My hubbys cousin have 5 kids (age 6-16).

They are like a tornado on the computers... clicking every single ad, lik and image they find.
So far they have killed one machine and god knows how long it will take before they kill another.

The oldest kid recently got his own machine (god forbid), and struggles somewhat with the understanding of the machine (fair enough).
At least he's not installing everything and it's mom from the internet anymore.

Completely unimportant, but in my mind, grandmother and nana are the same thing, what does it mean to you?
They mean the same thing to me too, but my mother's mother wanted her grandchildren to call her Nanna just because she prefers it. As a result, we were conditioned to call her Nanna. My grandmother didn't really care.
Ah, well, for future reference, including terms that have meaning based solely on your personal life in posts to random strangers on the internet might not be the best way to go :)

Maybe not, but like I said that's what I am conditioned to call her so it kinda just slipped out :D

Well my mom is an IT techie so I don't really get much trouble from her besides the odd "The computer's not starting up!".

My maid, however, kept downloading all sorts of crap onto her computer, gets tons of viruses and comes to me to fix it, even after I tell her again and again now to download random things.

My dad isn't too bad, except he keeps visiting some porn sites, gets a virus and blames ME because obviously Call of Duty and Mass Effect is a trojan in disguise. He also believes Norton to be the best antivirus software there is, even after I made him watch a norton scan which went something like this:

*Scanning file: Trojan... clean*
*Scanning file: Spyware... clean*
*scan complete*
*Viruses: 0!!!*

My sister is surprisingly bad at using computers, even though she practically lives on the internet. Once she asked me before I went out if she could use my old computer. I said yes, but only if it's for a short while because it was prone to overheating. When I come back, guess what? She left the computer on, it overheated and there was a burning smell coming from the computer case.

And I get blamed for breaking the computer.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGGG

My father is a website designer and has been for decades but he insists on typing using only the index finger on his right hand. He even tries to defend his habit by calling it a "precision typewriting technique". I guess that's just the way she goes...

No good stories from my family - my parents are both IT teachers. But i regularly have a good laugh at some new scam or another. And moments later a feeling of utter dread overcomes me, because i know there are countless people who fall for them.

Ugh, the same thing happens to me. Although its more along the lines of my Dad claiming to know how shit works so he can justify blaming me for faults that have got to do with nothing about me.

"the way she goes" is like saying that's the way the cookie crumbles or something to that effect.

On the whole my parents are computer literate to a startling degree. They attend courses at the university (they work there so have to be computer literate) are comptent at setting up routers, modems, wireless internet, they can touch type and I can't, and all in all the only things I have to help them deal with are when we get overloaded on viruses (usually because my sister went on something she shouldn't have). So yeah, everyone in my family is computer literate.

They just can't use the television.

Is it so difficult to understand that if you want to watch the freeview box you have to unplug the SCART from the DVD and plug in the one from the freeview box? I have told them this hundreds of times for several years, but still if I watch a DVD and forget to switch it back over, it's 'Come put the TV right.' And if they want to watch a DVD but the freeview's on 'Come put a DVD on.'

Seriously this is tech we've had for over a decade, and they've never learned to use it right.

My dad has been working with computers since they took up a whole room, so I was pretty much raised on them. With that said, I don't understand how my mom can barely check her e-mail, and my brothers often can't figure out how to "turn on the internet."

My dad is currently the director of network services at a university, and I work in the laptop service center at the same place. You wouldn't believe some of the PEBKAC problems we get here. It's an arts school, so a lot of the people we service are 'ar-teests" who don't have to treat us with any kind of respect. I have a lovely little collection of RAM I've removed from the computers of individuals who treated me like a lesser life form because I'm either A) working in a service industry or B) a girl.
Hehe, we should compare sizes. I mean collection sizes, sheesh :p.

Yeah, I did that to every one of my step-dad's PCs, he always blamed me for everything, even tho I was the one fixing it all the damn time. But hey, why pay for RAM upgrades when you can have them for free?

Usually, people in "art" schools are pompous and stupid little shits that consider any form of random paint brush wiggling art.

