Oh, if you're an officer downtown...I have some parking tickets. I always feel bad for the officers around Market Sreet on the weekend nights. They look sooooo annoyed.
Annoyed, you say? Sounds like you have probably seen me, then.

Sorry, can't help with your tickets, that's a separate department. :)

Unless you live in a ridiculously small and homogenous country, it's likely that everyone reading this knows of areas that are greatly, even radically different from one another. America is pretty much the same. It's just that the loudmouths and idiots get the most press time because that's where the ratings are. A show or news story about "average Americans who just do their thing" isn't going to get the viewers.

Anyway, OP, good to see you enjoyed your time here in upstate NY. (And a pity you didn't get to see the snow that we usually get- some lovely areas up here, especially blanketed in white.) If international travel were cheaper and easier we'd probably have more moments of revelation like this across the board.

Myself, I've never been out of the country, but I have traveled from Ohio to Alabama, and I've seen the good and bad of both. Though I find it a good thing that this country (and the world) has so many differences- variety is the spice of life.

So I spent my Christmas and New Year away from home (to the tune of a few thousand miles) over with friends in New York State, America.
Actually, all of the stereotypes you mentioned are true, but you're in the wrong part of the US to see them. If you take the kind of people you met in New York State and contrast them with those stereotypes you get a pretty clear picture of how maddening the politics in this country really are.

If it were up to me, you'd see the entire country representing the kinds of values you observed during your visit. The frightening thing, to me at least, is that those values are actually becoming a minority. The fact that the people you met dislike what our leaders are doing is evidence of this, the majority however supported our involvement in the middle east.
