expensive windows computer.

so in your real world showing off your pc is a good thing? I'm sorry if the opinion of the person who has to deal with it 99% of the time (the owner) is more important than somebody who may never see the damn thing. Its all well and good bumming pretty things yourself but don't force your ideas on the rest of us, we don't buy computers to impress people.
The guy asked for a valid reason to own a Mac. I think I gave him one. How am I forcing things on you? I am presenting my opinion. When 20 people post "Mac sux cos its overpriced shit for style noobz" no-one complains.
If you read my second post I elaborated on the importance of making impressions in todays world. Some people are willing to spend and extra couple of hundred to make a particular impression. Why are people here so against this? Why is this seen as a catastrophic waste of money? We live in a superficial society where how you look and others percieve you may very well be the deciding factor in how other people initially interact with you.
It has nothing to do with showing off. It has everything to do with presentation.

I have a macbook with windows 7 on it. The hardware is sound enough to play lots of games, but swap the OS.

Yep.....I'm a pretty shit salesman.
Well, you basically summed up the arguments the Apple people bring up themselves.

I honestly can't imagine any reason to pay for a modern Mac. They used to be really good for certain tasks, and people seem to think they still are, while Windows or Linux systems can do the same things Macs can do, even better of you buy a "normal" PC at the price of a Mac. This is true for notebooks and desktop systems. Desktop PCs show an even greater difference in performance, since Apple often uses notebook components so the chassis can stay as small as the design dictates.
Granted, in Windows or Linux, the OS doesn't look quite as shiny (although Win7 is beautiful in a way too, while still focusing a lot more on productivity than MacOS, and there are a ot of really beautiful Linux interfaces).

I have nothing against Macs (I don't really care about computers to be quite honest with you) but I fail to see why the school is making you rent a macbook. What school work needs to be done that requires a Mac? I always thought that as long as the work is done to an acceptible standard does it really matter whether it is done on the Mac or the PC?