My ex's "best friend" was in one of them (the only specimen I allowed to approach me at less than 100meters, since she was living with my ex) and her teachers wanted the kids to make some kind of retarded painting with their own or some animal's blood. So yes, you go in an idiot, and you get out completely brain raped.
Needless to say, she did it with her own stupid blood and past out for draining too much blood ...

But she was pretty damn pompous, looked at me as if I was a second hand citizen, and guess what for? Absolutely nothing, I don't think she even knew my name.

To stay on topic tho, I truly feel sorry for the guys working at tech support and such. I know I wouldn't be able to take it, since I'm extremely intolerant of stupidity.
The only stupidity I put up with is my family's. I recently reinstalled Windows on my mom's PC, put 7 in, cuz, y'know, it's 7, and guess what? She managed to download some crap, that, from what I can tell, damaged her graphics card's BIOS, now the only thing that can boot is Win7, not even the oldest and lamest version of Linux I could find, and that, without installing the ATI drivers, cuz once I do, it just ruins everything. And just 2 days before the incident, I told her not to download ANYTHING without asking ME first, but noooo.
BTW, the PC's a laptop.

Anyways, been thru most of what you guys said, and I think the problem is stupidity, as always, people don't even TRY to understand how PCs work or what they're doing on them on a daily basis.

Since it's 4chan, I don't take it entirely at face value, but it's not unbelievable. And it's incredibly funny. "Deleted the internet" is my new favourite phrase.
Reminds me of the IT Crowd.

OP: Thankfully, my parents are just as tech savvy as I am. My dad started working with computers back in the late 70's, so he's a long termer.
Beat me to it :(

if they dont see the diference on the ram change the cpu too :p get theirs put an older version and give them back the pc ^^ good fun you will have
Nah, most of these pricks usually have laptops or Macs (I'm anti-Mac, and anything Apple for that matter, just because they dare sell obsolete tech at premium prices, I mean, seriously, 2000 bucks for a laptop that's technically inferior to my 700bucks, 4 year old piece of junk?)

My dad's not too bad, although he always asks my uncle for help when something goes wrong, and inevitably my uncle gives the exact same replies that I do (he works in IT, btw, I just use the PC with no further qualifications) and then HE'S the genius and all I get is an absent-minded pat on the head... :/

The worst thing I did however was introduce my Mum to youtube. She never gets off it. Stole my computer, and my LOUD speakers, and plays the worst music, then wonders why we used to hit our limit and she couldn't play her music anymore....

This or Tony Pantano with the constant comments "What a sexy man!"

And if ever AVG catches a virus she says "Don't download anything!" I can't get her to understand that EVERY SITE WILL BE DOWNLOADING SOMETHING TO YOU just for LOOKING at it! /sigh

My parents are both very computer literate. They might not understand some of the more technical things but they will pick it up fast. My mum's job involves doing a lot of work with the IT department at her work so she gets to learn all about new document management system builds and upgrades to the server. She came home today and told me all about how they are putting in new solid state drives for things that need to be accessed faster and how the computer guys are planning on putting some RAID 6 arrays in. She didn't quite get the whole idea of it but after 20 sec of explaining she said "oh that makes sense". I got lots of stories when they switched over to a 64bit system.

Ugh....
If anything goes wrong with a computer in my house, no matter whether I wasn't home all day, if it belongs to someone else and it's been in their room forever, or if someone's even been on the entire time, it's my fault. My dad then does this thing where he expects me to fix it, but doesn't want me doing anything. It pisses me off.

My father works with computers. He does wireless networking. He has an extremely detailed understanding of internet and network protocols, as well as Unix programming. He did some raw binary programming when he was younger. I go to him when I have problems, not the other way around.

Yet he has trouble navigating Explorer (he once made most of my C drive 'hidden' while trying to find My Documents), and types with two fingers.

On that note - my schools actually did try to teach touchtyping. I failed at it, quite badly. Then some years later, I got addicted to the internet and picked up touchtyping in about twelve months without thinking about it.
