I know the Escapist has mass love for music, so I was hoping to use some of you're guy's knowledge to my benefit.

Anyway, those who know me know that I am not a musical man. In fact, I barely listen to it other than when I'm in the car. I have no favorite song, artist, album, or whatever. Music to me is meh.

Still, I'm trying to find some music that is similar to something I wrote. Something you could hear in the background while reading it.

The story is about a "popular" boy whom gets depressed and ends up turning to drugs. Eventually the boy begins to feel hatred for those he felt where friends and begins to sulk as a loner. At the end the boy pleads to his friends to listen to him, but they reject him because of his addiction. The boy then kills himself, and the story ends.

The saying ?never judge a book by its cover? has been so hardly beaten into public consciousness that it has become a motto for schools, understanding, and children?s cartoons for years. Most people relate the saying to a seemingly weird nerd that becomes really cool when you actually talk to him, or the misunderstood loner that smells funny but is actually a nice guy. The reality is that you should not judge anybody by what you see. Humans are complex beings with lots of emotions, and the only true way to understand them is to sit down and listen.
Chet seemed like a great kid. From an outsiders view at least. He was decent in school, had good looks, girls liked him, and he hung out with a popular group of kids. He wasn?t the most envied guy in school, but a day didn?t pass without some lonely guy wishing to be a little bit more like him.
Still, Chet felt like part of him was missing. An empty feeling that didn?t go away. He was tiered of that fake personality he put on at school to remain popular, the friends that he felt didn?t bother to know him, his everyday boring routine. As Junior year progressed, Chet feelings became worse; His constant boredom, his untrustworthy friends, and that stressful ACT. Soon enough Chet?s emotions affected his behavior. He started staying in on weekends, ignoring people he had once called friends. He missed a full week of practice, and in return was kicked off the team.
To his friends and classmates, Chet hadn?t really changed. A fake personality fallowed him to school every day and covered his true emotions. One night, Chet?s friends forced him to a party. There, Chet found a new outlet for his painful emotions. Some guy had brought drugs and Alcohol to the party. Soon enough, Chet?s friends caught on to his new found addiction, and when they called him out, Chet completely rejected them.
As Chet?s social life decreased, he became more and more hateful. He now hated the friends he believed had betrayed him, the girls who he thought mocked him, and the teachers who graded him unfairly. One day Chet was walking through the park as the sunset, the city turning to night. He saw his old best friends there. Joe and Mark, sitting on a bench chilling. When he approached them, they showed him no love. He fell to his knees and cried in front of them, begging them to listen. They just got up and left, he was pretty sure he had heard one of them call him a ?scumbag?.
The next day, the police found Chet?s body in the park. He overdosed in a suicide attempt. As the word spread around school, girls and guys alike cried for their seemingly perfect friend. Joe and Mark were dumbfounded.
Some times, the best thing you can do for someone is to just listen to them?

Anyway, can anyone provide me with a song that could be played in the background of this sad story.

Limit on swearing and explicit content. Try to pick a song conservative enough to be considered kind of school appropriate.

That's basically 90% of all Alice In Chains music. Give me a minute, let me find a good song.

EDIT: Here's a good one. "Would?"
The mood, the lyrics, everything about this song fits.

EDIT 2: Led Zeppelin - No Quarter works beautifully as well.

I have no idea...maybe "defy You" by the Offspring, but that isn't very fitting for a suicide... or Possibly Scratched out by The Matches...idk

Its a hard one to fit exactly but maybe something like
"When Love and Death Embrace" by HIM
or something by Alkaline Trio like "Sadie" or "Prevent This Tragedy"?

You sound like you want some Elliott Smith. Weird folk rock dude who killed himself a couple of years ago. Writes very haunting music.

All of it is good, so just look around at his stuff.

I'll start you off with this

Maybe "Father's Son" by 3 Doors Down.

Doesn't follow the themes of the short story, but it could work.

I'll read the story while listening to the song and get back to you (probably tomorrow now; it's 23:05 where I live).

Angels Fall First by Nightwish

A calm song played with acoustic guitar and instrumentals, with some flute and violins (and/or cello. Not sure).

The Lyrics are as follows:

"An angelface smiles to me
Under a headline of tragedyThat smile used to give me warmth
Farewell - no words to say
beside the cross on your grave
and those forever burning candles

Needed elsewhere
to remind us of the shortness of our time
Tears laid for them
Tears of love, tears of fear
Bury my dreams, dig up my sorrows
Oh, Lord why
the angels fall first

Not relieved by thoughts of Shangri-La
Nor enlightened by the lessons of Christ
I'll never understand the meaning of the right
Ignorance lead me into the light

(Repeat chorus)

Sing me a song
of your beauty
of your kingdom
Let the melodies of your harps
caress those whom we still need

Yesterday we shook hands
My friend
Today a moonbeam lightens my path
My guardian"

EDIT: Or alternative, the Dead Boy's Poem, by the same band.

Born from silence, silence full of it
A perfect concert my best friend
So much to live for, so much to die for
If only my heart had a home

Sing what you can't say
Forget what you can't play
Hasten to drown into beautiful eyes
Walk within my poetry, this dying music
- My loveletter to nobody

Never sigh for better world
It's already composed, played and told
Every thought the music I write
Everything a wish for the night

Wrote for the eclipse, wrote for the virgin
Died for the beauty the one in the garden
Created a kingdom, reached for the wisdom
Failed in becoming a god

Never sigh for better world
It's already composed, played and told
Every thought the music I write
Everything a wish for the night

"If you read this line, remember not the hand that wrote it
Remember only the verse, songmaker's cry the one without tears
For I've given this its strength and it has become my only strength.
Comforting home, mother's lap, chance for immortality
Where being wanted became a thrill I never knew
The sweet piano writing down my life"

"Teach me passion for I fear it's gone
Show me love, hold the lorn
So much more I wanted to give to the ones who love me
I'm sorry
Time will tell [this bitter farewell]
I live no more to shame nor me nor you

And you... I wish I didn't feel for you anymore..."

A lonely soul... An ocean soul...
