Now please, I'm begging you people as the author of this horrid thing, can we let this die?
You could euthanise it. All it would take is a massive quote stack and...some owl pictures.

Desperate times...

Well, we might as well get started.
Mmm, I love me some necromancy in the afternoon.

Would euthanasing this article involve potential bannings?
Perhaps, but that is a risk I'm willing to take!
It needs to die.

Let us put an end to this monstrosity once and for all!

The Halo trilogy is one of those good cases in video games where "Ignorance is bliss" parfectly fits.
The ignorance here being about consoler gamers getting something new in their living room, while PC people just had a "well, and?".

The systems were well done, smooth, but nothing terribly original or varied enough.

The truly best elements of these games are the main themes.

Nope. HALO is at best a Half-Life mod. Difference is that Consoles haven't had the slew of good FPS's that the PC started off with.
If you have a Half-Life mod that allows three-way fights, please let me know. I'm dying to try that.

One of Halo's big "stand outs" for me was that the AI wasn't just "ally" or "target"; not only did different character models have different behaviours, but also different factions of AIs would actually fight each other. One of the great joys (for me) in all 3 Halos is manipulating the different factions into fighting each other. Glorious, glorious Covenant vs. Flood vs. Me fights, where I can use my gunfire to sculpt the battle into the form I desire, are for me the apex of shooter gaming. After that, the rest started to feel like prettier versions of Duck Hunt.

Indeed, my biggest disappointment in Halo 3 was that there were so few opportunities to rig those big three-way fights.

Exactly! This was one of my favorite aspects about halo 1, the ability to determine the outcome of a battle via wellplaced sniper shots like near the end of Two Betrayals. That gave the game some extra replay ability.

Why it's popular.

Because It's accessible,
Because it's fairly fun,
Because it's extremely well marketed.

Why it's hated.

Because it's popular.

I'm tired of the completely asinine assumption that, as Arbre put it, "ignorance is bliss". I'm a console gamer AND a PC gamer (yes, you can be both. I know that may shock some of you) and I know a good game when I play it. Trust me, good games, like crappy ones, are not limited to either PCs or consoles.
Thumbs up sir! I'm sick of the perception among some grizzled gamers that 'everything is better on PC' or that a RPG isn't 1337 enough if you don't have to memorize a gajillion key configurations and have an inventory screen that spans two monitors.
Anyway I'm getting side-tracked; a good game is a good game. I can quite happily enjoy Half-Life and Halo (which are two different games) without feeling the need to ritually disembowel myself for being disloyal to either and I pity the fool who deprives themself of a gaming experience because it's seen as "popular" or "shallow". I thought games were supposed to be about fun?

I agree with both of you. I see far too many big titles like Halo get written off just because they are popular. Its like these self righteous jerks think they are being cool or making some sort of point. Im not saying everyone has to like Halo, its just sad that some people right off such good games for reasons like that. I also agree Im tired of being judged by the PC crowd about what games I like. When you think about it, the PC crowd doesn't have much grounds since the console market has really taken over in the last few years. Thats probably because we are all ignorant console gamers though. rolls eyes.

Nah. Is it as superbly violent as the new Rambo film? Because I loved that film. That's the problem with quirky kids films: not enough throats being ripped out or people being shot in half...

Halo is popular for two big reasons.

The first is because it was a well-designed FPS game for consoles. That was an astonishingly rare breed at the time. Never mind the game features: just having a decent FPS on a console is rare enough.

The second was the multiplayer. FPS games all beg for multiplayer action, it gives a game replayability. XBL further refined this aspect of play.

These are both strong components for any game. But when you combine them, in an environment with no real console-based competition, you got an experience on the console that was unique.

So unique that even when other console games come out supporting a similar feature set, Halo can count on name recognition to retain its popularity.

There are other games far more deserving of our attention than any of the Halo's. Could we please discuss those instead?

I think I figured out what to compare this thread to.

Jason Voorhees.

Think about it, they both never die, they both get uglier as time goes on, they both move slowly, and the only time that they can harm somebody is if the victim is either unaware or very slow and stupid. Oh, and they both worship their mothers severed head.

As far as Rambo goes, I have yet to see the new one. Waiting for it to come out on DVD and all that. Maybe by then I'll have enough money for it.

What I'm trying to say is this. It's one of the best FPS games out there right now. The Halo Trilogy isn't going to lead us all to the promised land, but can we all just stop saying it's a piece of shit without at least trying it first?
Yeah I played all three. Beat all three. Didn't feel a whole lot for any of them. Oh! But I did despise Halo 3 with 50% of my soul and 75% of my being. I spoiled my Xbox360 buying experience by purchasing that first. I should make a note to kill my friend Josh for talking me into it. Anyways, not worth $60. If the Orange Box can be 60$ and have ALL THAT on it, Halo 3 should have been like, 20 bucks. And unless it magically turns into the best game ever when you play on multiplayer, it isn't worth the trouble.

Although I guess it's Microsoft's fault for making Halo 3 suck so damn much. Game-killer, I name thee hype. Too much endorsement for the damn thing. There was a f@$king FERRIS WHEEL for Christ's sake! And a drink! WE DON'T NEED A DRINK DAMMIT! I'll admit, it was tasty, but this changes nothing! Should have just had the damn commercials with all the little figures and that would have been it. Even then it was a bit overdone. God knows how many hours went into that thing for what? 45 seconds of commercial time? Oh and it's Bungie's fault too for letting them advertise it so damn much.

That all is a matter of opinion. Seeing as its the topic of the thread, Halo fans should be able to sound off every bit as non fans. It's not like we are living in Russia or something. Let freedom ring! My spin? Personally, I really enjoy Halo and think it deserves the attention it gets, no matter how that sits with others. It's not like that hurts anyone, and everyone should be able to give their opinions without risking a childish flame war. Simple as that.

I did not hate Halo and still do not. I just hate Halo fans that are ignorant console-tards. I think people should enjoy games. My brother and I bought Halo1 when we bought our Xbox (original 50gig model). We were told how awesome it was. My brother played it all the way through I made if half way before getting bored. It's called Halo Combat Evolution, that's what it is, nothing new. Just an evolution for a console. Being a PC gamer I was not impressed.

What started to make me hate Halo fans was how ignorant they were when praising Halo in the streets. I stated to enjoy telling them about PC FPSs just to see them get pissed off. The final straw for me was hearing non-stop from classmates about networking Xboxs together. And then getting more funny looks when I'd say, "and?" As for Halo3, I like reminding people that it isn't actually real HD just because I'm tired of the ignorant users not knowing/seeing the quality you can get on a PC. Meaning I do it to shut them up.
